Boehner: 'We're going to have a big win'


COLUMBUS, Ohio -- House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) seemed to show relaxed optimism this morning as he met with voters here. His prediction for Tuesday night: “I think we’re going to have a big win.”

Boehner, the potential next Speaker of the House, and congressional candidate Steve Stivers shook hands with people at a restaurant down the street from the Ohio State University and dropped by a call center in Ohio’s 15th District. This district is the scene of a rematch between Stivers, a businessman, and incumbent Rep. Mary Jo Kilroy (D). Kilroy won her race in 2008 by the narrowest of margins and underperformed President Obama by more than any Democrat in the country. NBC rates the race Lean Republican.

Talking with a patron about working non-stop for nine months, Boehner joked, “I’ll have a baby Tuesday night…a big one.” (Rep. John Boccieri, a Democrat from Ohio, had to leave a rally with Bill Clinton yesterday because Boccieri's wife went into labor.)

Boehner told another woman, when asked if he was looking forward to this “next wave in Congress, “I sure am.” The group around him laughed.

He didn’t answer questions about the president’s visit to Ohio today or the thwarted possible attempted terrorist attack from Friday.

In 1995, Boehner handed out campaign checks from the tobacco industry to members on the House floor at a time when lawmakers were considering eliminating a tobacco subsidy.
The top donor to Boehner's leadership PAC in 2003-2004 was SLM Corp., the Reston, Virginia-based student-loan company better known as Sallie Mae. SLM contributed $65,170 to Boehner's Freedom Project, more than twice as much as the second-biggest donor, New York-based Goldman Sachs Group Inc. The money came as the House Education and Workforce Committee, which Boehner chairs, prepared to write new legislation governing student loans.
DeLay's Jan. 7 decision to permanently relinquish his leadership post came after former aides were mentioned in a plea-bargain agreement with Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff. House Republicans, who will hold a new vote the week of Jan. 30, have pledged to address ethics issues, including a possible overhaul of lobbying rules.
Blunt, who was tapped by then-House Republican Whip DeLay in 1999 to be his chief deputy, has been acting majority leader since Texan DeLay stepped down after being indicted in September on unrelated money-laundering charges in Austin.
Both men's political action committees employ Jim Ellis, who was indicted along with DeLay. DeLay's PAC gave Blunt's committee a $150,000 donation in 2000, and Blunt's PAC gave $10,000 to DeLay's non-profit foundation that same year. Both lawmakers' PACs have employed Alexander Strategy Group, a Georgetown-based firm whose partners include former Abramoff and DeLay associates.

    I want to see a balance of power but I want them to be able to work together for our country. Is that too much to ask for? I am an indep but will be voting Democrate this time around. The thought of nothing being able to get done with the GOP controlling either the Senate or House, is heartbreaking. I see people on different sites on craigslist ask for food. Come on, this is America.

    You see people ask for food, which is a horrible thing, but how is that the party that's not in power fault? Democrats controlled the House and Senate for close to 4 years and Obama had 2. How I see it, we continue down this path it's going to get much worse.

    Do me a favor, when you get your first paycheck in January let me know how you feel towards the party that's in power now.

        Relax, a Washington Post has a different take--the latest Washington Post/ABC News poll showing likely voters favoring the Republican candidate in their Congressional district over the Democrat by a four point margin (49% to 45%).

        What the Washington Post readers may miss, however, is the subtext of two important words in the headlines: "edge" and "slight."

        A four-point Republican margin on what is known among pollsters as the "generic" House ballot, is closer than what most other recent national polls have been showing (at least as of this writing), particularly those from Gallup, Rasmussen Reports, Fox News and others showing outsized Republican leads. Another new CNN poll released just this morning shows Republicans leading by seven (52% to 45%). Of course, the Post/ABC poll is just one estimate with a margin of error -- random change alone might have produced a wider or narrower Republican lead had they conducted multiple polls using the same methods.

        I would really laugh if even if the Republicans do win, that they decide they want another person for the Majority Leader instead of Boehner. He's already talking like he is the one. Maybe they have other ideas, because, he's been in the Congress for a long time, and that is what the TP are fighting about. I wouldn't count my chickens before they hatch Boehner. I don't think they like you anymore than anyone else in Congress, for one thing you're a loud mouth. Hell No Boehner.

          I welcome the new do-nothing congress. We've tried to starve the beast that is government of its funding, expecting politicians to follow it up with cuts to pay for the tax cuts. They did not cut anything and deficits ballooned.

          My guess is the Republicans are going to doubledown on starve the beast fiscal policy again, talk a big game on cutting spending and not actually cut much of anything, since they will lose a lot of voters if they cut any of the popular programs (Public education, SS, Medicaid, Medicare, Defense, etc.) , and deficits will continue to get worse.

          Im starting to think we would be better off if we had 50 independent nations instead of one United States of America, since half the country wants to rob the treasury dry of its funding.

He has to be one of the dumbest people in government today. He fought student loan reform as the politician who took the most amount of money from the Banks that made student loans. Obama's administration has already passed credit card reform, healthcare reform, equal pay for women, and many other accomplishments. He has created more jobs in his first 8 months than the whole 8 years of the Bush administration. This is a fact. He has also lowered taxes for most Americans except the top 2 percent, main stream media will not tell you about that little tidbit!

                        The reason we Americans have such a high-tax burden is because for years and years, due to tax loopholes, and tax breaks, the wealthy and big business Corporations have had to pay very little or no taxes at all, so average, everyday Americans have to shoudler the tax burden. Is this fair? Let's be clear, Loopholes are just another way to lie, cheat and steal and basically, get over on the American people.

                        And, why on earth would minority leader Bohener, would stand side-by-side over the weekend with a Nazi sympathizer and dignify that era is beyond belief?
