Rand Paul gets an assist from his father, DeMint

From NBC's Adam Verdugo
ERLANGER, KY -- U.S. Senate hopeful Rand Paul last night brought in two Tea Party titans to headline a fundraising rally in Northern Kentucky. One of them was his father, former GOP presidential candidate and current Rep. Ron Paul. The other was South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint.

“[DeMint] has been one of those who probably really has been involved and help get so many conservatives elected,” Rand Paul told the crowd of about 300 gathered in a Holiday Inn ballroom. “His endorsements have been a big deal across America.”

DeMint’s decisions to support certain candidates over others has caused a stir within his own party in recent contests, most notably Christine O’Donnell’s race in Delaware. He said that the Tea Party “has the establishment shaking in their boots.” His support for Paul in the GOP primary ran counter to the “establishment” pick -- Trey Grayson -- who was backed by Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell.

DeMint also told the crowd he received a thank-you note from Paul that read, “I smile when I think what we can do together in the Senate” -- to which DeMint added, “I smile when I think maybe not just us two but eight or 10 senators who believe in constitution-limited government."

DeMint is just one of the latest high-profile Republicans who have made trips to Kentucky on Paul’s behalf in the last month; Sarah Palin and Haley Barbour also have attended fundraisers in the state.

If DeMint endorses a candidate then you know that candidate is nuts.

I guess DeMint also endoses raising the Social Security age to 85 so nobody can get it. I guess that is one way to kill Social Security.

Democrats have spent the social security piggy bank on pork. Someone needs to address the tough questions. Before the checks bounce.

old fat guy. Who spent the social security piggy bank? The republicans did a lot more UNFUNDED spending than democrats. Why do you think democrats are constantly accused of being "tax and spend"? The dems at least make an effort to PAY for the legislation they pass.

Old Fat Guy

Dems spend on pork? Please check your facts, 2 unfunded wars, Medicare Pt.D a give away to Big Pharma unpaid for tax cuts. Now they plan on balancing the Budget by ending Social Security and Medicare and also privatizing the VA, deregulating the Banks and the Energy industry( Big Oil & Big Coal) and more tax cuts for the upper 2%.

You're either delusional or drinking gallons of the Faux News Kool Aid

Old fat guy, do your research and you will find that it is illegal for Congress to raid Social Security and they have not done it. Yes, I used to believe that too but I did some research and found out otherwise. Social Security is one of the few government run programs that actually works. We still find it solvent for many more years and ways can be found to keep the solvency going and make it better. Imagine if your Social Secuity payment had been invested in the stock market in the last few years? Would you ever be able to retire at all? No money to retire on as both Social Security and your 401K and IRA's would be broke. Think before you spout. Not doing so makes you look stupid. I really doubt that you are stupid but simply don't think before spouting making you LOOK that way.

Adler... my IRA and other investments have performed quite nicely thank you. I manage them myself. If my social security investment was handled by me I would be even more rich.

One other thing when you die SS stops and your spouse suffers. When I die SS still stops but my investments pass to my spouse and children.

You are all very foolish to believe the SS money is sitting in a piggy bank someplace.

Headlines - "Sen. DeMint: Keep Gays, Unwed Moms Out of Public School"
What a twisted irony when Reps want people OUT of work. What happened to the Reps who promised to be best at creating new jobs? DeMint promotes an increase in job loss for" sinners", but never mentions himself. Reps have already lost thousands of jobs for US taxpaying citizen sinners serving/dying in the voluntary US military'(during wartime). Now DeMint promotes job loss for sinners in education, too? Alert, Tim's "cleansing" has quickly esculated to include gay teacher sinners and unwed teacher mom sinners – but not unwed father sinners. Since we are all sinners, is anyone safe from future job loss at the hands of The Cleaner?

Raiding SS started with Reagan...let us not forget that.

The whole SS is going bankrupt is a bit of a red herring.  People talk about slashing benefits or raising the age but this is nothing more than a back door attempt at destroying the program and deflecting from the real issue, that being that income of about $107,000 and above is exempt.  Lift that cap and the problems go away.  Sadly very few in Washington on either side will talk about this.

      Michael....

Social Security raids did not start with Reagan. Let us not forget this:

It was Johnson the inventer of insuring senior citizens for $4.00 a month calling it Medicare.

It's hilarious to see all the lies sprung forth from these Republican AND many DINO's in the teapublican TEAPOT shrill thrill about the "NATIONAL DEBT".

Vote the the teapublican TEAPOT SHIZZLE OUT.

First, let’s be clear: Despite all the right-wing rhetoric, Social Security is not going bankrupt. That’s a lie! The truth is that the Social Security Trust Fund has run surpluses for the last quarter century. Today’s $2.5 trillion cushion is projected to grow to $4 trillion in 2023. According to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office,

It's sadly true that The Tea publican TEAPOT shizzle believes it won't be recycled into the trash bin of history once they are voted out.

TBs alike have failed to account for how fatally flawed their candidates are. Most of the tea bagger candidates who want to repeal healthcare could help their fanatically insane members in its party with healthcare they so ever need.

Wait a minute, what's all this talk about Social Security, didn't Clinton/Al Gore put those funds in a lock box? And who are the Dems to say anything about Social security when they are increasing premiums and making cuts in elderly citizens' medicare services to pay for Obamacare insurance for a bunch of twentysomething young adults that don't want coverage to begin with.

          Reply#10 - Mon Oct 4, 2010 3:43 PM EDT

Not only don't they want coverage, but now they can stay on their parents plan until age 26, costing more money. Makes so much sense...

You really don't want to go down that slippery slope because many of you are going to fall off of it. I wonder how many "sinners" have contributed to Senator Demint's campaign. Since he's so concerned about the sexual morality of public school teachers in South Carolina (he only concerned about single woman and gays, not single males), wouldn't he also be concerned about the sexual morality of people who have given him and others like it campaign money or support.

I would really have to wonder what their response or reaction would be if they were asked, "Did you have sex or any type of sexual contact before marriage? If you did, what was it? How many times and how often? With Whom? Did you ever commit adultery? Did you ever use or take drugs? Engage in underage drinking? How many people could honestly say that they have never done at least one of these things in their lifetime or youth. Most people would be very turned off by these questions if they were asked this before they gave money or supported a candidate for office.

This is why when he was asked the question about gays and single moms being teachers, he avoided the answer or said it was a local decision. You start condemning someone for their past or present behavior, then what's going to happen is your own behavior or people around you or people who gave you campaign contributions behavior will come into question by others. You may be clean but people around you or who support you are probably not. This is something politician's don't want to engage in.

When will Americans understand the oath that members of Congress take? Jim DeMint and RAnd Paul are not Ron Paul....but they are learning. The Consititution is a limiting document......it was conceived to limit the power of government and protect the natural rights of man. Ron Paul focuses on sound money and his son and Senator Demint understand our priorities.....one of the laws of leadership.

Without sound money......our society is lost. Please consider that Ron Paul is puts leadership way ahead of Party.....and he has two followers in RAnd and Jim. We can't continue this debt charade much longer. Republicans who talk about balancing the budget without defense cuts are not credible.

Please consider listening to Texas Straight talk from Ron Paul....he will be in Houston Texas next week
