Christine O’Donnell may have received enough national recognition to prompt a Saturday Night Live cold open, but two new polls show that the Delaware Republican appears unlikely to be the state's next U.S. senator.
A University of Delaware poll released Wednesday showed O’Donnell trailing Democrat Chris Coons by 19 points. And a Fairleigh-Dickinson University poll showed Coons up 53 percent to 36 percent.
For all the national buzz that the Palinesque perennial candidate has received, her supporters in her home state are comparatively lukewarm about her bid, according to the Delaware poll. Only one third of O’Donnell supporters said that they would be “very disappointed” if she lost the race, compared to two-thirds of Coons supporters who said the same about the Democratic candidate.
Tea Party darling O’Donnell stunned GOP rival Rep. Mike Castle, a moderate former governor with broad appeal and high name ID in the heavily Democratic state, in the state’s Sept. 14 Republican primary. The Fairleigh-Dickinson poll showed that Castle would be leading a hypothetical matchup with Coons by double digits.
Both polls also showed the Democrat in the race with a substantial advantage among independents, a phenomenon that could affect other Tea Party-affiliated candidates. Only 25 percent of independents nationwide have a positive opinion of the Tea Party movement, according to the latest NBC/WSJ poll. And more than half of independents said they have a negative impression of Sarah Palin, whose endorsement helped to vaunt the little-known O’Donnell to primary victory.

When a candidate has to assure voters that "I'm not a witch," it's clear that she's in trouble. Also, her talk about "cloned mice with human brains" doesn't give a lot of voters that warm fuzzy feeling. I don't think Christine O'Donnell is a bad person. She's just goofy and, if elected, would be a disaster at governing.
i guess you would like more of the same no jobs, hugh spending i think you libs have done enough damage give me some people who have any kind of a brain i feel sorry for you little minded --------
jockland: The problem is, she doesn't have a brain. She is an idiot, and you are also if you think she has one.
Jockland, you do realize that the Bush Republican agenda is why we have high unemployment currently and if the Democrats would have not passed the stimulus bill unemployment would be much higher? Get the facts for yourself from an independent source.
The repugs always seem to forget that part.
Comrad Coons raised taxes three times to double digit increases while he managed New Castle, and they still have a mutimillion dollar deficit for the next 5 years.
taxes 3, cuts 0: sound familiar?
ABC=anyone but coons
Mitch - So please do check back with us when Anyone but Coons loses (ABCL).
There are lots of ways to lose elections. O'Donnell appears to have stumbled into most of them. I'm willing to wait and see the outcome on election day, which will be very curious, I'm sure.
There are still those who will vote for her.
But like IntheMiddle TX, I am a Texan, too and have no direct interest in that race she's in. It's just a political curiosity. I do agree, though, that if she loses, she will pocket the money and run... out the door. There is a chance, however, that FIXed News might take her as a loser, just like they did Sally Palin the loser, and give her her own hate show on TV -- "The Bewitching Hour" -- where she can cast spells on all her political foes. LOL ... Stranger things have happened... in politics and in entertainment.
This woman makes Sarah Palin look smart. Maybe Palin should tab her for vice president in 2012. That would seal the deal for Obama.
I certainly don't want O'Donnell to win in Delaware. I want to see a Palin/O'Donnell in 2012 ticket. Like a hurricane teaming up with an earthquake.
Palin/O'Donnell in 2012 Dope and Strange!
Twit& Tweet 2012
Waiting to see Harry Reid get his ass handed to him......
Have you thoroughly thought about the consequences of that?
w Bush, apparently he hasn't because Angle is almost as wacky as O'Donnell. Where do they come up with these people?
And the loony left puts people like Alan Greyson, Cynthia McKinney and other nut-jobs in Congress....
Pot/kettle/black.
Anyone is better than the lying, disrespectful, deceitful Harry Reid.
The sooner we get rid of the neo-Socialists...the sooner we can start to correct some of the foolishness of the past 4 years.
You would think they'd have learned by now. People stopped taking McCain seriously when he took on Palin, so why did they think that someone who makes Palin look good would have a better chance?
I have to wonder where polls that show she has 36% backing were taken....Texas?
Some very interesting news will come out soon about Coons. Trust me. The way you all rejoiced at the way the Dems got dirty in the Whitman-Brown race, you should have no problem with it, right? lol Idiot socialists. You asked for it.
In teabagger speak...pointing out a FACT is "dirty"....while CONSTANTLY REPEATING LIES....like "Kenyan", "Muslim" or "Marxist" is "Fair and Balanced"
Idiot Teabaggers
This vacuous little broad is a clown.........and is of such little importance that after this first and last post i won't even bother to comment on her insignificance........after she loses this one election she will never be heard from again, so we might as well start ignoring her now.
The woman is a loser, she and Palin could start a comedy team, call it Dumb and dumber.
The media did not destroy this gal...she is a hard one to explain away, with flat out lying about her college education, etc. What was the point of that? As though someone somewhere wasn't going to check her claims? Am GOP and am VERY glad I don't live in Delaware.
The media always seems report as if these mid-term elections are based on some national message. This shows that congressional elections are local. I think as you see folks shifting their attention to the impending elections that more of these races will tighten up. Issues and elections will be local and not based on some larger national agenda (or anti-agenda). If you go state by state and House by House district, the numbers show GOP taking a slime majority in the House and Democrats retaining a slight lead in the Senate (tie breaker with the VP). It forces both sides to legislate (building concession) or shut the whole process down. The later is very bad for the country regardless of the rhetoric.
miguel457........that typo was really a freudian slip, wasn't it ? GOP taking a "slime" majority ?
It was intentional... slime is what I meant. I say this because of the rhetoric I keep hearing.
seems to me the party of hell no has done a pretty good job of shutting down any progress ,its called fillibuster..
I agree, but quite a few of the democrats don't really deserve to be returned to Wash, they have failed us. The only reason a lot of them will be re elected is because the Tea Baggers are such whack jobs and are supporting candidates that very few trust to do anything intelligent if they were in office.  Sadly, it is the nut job Tea Baggers that will actually save the jobs of many democrats !
I am mad as hell at a lot of what is going on in congress, but I sure am not crazy enough to want the Tea Baggers in there, it is a question of the lesser of two evils, and in this case the democrats are certainly the lesser evil, that does not mean I am pleased with them.
I wonder how you can assume that a Tea Bagger will save jobs? Have you seen where some the 501(c) groups running anti-democratic adds have been getting money from? Global corporations... they have no intention on moving jobs back to the US.
MM-, I too am very upset with the way the democrats are acting of late. I regret that they are running away from their accomplishments as well as cowering to the republicans during the past 20 months but I will not compromise my vote for those that wish to take us back to the stone ages.
Democrats all the way, Ye ha!!!!!!!!!
DUH! Has anyone noticed that NONE of these people who garnered a nomination are electable at this point? The last month is when those who are fortunate enough to not follow politics get involved. None of these people are truly leading, only 2 are borderlined and the gap will widen as we get closer to actually standing in the voting booth.
They were an interesting diversion, but face it, they're all unqualified and not to be taken seriously. Being angry isn't an excuse to deliberately anoint someone Senator for 6 years who has no business even checking parking meters.
Palin and her teabaggers are going to get a whooping that they deserve. Rove and Newt just need to retire they`re GOOD OLD BOYS club (wink, wink). They say they are not racist, ok maybe they`re not on the surface (undercover as the KKK). The stguff that comes out of these people mpouths are just incredible. Think people before you vote. Do you want thhe same thing that got us into this mess in the first place or do you want people trying their hardest to get us from it.
THINK BEFORE YOU VOTE.............
Â
Bravo! Thanks for putting it in perspective for ALL to see and understand.
Throw her out and put Castle back on the ballot. There is still time.
If they have state laws like that of Alaska, then Castle can be a write in otherwise. No go... anyone from DE know the laws?
Castle has refused to be a write-in candidate. I guess that he figures that they deserve what they voted for.
Castle has already publicly stated he has no interest in being a write-in candidate. As for "throwing O'Donnell out", she won the election legally, and even if she could legally be replaced on the ballot, at this point it would be too little too late. Those who voted for her in Delaware are now learning some painful lessons about jumping on bandwagons that are just empty shells covered with meaningless bumper sticker-style slogans. Hopefully those who are contemplating voting for similar candidates in other states can still come to their senses.
hey morons, Castle figured out that by running as write in he would suck votes from Coons. Coons is Reid's lap dog, to vote any way hes told until baby bobo wants the seat.
Write in Castle you can do it.
Terrorists don't need to attack us here. Just let O'Donnell and the other nut cases like her get elected. The can run the country and we'll just implode.
Right now I think Rosey O'Donnell stands a better chance at getting elected than Crissy does.....(angry fat white middle-aged Americans are going to have to find a winnable candidate that follows their beliefs....LOL!)
I hope this happens to all of the Tea Party candidates. I'm an independent who generally votes Republican but can't stand how far to the right the TPers have moved the party.
She is a pathological liar. Case in point: Wiccans (witches as she calls them) do not worship Satan. In fact, they don't even acknowledge the existence of such a being. They do not sacrifice anyone on altars. She never "dabbled" in it or had a date on a Satanic altar.
That's just one. The woman is an absolute idiot. Perhaps they put her brain in one of those mice she talks about!
I thought about those Maher tapes, too. Then I found out that she's 41 now. So she was 30 when those interviews were done. (She may have looked like and acted like a high-schooler, but she was old enough to know better). No. The media didn't ruin her. They only reported on what she said and did. And her positions are WAY out of sync with the rest of the country. And that's why she's losing. We can only hope that "We the People" will be smart enough to see Angle, Buck, and the other tea partiers for what they are, as well
We can only hope!!!
People are afraid of the high unemployement, high foreclosures and low to no economic growth, seeing stores close down and people moving with U-Haul vans overnight. If one has a job in this environment which 89.5% of the population does, they dont need free healthcare or social programs or big government spending and massive debts, what makes them feel secure is there company and job will be around tomorrow, so if Obama would just shut up, not pass anything else and let the market correct we would feel better, but instead he is creating undue stress by creating policies and laws that no one is quite sure of the result now or in the future
How are we going to pay the debt back
are taxes going up, down or staying the same
how does the health care legislation effect private companies and others
Fannie mae, Freddie Mac ?
Too big to fail ?
on and on and on. n
none of these questions are getting answered, instead you are focusing on a small state "Delaware" which doesnt come to a hill of beans in the overall country
thanx
The way we will pay back our debt? Let ALL the Bush tax cuts expire. Not a popular democratic stance, start expanding the tax burden. A family of four making less than $50K/year has to have a stake in our country's future.
Read the Financial Reform Act that the GOP wants to repeal, they mention what to do with the likes of FMs. Even though financial institutions have gotten bigger, the GOP blocked an important provision in the Act that would have dealt with too big to fail. Don't assume that it will be solved with the GOP in charge. They want to take us back to pre-2008.
As for Health Care Reform Act... the major push was to save Medicare and secondarily to include everyone into the Health care system. This will continue to be an ideological argument. To allow for-profit corporations in charge of your health care is truly setting up death panels...
Yea I agree Miguel, I say let all the Bush tax cuts expire. Cut this military too. Over the weekend Afghans and the Taliban are talking peace talks. Cut the forces there, cut them further in Iraq. Retrench the soldiers back in the US and work on border security. Yea the middle class' taxes would raise back up but not in a strangling way to make homeless people out of them.
The defecit would turn into a surplus in one year. Don't take my word for it; look to Harvard and Yale trained economists. They had a study released in September (I couldn't find a link for proof but will reply to this when I do) laying out very good tax policies and cuts that won't affect the health and welfare of the US. Was an interesting read. Would the GOP go for it...probably not because the cuts are in industry that take away from their investments, like banks and the military industrial complex.
>How are we going to pay the debt back
Economic growth, spending cuts, and taxes. The debt commision will have a report soon and I hope the congress takes it seriously. Of course the last time we had a nearly balanced budget, our idiot president said that the people were being "overcharged" and put us back into debt with tax cuts primarily for the rich who used the money to help crash the economy.
>are taxes going up, down or staying the same
They'll need to go up some. I'd really like to see the same tax rates for capital gains and dividends as regular income (which could be a little lower if we did that). I think it would eliminate many of the games played and be more fair to everyone.
>how does the health care legislation effect private companies and others
The people concerned should read it. It is on the web for everyone to take a look at. It isn't as big as you've been told (take a look at how much white space there is per page in bills).
>Fannie mae, Freddie Mac ?
They'll have to deal with that soon. Some real decisions have to be made about home ownership and the role of government. I wonder if there will ever be a time when we have real discussions on important matters rather that political posturing. Probably not as the presidential campaign is about to start.
>Too big to fail ?
Already taken care of in the Financial Reg overhaul. The feds can now wind down companies that fail without bailouts. Repub politicians like to lie about what it does, but don't listen to someone just trying to score political points.
I want to here all these brilliant Oxford Democrats answer the questions above and then you might get some votes
Doug: How about some of you so called intelligent Republicans answering some of them? So far I have seen no ideas from them. Just rhetoric
I will answer some:
No company should be too big to fail, this creates moral hazzard and undue risk,
Taxes should remain the same until unemployment is to a normal level 7% or so
Healthcare is going to have unintended consequences that help the few who may need it to the detriment of the many who must pay for it. its a money grab from the middle class !
The only way to pay the debt back is by cutting spending, forcing a balanced budget every year in congress, streamline and make more efficient medicare, competitive bidding by state same with medicaid and raising taxes once american feel secure there dollars dont go into the abyss
Fannie and Freddie should be gone for good, private banks should assume there own loans then they will care more who they give them to
Taxes should remain until unemployment is at 7%... not sure that this is realistic. I think we need to reset what is normal. Cut spending: two largest items in the Federal Budget
HHS - $900B/year (84% Medicare and Medicaid), when you through in SS it amounts to 55% of the total budget
Defense - $750B/year (39% - 55% for Defense contractors)
Discretionary spending: $2.3B/year
What do you want to cut? I can tell you the second item is a great one to go after but don't expect a GOP run congress to go after that one, bully for defense.
