We won't know if any of this means a thing until late Nov 2. What happens if on election day, indies and others thinking of voting republican, walk into the booth, remember the 8 years of Bush and the GOP and change their minds? Wishful thinking, who knows but in this year of weird primaries, I wouldn't place a bet against or for any outcome.

If you haven't been watching the news, MSNBC has been covering most of the day, possible terrorist bombs shipped as cargo and on one passenger plane. Gibbs is giving a press conference now.

One has to wonder about the timing of these 'bomb' shipments. Possibly terrorists trying to affect the outcome of the election? I wouldn't rule it out.

Spanky-

I think more fiscal restraint is a foregone conclussion at this point. I know conservatives have been using the growing debt as an election year talking point, as they do every election. But everyone knows (Krugman included) that during a deep and punishing recession is not the time for government cut backs- quite the opposite. Republicans won't admit it, but they wouldn't have done much differently had they been in the driver's seat. They have the luxury of not being the ones responsible for having made those decisions this election cycle, and are capitalizing on that to pick up seats. As I have mentioned on this site before, when the proverbial poop hit the fan back in the waning hours of Bush's presidency, everyone in Congress supported the bank bailouts because they knew the alternative was a complete economic collapse. Now that the economy is somewhat stable, the economic lifelines the government has been employing to keep things from getting worse will slowly be removed, tax revenues will slowly increase and the budget deficits will slowly start to shrink.

Steve. The facts speak for themselves, the debt was increased: Carter, 42%; Reagan, 189%; Bush 41, 55%; Clinton, 39%; Bush 43, 89%. Has Pres Obama added to the debt, yes, because of the economic collapse. Obama inherited a $1.3 trillion dollar budget deficit from Bush and that was before the collapse. But the above numbers are facts, they do not lie; under GOP presidents, 333% was added to the debt; under democratic presidents, 81%. You may wish to believe that the debt grew the most under democratic presidents but the facts prove otherwise. Was some of the spending necessary under Reagan, Bush and Bush--yes, in an effort to "stimulate" the economy during recessions. Why then do republicans insist that Pres Obama should not do the same. You want to blame someone for the mess--point at the ones who did the most damage in the past because the past is how today came to be.

Steve- The debt load of this country can't be laid at the feet of one party. To claim otherwise is either a) an indication of naivety, or b) an attempt to mislead your readers.

The President of the United States submits the Federal Budget to Congress every year, after which Congress must pass a budget resolution through both the Senate and House. So both the executive and legislative branches of government are involved in the budget process.

THE SEPARATION OF POWERS ACTS ENSURES THAT THE CONGRESS IS THE ONLY BODY THAT HAS THE POWER TO PASS BUDGETS AND LAWS.. sorry that you dont understand that.

Jody, I have to give it to you, you are nothing if not consistent. But what difference does it make who ran up the debt? The amount of debt is a fact that exists and cannot be spun away with political double talk or accusation.

But if it makes you feel good, and clearly it does, I'll just stipulate that it's 100% the repulicans' fault. Now what? It's there and something must be done.

And all you MSNBC'ers can quit with the "everyone knows that a recession is not the time for a cutback" crap. I assure you that everyone knows no such thing.

So Jody, you got $42k laying around? You prepared for that number to double or triple? Do you really think that is wise? Your degree in economics is from what university?

The press can try to categorize it any way they want, but the bottom line is: health care reform (entitlement), trillion dollar deficits as far as the eye can see and an arrogance by both Congress and our President to any form of compromise. They are fulfilling their agenda, not that of the American people.

Jody, Iowa "Obama inherited a $1.3 trillion dollar budget deficit from Bush and that was before the collapse"

I guess you think that if you repeat a lie often enough, people will believe it. Here are the facts;

Bush proposed a 2009 Budget calling for a nominal increase in spending and a $405 Billion Deficit. The Democratic Congress refused to vote on Bush's Budget, and used continuing authorizations to fund the government until Obama was inaugurated in January of 2009. Once the Democrats were in complete control, they voted in the $862 Billion 'stimulus' package in mid-February of 2009, and also the 'porkulus' bill, and only after that did they finally pass a 2009 Budget (early March of 2009) which called for huge spending increases and a $Trillion+ Deficit.

I know it sounds good to 'blame Bush', but the facts belie your claims.

I guess this would be called "An Inconvenient Truth".

Wait did Jody say that Obama spent money during an economic collapse and Bush spent money when the economy was alright and Bush is the bad guy? The logic you're using doesn't make any sense.  Beside Obama has had two years to Bush's eight so don't get all excited yet.

Why then do republicans insist that Pres Obama should not do the same.

Are you supporting it?  You say it's bad for the republicans to do it, but it's okay for Obama to do it because everyone else did.  That's not how it works! If he is so amazing, why hasn't he tried to be the one that didn't do it.  And by the way, where did you get those "facts"?

As a Canadian living in Toronto (only 2 hours from the U.S. border) I have seen the endless political advertisements on television for various candidates running for Congressional and State offices. This is nothing new, but what I find truly appalling is the level of mean spiritedness and just plain vitriol in these advertisements. I am also shocked at some of the misinformation contained in some of these ads as it borders on libel.

Surely America can be a shining example to the world on civility and good old fashioned respect for one another. I wonder what the great American founding fathers would say if they were to witness this behavior.

    Marie, et al

Your analogy is skewed. If you have two kids and one car in the family and the older child got full use of the family car in the evenings. On the eve of the 2nd child's 16th birthday, 1st child TOTALS said car. You are now saying child 1 has NO culpability or responsibility to repair the situation? Regardless, the FAMILY still has a job to get to - so are you saying we don't repair the car and we just sit around the house not going to work, not paying the bills because we haven't worked to earn money to pay to fix the car? Republican math doesn't make sense to me. The car still needs to be towed and repaired OR replaced. Need versus WANT. Bush WANTED tax cuts. His theory is that they were a surplus that should be returned to the people. His reality was that he spent like a drunken sailor and NEVER put his spending on the books. So what NOW appears to be NEW deficits are in actuality the REALITY of Bush's spending spree. But I guess you are okay with supplementals that never reflect the REAL financial picture? Sure,...

Who would have paid for that, insurance, who would have paid for the insurance premiums? The cupboard is bare (but luckily they continued paying their insurance premiums),all because the previous republican driven agenda drove the economy off a cliff which caused alot of Americans to be laid off. Now the car is back on the road. Now hopefully, with economy improving, they just might be able to fill that cupboard again. Unless those compassionate conservatives return to rob the cupboard once again.

    Hows that for ya!

The way State polls are being conducted have changed considerably. I heard Chuck Todd answer in a live discussion yesterday that they do not have much confidence in the state polls when asked about the polls.

The majority of pollsters in the red states are Republicans sympathizers and they have personal tendency to show Republican candidate as being a head in the polls. They are using the polls to make people believe that Republicans are posed to gain seats in the congress.

Some of these pollsters never supported the health care bill and are now using the polls as their weapon of making sure that the party they are sympathizing with (Republicans/Teabaggers) wins.

They are applying the same methods that they applied in the year 2000.

Look at the actual trend based on those who have voted early. They are Democrats. The majority of those who have voted early are Democrats and this obviously tells how the actual trend will turn out to be unless Republicans come up with some hanging chads as they have done in the previous years.

What do you expect the estimates of the polls to be in a situation where Republicans poll themselves? In a situation where the majority of firms conducting the polls are infiltrated by pollsters who are Republican sympathizers, it becomes extremely misleading for people to blindly believe in the polls without verifying the pollsters' political affiliation.

The final results of these midterm elections will be a surprise to many Republicans.

I live in Des Moines, the heart of Iowa 3. This race is considered a toss-up. I live in the more Democratic area of town, and even down here, the Republican challenger is winning the Battle of the Yard Signs. After their debate Monday night, in the local TV station's website comment section, it took a loooooooong time for anyone to defend the Democratic incumbent.

      Reply#12 - Fri Oct 29, 2010 9:25 PM EDT

Just only 23 months ago, Americans were crying for Democrats to rescue them from Republican's terrible policies that had resulted into a terrible economic situation.

Democrats came to Americans rescue by agreeing to inherit a horrible economic situation caused by Republicans' bad policies and mismanagement; a horrible economic situation that would definitely take any good government years to fix.

While Democrats are still in the process of fixing the mess left behind by Republicans, some Americans have already forgotten how messy Republicans leadership was just 2 years ago and are ready to vote them back together with their same failed policies that caused the mess.

Should Republicans win, just give voters only a few months and you will see them running back to the Democrats again, crying and asking Democrats to rescue them from Republicans mismanagement as they did in 2008; unfortunately the Democrats this time should not agree to do that.

Americans will have to look for a different party to rescue them from Republicans impending mismanagement and should never think that Democrats are ready to rescue them again.

Democrats are not in the business of fixing messes left behind by Republicans and then once they finish fixing the messes, Republicans come back and create the mess again.

Some things are guaranteed regardless of what happens on Nov. 2:

1.) The Republicorp will blame any losses on non-existent voter fraud (they've already started ratcheting up this fiction).

2.) After Nov. 2, the already improving/growing economy under Obama will continue to improve, and the Republicorp will take credit for it in 2012, saying their "policies" improved things. In the reality-based community we already know the deficit has gone down slightly under Obama, there's more fiscal transparency (wars are on the books), the stock market has been on a roll, private industry profits have been setting records..and more private sector jobs have been created since Obama took over than in 8 years under Bush.

3.) The media will continue to miss one of the biggest stories of the campaign and that's Fox "News" (always put the word news in quotes) is THE media and propaganda arm for a political party. For the first time in history amajor media outlet with a huge reach has financially supported a party directly, distorted truths, slanted reporting, manufactured their own narrative and who's programming was used for fundraising. If you don't agree - or rather understand -this is what's really going on you'rea moron, plain and simple.

4.) Sarah Palin will continue to create word salads and throw the word "mandate" around.

5.) Though the majority of races are EXTREMELY close, the media, following Fox's lead, will jump all over themselves on Wednesday saying its a "sweep," "romp," etc. and will push aside victories by Democrats.

6.) A large number of Tea Party backed candidates who do win will embarass themselves once in office with their ineptitude, inexperience and tunnel vision.

7.) The Reublicorp will continue to support policies that encourage companies to move jobs overseas (remember that under Bush they pushed through tax policies that rewarded companies to move jobs overseas; this past year they successfully blocked a rollback of those tax breaks)

8.) Televangelist Glenn Beck will continue to be absolutely crazy with his horse's ass historical and religious views. And millions of Americans will be suckered into buying his books, gold scams and incredibly, sending money to the Chamber of Commerce to support their efforts in helping giant corporations step on the middle class

9.) There will be more Beck-inspired violence and the media will continue their both sides do it bull@!$%#

10.) Republicorp Facisism will continue to grow.

Republicans have been sabotaging the economy to make sure there is no economic growth until they are the ones in charge. They are now looking forward to being rewarded by some voters on Tuesday for having done that.

I have been listening to 'Rosh Lumbaugh', the Republican spokesman, and repeatedly, he has been announcing to all his fellow rich Republicans not to bank their money in American banks but to hide their money in foreign banks.

Lemba has been saying this repeatedly using negative speculations to help sabotage any possible economic growth.

Rosh Luembough and his other Republican cohorts have also been telling his fellow Republicans to withdraw the investments they have in stock market and put them in gold.

This Lemba and his fellow talk show hosts have been urging employers not to hire people and if possible, lay off as many people as possible. All these negative speculations and scare tactics this Lemba and his group have been using to sabotage the economy have made the economy to grow at a slower pace than had been predicted.

Lemba has always said they are withdrawing their investments from the economy and 'hoard' them somewhere until Republicans get elected.

After November election, Lemba and those who have been taking instructions from him probably plan to bring back the money they have been hoarding and inject it back into the economy. Those employers who responded to Lemba's call to lay off people may also rehire to justify Lemba's allegations that Republicans are better than Democrats.

I AM ONLY REFERRING TO ALL THAT THIS MAN HAS BEEN SAYING. ALL THESE THINGS THIS MAN HAS BEEN SAYING ARE ALL IN RECORD SO HE CAN NOT LATER COME UP AND DENY THAT HE DID NOT SAY THEM.

The way this man and his cohorts have been talking about President Obama is just like the president is his grandchild. Even though the US president is younger than him, I know he is an old man; he should at least have some respect for the highest office of the land.

We currently have the President of the United States working round the clock trying to fix the economy by all possible mean AND Lembau and his group working round the clock scaring people not to invest in the economy.

The man has been very rude and is now waiting for voters to reward him for having rude to the president of the US.

This election is an amazing validation of our constitution. We are truely imbued with inalianable rights.

I grew up in the deep south. I understand racial bias. Consequently, I was expecting the president, based on his promise, to deliver a substantial improvement in the overall comity and quality of our government's performance - to deliver real leadership in finally uniting a one-America. I have been disappointed

He has proven to be the most divisive figure in my lifetime - I am pretty old. He has set the urban/suburban/rural divide and the racial progress in this country back to 1864. He manifestly hates southern white men. He has proven to be a half-African american, a mendaceous imposter, a Chicago street urchin, a racist, and these are the nice things I can say about him.

I know he is doing his very best and that is the pitiful part.

This election shows the dissapointment of mainstream America in this respect. I pray that he changes or otherwise that he stays alive until we can throw him out in 2012.

              Yellowcake from NIGER, please.

His very best would have been to tell Harry Reid to make the RE-peat-the-lie-to-the-PUBLIC-ans either stand up and truly filibuster or sit down and vote.

I don't know why he didn't do that other than it wouldn't have sped up the economic recovery, no matter how much legislation they would have passed. (300 bills out of the house never got a vote in the Senate because of the fake filibuster by the rethugs) He must have made the political calculation that it would be better to have the opposition sharing the blame for the stagnation and high unemployment in his first two years and suffer the midterms.
