Steele: 'I'm familiar with foot-in-mouth disease'

Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele said on Sunday that he can relate to candidates whose campaigns have been pockmarked by poor publicity over gaffes or misstatements.

"Folks make mistakes," said Steele during an appearance on NBC's Meet the Press, "Lord knows I'm familiar with foot in mouth disease."

Some GOP candidates -- particularly those who are relative political novices propelled to victories in their party primaries by Tea Party forces -- have faced criticism over statements made during televised debates and appearances over the course of the 2010 campaign. Last week, Delaware Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell appeared to be unfamiliar with the language of the First Amendment; Colorado's Ken Buck equated homosexuality with alcoholism during a debate last Sunday on Meet the Press. Nevada's Sharron Angle faced ridicule after telling Hispanic students that "some of you look a little more Asian to me."

Steele, whose two year tenure at the helm of the GOP committee has been marked by gaffes and lackluster fundraising, said that candidates often misspeak in "the heat of a battle" but that voters will ultimately choose representatives in Washington who will fight for their interests.

"What really matters is how voters receive that, how the voters look at those candidates," he said, adding that "people understand where their heart is."

Asked if O'Donnell would make a good senator, Steele said, "I think she would be. Again, I don't get to make that judgment. The people in her state get to make that judgment."

What seems strange to me is watching Republicans constantly ignoring obvious facts in order to spew their blindly idiotic "Let's all go back to 1960" agenda. It's not enough to be the party of no, but they have NO workable soulutions except reduce healthcare and lower taxes, which will deepen the debt they falsely claim to hate. It makes NO SENSE whatsoever. They can't have it both ways so they decide to use degrading scare tactics to gain favor and votes.

I've come to the conclusion that most Republicans are just not very smart about the global world we live in and they don't care about their ignorance. The response is always an attack based on only one side of the story. Besides, everyone knows racism is rampant in their ranks, especially in the tea bagger branch of the GOP.

Has watching FOX Newz really dumbed Republicans and baggers down that much?

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Where does it say separation of church and state?

Following Whitby, the English church was under papal authority for nearly a thousand years, before separating from Rome in 1534 during the reign of King Henry VIII. A theological separation had been foreshadowed by various movements within the English church such as Lollardy, but the English Reformation gained political support when Henry VIII wanted an annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon so he could marry Anne Boleyn. Under pressure from Catherine's nephew, the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, Pope Clement VII refused the annulment. Eventually, Henry, although theologically a doctrinal Catholic, took the position of Supreme Head of the Church of England to ensure the annulment of his marriage. He was excommunicated by Pope Paul III.[5]

Source Wikipedia:

The original intent for some was that the Federal government could not make a national religion. Such as what occurred in England when the church of England was formed.

“My job is to make sure he is.” That is the response Republican National Chairman Michael Steele gave to David Gregory, moderator of Meet the Press, when asked whether he thought Barack Obama would be a one term president. Understanding that Mr. Steele has responsibilities to the RNC which involve promoting their ideas of what is best for the country and what direction it needs to go in, that response shows what the primary problem with the party is. It is concerned about its own well-being and not that of the American people. His job is to let the American people know what the Republican Party will do for them. It is the responsibility of the people of the United States of America to decide whether Barack Obama’s presidency will continue after 2012.

This has been the modus operandi for both political parties for decades and probably the reason the Tea Party has been so popular and so successful. Most Americans are tired of the same routine every political cycle. The same rhetoric, the same promises, the same campaign slogans, the same political attacks, the same everything, including the same behavior once the politician gets into office; do what they want and ignore everything they told the American people. The Tea Party represents that segment of the public that has said ‘I’ve had enough.’ If the politicians in my state and in Washington are not going to listen to us, we will put people in office who will, whether they have experience or not. Contrary to popular belief, I do not think the TP is part of the Republican establishment. I think many have conservative views but that is it. I also do not think all of them promote prejudice and racism. I do believe that some TP people have extreme views that may be hurting the Tea Party as a whole as well as the Republican Party. But, there is no denying that the TP has energized the Republican Party, particularly its base. However, people should not think that the appearance of being “energized,” or the lack thereof, is any indication of whether a person is going to vote.

Britt Hume said it best on Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace, when he stated that, and I am paraphrasing, it does not matter whether a person is energized when he goes to vote or if someone has to drag him out of bed, it still only counts as one vote. In addition, people are energized in different ways. Some people jump up and down, yell and scream while others, during that same instance, may appear calm and collected. Being energized does not necessarily manifest itself outwardly. Remember the tortoise and the hare? The hare thought the race was won before it even started. He lost (forgive the ‘he’ reference but Bugs Bunny was male and that’s where I remember it from). I watch a lot of politics and what I am looking for is someone who is honest. That does not mean that the person has never done anything morally or secularly wrong, it means that the person simply tries to do the right thing and be honest with the American people.

When NPR fired Juan Williams (which to me was wrong on so many levels) for admitting a person flaw, it was so indicative of what is wrong with the political climate in this country. In a time when Americans view politicians so negatively, the one thing they are looking for is honesty. It is okay to be flawed. Admit it. Then, work on improving yourself. I am black. Every morning I wake up knowing I am prejudiced. It is not something I want to be or intended to be but I am of the United States of America. Prejudice and racism was a couple of things this country was founded on. I was born into prejudice. Similar to Christians saying they were born into sin. However, I tell myself everyday that I am going to try to be a better person. Americans do not expect their politicians to be perfect but they are now expecting them to try to be a better politician, if not a better person.

I saw the interview. Steele didn't answer any questions!! He merely redirected to his "Milk Toast" soaky bread mantra. He has yet to AFFIRM COMPLETELY that the Tea Party Values are that of the Republican PaRTY. HE CAN ONLY STAND ON THAT SINKING SAND, IF HE DOESN'T SAY WHAT the tea party holds to, he'll loss his control over his private "imaginary" Republican party. As a former Republican Steele does not impress me!! They need to throw away those old CUE CARDS they've used.

He stuck his whole body into the sand on the "Money trail" of anonymous Influence buying. He really doesn't want the press to show the "Proof" it'd make him appear a "PUPPET" for the EXTREME MILITANT RIGHT WING , The Tea PaRTY.

Meet the Press is a joke. Forget the days of Russert and other probers before him... it's all about Gregory now. Like most so-called "news" broadcasts these days, the personality presenting the story... is more important than the story itself. The shows name should be changed to "Meet the Self-Absorbed."

This is the way to fix the problems in our country:

        1. Term Limits.

12 years only, one of the possible options below..

        A. Two Six-year Senate terms
        B. Six Two-year House terms
        C. One Six-year Senate term and three Two-Year House terms

        2. No Tenure / No Pension.

A Congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they are out of office.

        3. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security.

All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately.

All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people.

        4. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.

        5. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

        6. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.

        7. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.

        8. All contracts with past and present Congressmen are void effective 1/1/11.

The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen.
Congressmen made all these contracts for themselves.

Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career.
The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s),
        then go home and back
        to work.

If you agree with the above, pass it on. If not, just delete

Coons didn't know the protections of the first amendment and what Coons said is not in the constititution anyway, it is from a note Thomas Jefferson wrote and how a leftist KKK member and lawyer appointed by FDR to the supreme court defined it in the case of Everson v. Board of Education in 1947.

Sure, Steel knows about foot and mouth disease. He is a victim of it. Talk of double talk!!! When asked whether O'Donnel would be good for the Senate he said yes and then quickly followed up with of course, it is not me who would put her there it would be up to the people of Delaware voters. Now, he has an out!!! He can always say it was an opinion and it was actually Delaware voters fault that they had an incompetent senator. Damn it, a Republican blaming his republican voters if ever his candidate does not meet up to expectations. Now how on Earth could you depend on this person's assurances when he shows a double face clearly in public. Laughing outside but clearly crying inside.

Spend those billions of dollars for better use? I would take a second look into their program. But NO SIR!!
I think the choice is very simple and easy for people like me who make less than 20k/year. I will never give my vote for the party who fight for their billionaires buddies TAX CUT ($100k/person). I will not vote for the party who will abolish social security, education for my grandson and health care for little people like me.

        NO...NO..NO...!!!

Want to know why the republicans get mad about civil rights? It has nothing to do with equal rights at all and everything to do with the power democrats/government gain by using and expanding powers via the comerce clause.

LBJ was totally against civil rights 8 years before he was for it and the reason was he wanted power within the Commerce Clause so the government would have more power over business and the individual and that is a fact.

So to fit this together democrats were against the Civil Rights acts until they gained more power via the comerce clause.
