O'Donnell far behind in two new polls

Christine O’Donnell may have received enough national recognition to prompt a Saturday Night Live cold open, but two new polls show that the Delaware Republican appears unlikely to be the state's next U.S. senator.

A University of Delaware poll released Wednesday showed O’Donnell trailing Democrat Chris Coons by 19 points. And a Fairleigh-Dickinson University poll showed Coons up 53 percent to 36 percent.

For all the national buzz that the Palinesque perennial candidate has received, her supporters in her home state are comparatively lukewarm about her bid, according to the Delaware poll. Only one third of O’Donnell supporters said that they would be “very disappointed” if she lost the race, compared to two-thirds of Coons supporters who said the same about the Democratic candidate.

Tea Party darling O’Donnell stunned GOP rival Rep. Mike Castle, a moderate former governor with broad appeal and high name ID in the heavily Democratic state, in the state’s Sept. 14 Republican primary. The Fairleigh-Dickinson poll showed that Castle would be leading a hypothetical matchup with Coons by double digits.

Both polls also showed the Democrat in the race with a substantial advantage among independents, a phenomenon that could affect other Tea Party-affiliated candidates. Only 25 percent of independents nationwide have a positive opinion of the Tea Party movement, according to the latest NBC/WSJ poll. And more than half of independents said they have a negative impression of Sarah Palin, whose endorsement helped to vaunt the little-known O’Donnell to primary victory.

Well, well, well......there is still hope for this country after all. Imbeciles like O'Donnell have no business being within 100 miles of Congress, let alone elected to it. We have enough nincompoops in Congress without putting the Queen of Stupidity in there, too.

I don't see where the Dems who are sittin' in those Congress seats now are any bright lightbulbs. Thanks to them and their Progressive ie Communist Leader you can see where we are. And if the the people of DE buy into the "Bearded Marxist" in Coons then they're fools. I'd much rather have a gal who has had to struggle than the idiot politician who got on the public free ticket and never got off!

If you look back you could see we are where we are because of the idiot from texas took us into an a war we could not win and a trillion dollars later and oh yea...4500 hundred dead americans as well. And the oil from there was going to pay for the war..how did that work out?trouble is the gop never saw a big business they didnt like of a war they would not fight.oh and that gal that had to struggle, maybe if the idiot would just get a real job and quit this little ponzi scheme of running for office and paying all her bills with the donations, and sadly realize shes an idiot and go to work for palin and possibly do some snl appearances.

As a proud resident of Sussex County, Delaware, I think Christine O'Donnell is an embarrassment to citizens of this fine state. She is not qualified for the job. She is being used as a media darling by her equally loopy Tea Party cohorts. We need citizens to take governing our country seriously. Elections should not be media circuses, nor should they be popularity contests. Candidates should be elected based on qualifications. The United States Senate is not the place to learn a job, but to carry out a job.

We need citizens to take governing our country seriously You're kidding right? The Leftist Liberal Elitist Progressives ie Communists that are in charge of Congress now?? Then you go ahead and vote for the guy who's in favor of Stimulus, Health Care Reform and all of the other economy tanking policies of this administration. That "Bearded Marxist" Coons. How pathetic. I would think that the people in DE would be made of stronger stuff but obviously not!

ann you demonize healthcare reform, stimulus (which history shows in Europe, it worked for the Germans and French who have an amazing economy now) like all of America is against it. Obviously Delaware residents support those "evil" policies. Oh and I love your comparison to Marxism (which is not soviet communism) to Liberals to Progressives - which by the way are not alike - to what the American people have voted for; this is nothing close to communism. Shows your passionated ignorance very well try getting a little education about higher politics, and fashion a response that isn't from only one or two sources. (Fox and News Radio)

Is anyone really surprised by this? Honestly, no one took her serious except this "Tea Party Express". Not even establishment GOPs, to include Karl Rove (although he was forced to tone it down) took this O'Donnel seriously. The biggest key to understanding that is seeing how the RNCC and the RNC refused to give any money to her campaign.

Ahh foreshadowing for November, pit very far right conservatives against Dems and the losses don't look so bad for the Dems. Also it's important to note that "America is Angry with Government" really means that American Conservatives are angry with Republicans, if they are voting out their better, winnable, candidates. The GOP really screwed the pooch on the idea that America wants their country back. The same will be in 2012 for Obama. The Moderates are going to be too alienated from voting GOP that they'll approach more moderate Dems and GOP. I hope this is a lesson learned for the GOP

I don't see how the people up there think that Chris Coons is such a prize. For cipes sake, he's just a part of the problem. Why in the world anyone would brag on the leftie libs out there is beyond me. They're the death of our country as witnessed by their control these past four years. The mentality of these lefties is crutially demented and the country is suffering because of the likes of the 'Coons' types.

Unfortunately 501(c) groups will probably end up deciding how this election will be played out. If they suspect that O'Donnell has no chance, they will pull away and go after markets that they think they can influence, it is much bigger than her. Yes, it is still local and that is how these groups will manipulate the bigger picture.

She doesn't understand what evolution is, but you think she can make decisions of science in Congress? Please. She will rule by the bible..you know, that collection of stories written years and years after the death of her saviour that are not meant to be taken literally, and certainly not meant to run a country by. Stay in Texas...perhaps we will let it leave the Union next time....

Isn’t Joe Biden from Delaware, Barney Frank from Massachusetts and name your poison from California? It is nice to know that a majority of the Nation’s 17% of wackos have chosen to live near one and other. A democrat winning Delaware is about as rare as Obama reminding us who was President before him. The current Administration’s disregard for the will of the people, you know the other 83% not living in liberal la la land, ultimately will be the demise of the current regime.

Lion, here is the problem I have. Obama pretty much is doing what he said he was going to do. The platform he is implementing is consistent with his campaign. I will not say whether I agree with it or not, but here is the point. The Bush Cheney Administration ran on a "Smaller Government, Lower Taxes" platform, and this is NOT what they did. We got somewhat lower taxes, but we did not get less government, we got more. Whether you like them or not, Obama and his fellow liberals pretty much govern the way they ran. Thus far the only Conservative to do that was Ronald Regan. Recent experience with Republicans is that they do NOT do what they say.

                      #68.5 - Wed Oct 6, 2010 4:15 PM EDT

Uhh wait a minute Reagan didn't cut government...maybe in bureaucracies that were obsolete like lingering wastes from the New Deal, but he grew the military by leaps and bounds and cut taxes and put us in a recession ('83).

He signed tax raises for the last 6 years of his presidency to try to pay for the military he "beat the Soviets" with. Even Bush Sr. had to raise the taxes after he promised no new taxes. Clinton left thos tax rates the same until Bush Jr. came to the white house making that Surplus.

We invade Afghanistan and Iraq and cut taxes again to NOT pay for the two wars and WOW we are in a recession again. See the pattern?

But you guys don't need a history lesson.

Keith - You are right, Obama did pretty much keep most of his campaign promises, albeit a watered down version, but did a pretty decent job. The illusion of "America not wanting his 'Change'" is a facade put on by Fox News when infact the American people voted him in knowing exactly this is what they would get.

I don't thionk 17% is dictating ANY policy. The Senate and House watered down all the legislation to appease moderates and hopes of snagging a GOP. If the 17% indeed dictated policy, we would have a public option, full withdrawl from Iraq and NO funding for Afghanistan.

I ... DO... hope you're right. I'm not even a Democrat. I'm a well educated American ... sometimes leaning Democratic, sometimes Republican, mostly Independent. Most of what Obama is being blamed for is not his fault. I do believe that his stimulus was structured towards putting money into governments and public sector projects, and I believe that it would have worked better if there had been more emphasis on the small business sector, but I just don't get vilifying him for that. McCain would have had a stimulus and it would have been about the same size. He would have bailed GM out. There was no room for Obama to maneuverer there. We are not going to know how his health care program is going to work for a number of years. Anyone who thinks they know how any of this is going to tun out a few years from now is simply telling us that they don't actually know very much. I hate campaigns based on innuendo and smoke & mirrors, and so far, that is all that I see from the Republicans.

Most tea party members would never vote democrat, regardless of who the candidates are. (Akin to how, unfortunately, most african americans won't vote republican regardless of how much of a scumbag the democratic nominee is. Believe me, I live in Memphis, and know this first hand.)

Then there are an equally large number of true blood democrats and true blood republicans that also vote strongly along party lines.

Which leaves us with, unfortunately, a rather small 20% or so of Americans that actually make a choice based on a myriad of factors. These are the ones that decide most contests.

You don't need to run a candidate who can get the votes of the party faithful, you need to run a candidate who can get the votes of those whose opinion is actually capable of being swayed.

The tea party candidates that are being currently presented alienate these voters far more than they win them over, much to the delight of the democrats.

InTheMiddleTx is ignorant as are most people from Texas. Failing to pay taxes (IRS Not Left wing news organizations), Lying about a college degree, stealing campaign donations are something this woman did well after high school and as an adult. This woman is the typical GOP Gal these days. Short on brains but Big on Mouth!

Anyone surprised she's behind? She's literally been in hiding. No local campaign events in DE on her schedule. She herself said she was going to avoid the national media to address DE and local interests, and where was she spotted today? DC, in the senate offices. Stick a fork in her Sarah Mini-Me is history.
