Obama plugs Jon Stewart rally

During his remarks at a town hall in Richmond today, President Obama gave a plug for a rally planned by The Daily Show's Jon Stewart, called the "Campaign to Restore Sanity," contrasting the the tone of the spoof news show with that of its "purposely provocative" cable counterparts.

"What happens is these cable shows and talk show hosts, a lot of them figure out that, 'The more controversial I can be, and I'm calling Obama this name or that name and saying he wasn't born in this country, that will get me attention," the president said.

Part of the challenge of combating purposely provocative shows, Obama added, is creating a way to remind Americans that the country is not as polarized as cable shows would sometimes make it seem.

"Use Jon Stewart, the host of the Daily Show," Obama said. "Apparently he's going to host a rally called something like, 'Americans Who Favor a Return to Sanity or something like that."

He continued that most people -- like the people who will be at the rally -- have more pressing concerns than to worry about the the political beliefs of others.

"They're looking after their families," Obama said, "they don't go around calling people names, they don't make stuff up, they may not be following every single issue because they just don't have time, but they are expecting some common sense and some courtesy."

Kirby, you are quite, quite, wrong.

I am assuming that you are male. (If I'm wrong, mea culpa)

As a woman, let me tell you-I know Obama. He is 'that guy'. Every single one of my women friends recognizes him-including those who voted for him, who are now sorry, and fearful-because they thought that they had learned their lessons.

He comes out of nowhere, he comes on strong. He knows you-he cannot live without you. He is too good to be true, and sweeps you off your feet.

In short order, every little thing that goes wrong is YOUR fault. If he's two hours late, it is your problem because you are too fixated on time. If he is rude, it is because you were not properly attentive.

The abuse escalates-but it is your fault, because you made him angry.

Nothing is Obama's fault, and those who have lost faith in him are to blame, because they are too critical. They have no right to complain because they have no jobs-they should stop whining.

Talk to any woman you know about "him". You will recognize Obama.

And that is truly, truly frightening for our country. We are headed by a narcissist who has no concept, whatsoever, that he is to blame for his failures. Hell, he does not even recognize his failures.

I pray that we survive his presidency-the Iranians are taking full advantage of this disaster-so that we can right the ship.

Huh? I must not be a woman because this statement makes no sense. He admited making mistakes plenty of times, unlike his predesessor (W) who can't do no wrong, he he. Obama tried to govern like Bill Clinton, toward the center, but unlike Clinton he unable to create empathy from the public for his cause.

Everyone guesses wrong from time to time, that is not the issue. The broader issue is Is he smart enough to learn from his mistakes and improve or is he too damn stubborn and stuck to his gun.

Surprise in Seattle-you are still in his thrall.

Forkchops-not me. I was lucky-married my high school sweetheart. ALL of my girlfiriends had 'that guy' in their lives. One was unfortunate enough to actually marry him. It was she who first recognized Obama-then, finally, to the relief of everyone who loved her, she filed for divorce.

Hey, I guess I just realized Obama was responsible for something-that was, actually, good!

The only thing that could be more idiotic than voting for this "progressive, ie. socialistic" fraud would be voting for him a second time.

While we're at it I certainly hope some Americans wake up and realize where this country is headed with morons like this...and Pelosi, and formerly Bush, in charge.

We need to clean house and vote ALL incumbents out of office. Soon after we need to ensure that congress and the senate pass laws on term limits. Presidents have them, governors, and mayors have them. Why not congress and the senate?

Because they want to get rich and control everyone's lives. You are free to be successful in the US as long as you don't disturb the honey pot of these calculating criminals, "politicians" for you PC people.

Be gay all you want...don't force your beliefs on me. Be muslim, Christian, Catholic, who cares...don't force your crap onto me. I think everyone in this country has forgotten how to live and let live while we're so busy kissing the asses of every minority we forget that there is a majority being left behind. Disgraceful.

Jon Stewart is no Glenn Beck. Stewart's rally will be a failure because libs are not engaged anymore with the failed Obama administration. Obama has alienated his base as well as everyone else. I wonder if his dog has anything to do with him anymore. Libs look out. November is coming. Be very afraid.

well, Fiesty, I've been off line all day, but I went over to realcelarpolitics to see what you are talking about -

and, I don't know what you are talking about.

The only race changes, in terms of polls, are within the margin of error.

Likewise, the generic ballot changes.

And Obama's approval ratings.

So, what are you talking about? Please tell me it isn't Gallup-because Gallup is bouncing all over the place. They are having serious weighting problems.

Cook has made some changes-all bad for the Dems. Well, except for Delaware, but that is old news. are you talking about Ohio? Because if you are, I don't see a problem-the big 'average buster' was Quinnipiac-and everybody knows that they are having weighting problems. Nonetheless, Kasich is ahead, and I don't buy the 'tightening' issue by a long shot. The two pollsters that found that race a statistical tie are not noted for accuracy.

Anyway, I'm signing off for tonight. If you give me some details of your questions tomorrow, I'll be able to answer later in the afternoon. Tomorrow and Friday are 'doctor days".

yuck.

Greek Prince? Funny that Bill O'Reilly said something similar as a guest on Jon Stewart's show only a few nights back. As usual, Bill O is WRONG, and I hope someone rubs his nose in it.

The more I hear that particular viewpoint, the more I disagree.

And brace yourself for a rally in DC that will blow the doors off Glenn Beck's rally. My family is coming in from across the entire US, and I promise you....we will be there too. Even my ultra-conservative friends agree it is time to return some sanity and common sense. Common sense is NOT a "Liberal" value.....it is a true American value. We are tired of extreme view points on either side of the aisle that are "framing the argument".

The whole name calling, fear mongering, "we can't AFFORD IT!!!" (except for Military expenditures or tax cuts for the richest 2%) thing....not working.... Dumb is not the new "smart" and sensationalizing "made up" news does nothing to serve the discourse in America.

Come....join us for an afternoon of civil discourse and calm, rational discussion with your American brothers and sisters.

See you there.

I would not walk across the street to see Barack Obama or Jon Stewart. They are both symbols for what is wrong with this country. 70% of the country agrees with me. You and your liberal friends are in the minority on this issue. I am disappointed to see the country so divided, but so be it. We will beat you and take back our country in November and 2012. This is not a matter of Glenn Beck or jon Stewart.

It is the fact that the President of the United States has to utilize a Comedy Channel for his advancement.

That is sad and completely pathetic.

Earlier I argued about demeaning the office of the President saying we can because like a prom queen he is elected. Pretty darn effective evidence when he chose to demean it on his own.

I truly hope the next president uses some wrestling show since it will be legitimate. (mcMahon reference)!

You're all wrong. 92% of the contry understands that 16% of poll respondants represent 75% of likely voters in 24% of all elections. If you fall in the additional 8% of the country that diasgrees, then you are as useless as the 73% of cult members who drink 32% of the kool-aid sold in this country.

84% of all adults know that this is true.

I’m trying to understand the message sent by Obama by plugging Jon Stewart’s little rally. Is this an attempt to legitimize this farce? Does the fact that Stewart puts the words “Restoring Sanity,” in the title of his rally make it any less provocative? Throw in Colbert’s “Keeping Fear Alive” rally and now we have somehow achieved balance? So, my understanding is that according to our President, in order to end the current polarization in our country, to mend this massive ideological divide and the vitriol that it is producing is to propagate and celebrate an event that has the specific purpose of insulting and belittling the concerns of a huge portion of the country’s population. This is the actions of our great unifier? This is his answer? Of course I expect this nonsense from John Stewart and Stephen Colbert; it’s what they do for a living and although I think their views, like most liberals, are juvenile, I have no problem with them exercising their freedoms of speech and assembly. However, to have the President hold them and their rally up as models of civility that should be emulated across the country epitomizes the arrogance, condescension and intellectual inferiority with which this administration views the citizens. The Tea Parties and their offspring have been vilified by every liberal voice in Washington without a modicum of evidence to support claims racism and bigotry; unless unknowingly to me a few Joker smiles and Hitler mustaches constitute racism. Despite this fact they remain civil as they come together in a festive manner to protest out of control spending and the eventual tax increases that come along with it and when it’s all over, they clean up their mess and go back home; come to Washington after an SEIU/AFL-CIO paid for rally and see what’s left behind. Now, it seems that the strategy of this administration and the leftists in Washington, Hollywood and the media has shifted in part from vilification to humiliation; after all, if you cannot turn them into Timothy McVeighs the next best thing is to turn them into bumbling clueless fools set upon by a fog of irrational emotion. Sorry lefties, emotion is your fuel; logic belongs to the right. Look, if Washington royalty wants to call upon their jester, Stephen Colbert, to entertain them in their royal halls of Congress, it doesn’t bother me all that much because it takes their attention away from screwing up this country. If they want Colbert to come before them and juggle, do back flips, spin a freakin Frisbee on his nose or whatever else I’m fine with it; but the President of the United States should not be contributing to the further dividing of this country.

Surprise,

I don't know what they are putting in your coffee in Seattle, but Obama has never tried to govern like Clinton, no where near the center. Now you left wing nut jobs might think that Obama was to the center because he did not start controlling your lives with the government enough. I am sure that he and the others need to tell you when to go to the bathroom and that you need your check from your congressmen. But most people believe, the majority, that he ran as a centralist, but has move to the left so that you and others could have a government agency to wipe your nose for you, because you can't do it yourself. Please stay in Seattle, and keep drinking that coffee:)

Not to mention that claiming some kind of special knowledge about the president of the U.S. soley because you are a woman and not a man is rather sexist.

So now fox news and talk radio are thriving off of criticizing the president? Please Mr. President. Get off your high horse. These guys were doing perfectly well before you ever took power. PS: Smooth move to change the subject and dodge the real issues by deflecting attention away from hard questions.

One more thing: Bush weathered 8 years of name calling, disrespect, and ruthless treatment from the media. Obama is so thin skinned that it's not enough for him to have the mainstream media in his back pocket. He still goes after Fox and talk radio. What does he want? A 100% monopoly? This aint Cuba. It's America. Better get used to it. It's funny to watch liberals whine about how Obama gets criticized, or say that it's sedition. If that's true, they were the biggest culprits 2 short years ago. It's really easy for them to criticize Bush. In fact, if there was a gold medal for surviving media crucifixion, Bush would deserve it. Now Obama, their own hero, is in the ring and taking a beating. He can't handle a fraction of the same criticism Bush did. And he still whines about the fraction. What about open mindedness and tolerance? Or was that just a trojan horse? Pretty sure this = the funny hypocrisy of the decade.

I don't think so nor do I believe that 70% of anything except slugs agrees with his hate mongering racist ranting.

Return Sanity to Government and our polity. So attend John Stewart's rally if you can and if you cannot then follow it online. But do something to eradicate hater mongering which only exists as cable news makes money off covering their biased, offensive reporting.

I think it is hilarious that the notion of restoring "sanity" has cause so much anger from republicans and tea party members. On top of that, these posts PROVE the the rally, and the President are right. All the extremists are coming out, all angry, yelling about this. While the majority of the country sits back and laughs at them. You are all proving Jon Stewart and the President right . . . you are showing everyone that you are an extremist with your insults, false accusations, and old catch phrases. So by all means, keep proving us right.

On a side note, I absolutely LOVE all the candidates the Tea Party is supporting (sarcasm). LOL. Have you seen the latest one? The guy threatened to kill a reporter, and justifies it by stating that he is an angry man. Wonderful decision guys, really . . . top notch. *golf clap* So lets recap. The Tea Party now has a guy that threatens to kill people, a hypocrite who tells you what to do with your life while asking that you ignore her past mistakes, and a leader with absolutely no ideas but the uncanny ability to put meaningless words together that make the "grizzly bear" crowd swoon. Keep up the good work, Tea Party . . . you are truly doing the Lord's work.

Then turns around and calls the President a Nazi and a Marxist, smears Van Jones, Valerie Jarrett, The First Lady, Michelle Obama, Cass Sustein as well as other members in his administration and suggests the violence will come from the left.
Lady JoAnnaSmith1 you don't see that Fox is rubbish.

All your PC garbage and lend a hand nonsense that's fake. What you idiots don't seem to realize is that once you populate the entire country with illegals and muslims who do you think are the first to have their freedoms stripped completely?

Do you think sharia law is going to afford you liberal nut jobs the type of freedom you enjoy today? No it will not. You freak show left wing nut jobs will be the first ones wearing burkas or having your dopey heads lopped off. Bunch of contrarion morons.

Ah the ole Bill O'Reilly "your audience are pothead slackers" cutdown. Get out the Vote is a slogan used by non partisan organizations like League of Women Voters, Rock the Vote, and Long Distance Voter.

Comedians can help voters register to vote and become involved with issues they care about most just like any other public or private figure. Here is food for thought about one of those "jokes" whose audience consists of "potheads" and/or "idiots".

            http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon_Stewart

After graduating from the College of William & Mary in 1984, Stewart held numerous jobs. He was a contingency planner for the New Jersey Department of Human Services, contract administrator for City University of New York, puppeteer for children with disabilities, caterer, busboy, shelf stocker at Woolworth's, and bartender at a local blue-collar bar, the Franklin Corner Tavern. During part of this time, Stewart roomed with future congressman Anthony Weiner, who, to date, is the only politician to receive campaign donations from the Daily Show host.

First off who is Bill Oreilly?

Jon Stewart I know from watching Tosh.0 (which is hilarious).

Why would you take any information from a comedian? Even if he has a better resume than the President (apparently jon stewart had real jobs, unlike the President).

Just noticed Greg Giraldo Overdosed, also know he was a left wing guy, should we take his advice?

Even if you can't find it in yourselves to vote major party, there are always 3rd parties and write-ins. No vote is wasted, they all make a statement. VOTE VOTE VOTE!!!

This is why he won't produce his official birth certificate or his college records. He has things to hide. Fox brings into focus the truth about the progressives (socialists) and their agenda to fundamentally change America in France on Spain (socialist countries). Thank God for Fox Network.

Should we instead be asking ourselves.... what exactly do these mega-corporations stand to gain (other than obscene profits and viewer share) for broadcasting the profane and outrageous?

Richard Nixon refused a recount in his race with Kennedy, despite evidence that he actually won, because it would have been bad for the nation during the Cold War. The source for this is none other than Chris Matthews=he wrote an excellent book entitled "Kennedy vs. Nixon" This was published before he lost his mind, I might add.

Richard Nixon resigned from office, despite the weakness of the charges against him, because the harm being done to the country outweighed the harm done by a presidential resignation. He cited, again, the dangers of the Cold War.

To equate Obama with Nixon is an insult. Think Caligula, the mad Emperor.

It's interesting that MSNBC is not the counterpart to Fox News, Comedy Central is. At least Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert actually interview conservatives, liberals, heads of state, and real experts in their fields. Fox News only interviews Republicans and usually so that they can make a pitch. MSNBC is not organizing a ralley on the mall because they are a legitimate news organization. Fox News has promoted tea party events and Glenn Beck since Obama was elected.

I am a fiscal conservative and can honestly I could give a crap about his birthplace. I Started calling him a liar during his campaign, when he switched points during a debate with Hillary.

Since then it has been continous.

Transparency (nope White House Visitor Logs edited or lost), not a tax(yet in court a tax), Earmarks (omnibus), Tim Geithner telling Dodd to remove the No Wall Street bonuses....

Take Cap and Trade...he is lieing.

The President acts like an Environmentalist and wants Cap and Trade.

Now go look at what market is going to control Cap & Trade...look at who was on the board and owns a large percentage.

One financial Company escaped the wall street fall out. Goldman Sach's. Now go look at their 2007-2009 donations, and who sits on and owns 10% the CCX. Also go look at who received 80% and 98% of AIG's TARPII payments. (not complaining I bought 10k shares of AIG at .39 cents in 2008).

I guess this means the rally isn't bipartisan, huh?

Why didn't he feel the need to get behind the Beck rally that was actually just about taking pride in being an American? It was hosted by a Fox guy, of course, but Obama could have gotten behind a substansial crowd of citizens, many in the crowd who elected him.

I also like how he acts like he wasn't planning on plugging it the whole time.

Fox News and Glenn Beck plugged his rally enough. Why would Obama plug someone who called him a racist with a deep seated hatred for white culture?

I was thinking he would favor the spirit of the rally and support his citizens and not the emcee, who stated from the onset that there would be no political talk at the rally... He could have totally shut down Beck. Could you imagine the stupid look on his face if Obama said anything favorable about that rally?

If that's not up his alley, why didn't he acknowledge the Sharpton rally?

I'm just saying that he want out of his way to plug this as the best possible way to make sure his buddies were covered. Stewart is safe... he pokes fun, then hides in his shell when he overextends. He throws up the "what, I'm just a humble comedian" routine when he wants to avoid conflict. That's what Obama's looking for. Obama is also plugging it because the "date of no importance" just happens to come little more than a week before elections and he's hoping for people who don't like his policies to come out in droves and support all his crook Democrat friends.

And Fox news, 1 station, takes so much crap from all the other stations and all of their commentators. Think about that, it takes one station to counter the 5-10 stations of misinformation you get!

Mytjoe, really do you think anyone really believes you that Fox is the only true station? Don't be absurd. MSNBC now, let's see what does MSNBC mean? Do they say they are a NEWS station like Fox does (Fox News Channel)? No. MSNBC is commentary. They have some news on during the day. But News is not Glen Beck or Hannity. Fox is an entertainment channel. It should be called that - Fox entertainment station. Not news. Fox truly sways the truth to their fringe. They call it commentary when they bring up some pointed questions, so they don't have to say it is a lie, but it is interpreted as a truth by the viewers. And even on their News with what's his name Shepard, his innuendos when stating his "truth" and "unbiased" news is very evident to anyone who objects to the rest of the station's agenda. And yes, it is an agenda. It is a big corporation, big oil, big rightwing republican, big money agenda. There is no other station that equals anything close to Fox. You are enticed by its lies and innuendos, they have lured you in with their scary tactics. Turn it off. Think about your true values. Don't be fooled by the soft sell of Glen Beck, his dramatic tears, oh boo hoo, the letters he scrambles to make new words that somehow mean the evil new government, his fake religious stance, or even the barking of Hannity who sounds like a sports commentator, and his talking over anything said that is not Fox-like. Just the fact that Fox opinions fit your value system at this moment in your life does not make it the true news. And Fox saying that it is fair and unbiased does not make it fair and unbiased - because in fact, that is a lie. And others need to POINT that out, that Fox lies. Or there would be no "other side." News should be unbiased. A news channel should have only news on. One hour of news per day does not constitute a news channel. Even their name is misleading... just like them.

Obama IS a racist with a deep seated hatred of White people. He has done more to divide this nation along racial and class lines than any other president. He has been a complete and utter failure both to his progressive supporters and the rest of the country.

The Tea Party are the racists and THEY'RE doing the dividing! In all the videos of their Beck rally I didn't see the first black person in the crowd!

I was in Washington when they held the first tea party rally and let me tell you from first hand experience that was the biggest bunch of wingnuts of ANY persuasion I'd ever seen!! There were more conspiracy theories floating about than the X-Files!

What are you smoking? There were more blacks at the Glen Beck Restoring Honor Rally that there was at the AL Sharpton rally. Did you see any video of the Restoring Honor Rally that any of the news(?) stations played? They all showed plenty of "African-Americans, Latinos and any other ethencity. This was Not a TEA PARTY Rally. It was for AMERICA! There were all religions there and not one nasty political remark or sign was displayed! The American Flag was held and displayed by everyone! Faith! Hope! Charity! those were the things that were discussed and also above all "GOD!" That why people went! They want America to become "one nation Under God" again! Restoring Honor! Millions were raised for the families of our wounded soldiers!

              God Bless America!

For the one asking when has Fox lied: This was about a year ago. I was watching the local news that had a clip of Obama where someone was asking him why do you hate Republicans. Obama responded I do not hate Republicans. Then I switched over to Fox who had the same clip but they edited the "NOT". So now Obama supposedly said I do hate Republicans. At that point Hannity asks his crew "Why does Obama hate Republicans".

Now I watch all the news programs - and Fox news was the only one that had edited that clip. Presenting false facts is lying. I could go on but all my notes are at home and I am at work. Yes I keep notes!

What a bunch of hateful people over @ Fox. To say nothing of how ignorant they are. We truly need to do something about our education in this country, because we're turning out some real losers.

One of the great things about reading nonfiction is not that you may agree or disagree with someone's point of view. Rather, you learn a great deal about their character. Most people from our past had a great deal of character. It was rare to meet someone who was ignorant. Very rare. They thought independently, most often because of their background and the way they grew up. Their parents and grandparents used to be their guiding light. Now it seems only money is.

It's a sad state of affairs when this is what we have become. And more sad that people just don't realize it or maybe just don't want to face it. There is nothing wrong with President Obama. Nothing. He is an awfully nice person, who worked hard his entire life. As did the First Lady.

We are divided only because the GOP want it that way. Nothing our president does will make them happy. And they will pay any price to see that our economy does not improve. It wasn't always that way in this country. There were a great number of Democrats who liked Bush, Sr., who liked Eisenhower and so on. President Nixon won a huge election in '72. Democrats voted for him.

We are divided because we have people in this country who are spoiled, self-centered and unable to come to terms with the decisions made in the Bush Administration. So they take all their anger and direct it at President Obama. They want him to be worse than GWB and Cheney. It will make them feel better.

For people not to see what a good person he is simply don't want to see it. You can disagree on some of his policies. Democrats do all the time. But they don't hate him, they don't wish him ill.

I would imagine that most of this hate is coming from the 50+ year olds. They should have received great educations when they were younger. What happened to them that they don't want to think for themselves? It used to be that 50+ year olds were wise, were kind. We used to love talking to them about their lives, their families from older generations.

These people I see at these rallies are uninteresting. But what I really see more than anything is selfishness.

Fox "news" put everything on the line in order to be the Bush Administration's mouthpiece. We know they received talking points from the Bush White House because the mainstream media used to receive the talking points occasionally as well - by accident. The GOP is good at talking points. But that's it. They can't do an honest day's work. They just look 24/7 for a target. For someone they can hate. I don't know how they can't stand looking in the mirror each day. Their hate was only for the terrorists. Now it's directed at President Obama and the American people instead of Bin Laden. Jim DeMint, Leader of the Pack.

Have you ever watched Fox News or just qoute what the other news channels tell you what Fox News says?

I watch CNN, MSNBC, Fox, and every other news show. Fox never said any that you give them credit for but through creative editing the other channels paint Fox worse. They might have insinuated some of the list. They might have asked the viewers if they thought what is on you list. But they never said it as a fact.

In fact, if I want news on cable, 75% of the content between 6 and 8 pm EST on Fox is as good and unbiased as any other news at that time I have ever watched. This is including broadcast news from the big 3 when national news was limited to a hour a night, 30 minutes each at 6 and 10. I also will tell you something else. I watch Hannity as much as I watch Olbermann. If you add the two together they might add up as much as I watch Nancy Grace.

There is Kool-Aid on all the channels for the mindless minions to drink up as if it was the last day on earth.

                Pat,

If I could vote 25 times, I couldn't agree with you more. I just kept scrolling down and down on this post trying to find someone, anyone, with some common decency.

It is sad that the people in this country are so hateful. If they are the vision of the Republican Party, it is quite obvious this country can do without all this hate. It is disgusting.

We are all entitled to our opinion and all entitled to express it. However, absolutely no one has license to attack others like rabid dogs.

There isn't a single person in this country who doesn't want our economy to turn around. What I do find pathetic is that there is so much hate and disrespect here. Not a single one of you can articulate what you feel can be done. All you say is get rid of our President. Well, face facts, WE elected this man to be OUR president. Fact, he is going to be our President until the next election. Fact, you hate mongers are making so much noise, you can't see how the majority of Americans are pretty close to puking every time you and the rest of the haters open your mouths.

You offer nothing positive, useful, sane. Just as the good Senators of the Republican group. All they say is they oppose anything that will do something for the people who trusted enough to put that dwindled down group of haters into office.

We have the opportunity to make a further change come Nov 2. We can eliminate even more of the obstructionists. They were all elected, Democrat, Republican, Independent, to represent us and do what is best for everyone in this country. Their focus is to obstruct anything OUR President tries to do. They are going to sit in Congress for another 2 years waiting for 2012? For the last 22 months, they have obstructed every initiative. They offer no alternative. Their only agenda is to undue everything that has been done.

Try something different instead of running your mouths off. Anyone have anything constructive to offer? Forget 2012. Everyone knows what the Republican party offers, nothing.

It is just sickening. Two years of this crap is way too long.

Watch the Univ of Michigan play football at home, when the overhead shows the folks in the stadium. That is 110,000 people. Beck's rally was estimated at 87,000? Was that the last I heard? (I say no way. They did not have that many, maybe 8,700.) See what 110,000 people in one place look like. Then you can determine an estimate. And a million you know would be ten times that many. The restoring sanity rally is for everyone, not just liberals, you know. Again, "lamestream" commentators do find misstatements, falsehoods, hate talk, and outright lies coming out of Fox, Beck, and Limbaugh. I am glad there is some sanity out there. What would this country be like if Fox was the only choice? If that were the case, you might start seeing rings in middle class noses with the big corporations leading them around like animals. What you all are really saying in your dissing of mainstream media is that you are NOT for their freedom of speech, just yours. Now, really, isn't that what you are saying?

They won't take the Park service's estimate (who have estimated these gatherings for both sides for years) and now they won't take a company that specializes in computer estimates from photo's an video. The last I heard FOX and Beck were bandying figures about at close to half a million being there. That's rich! I'll believe the same folks that did the other survey as being a close estimate of Jon's rally just as I do with Beck's.

Rush Limbaugh dominated the airways in the 90's. The liberals tried to countered with Ed Schultz and Air America. No contest. Fox was launched in 1996. Liberals countered the same year with MSNBC. No contest. Conservatives launched the Tea Party. The liberals countered with the Coffee Party. Haven't heard much from them. LOL. Glenn Beck launched "Restoring Honor" rally. The liberals counter with "Campaign to Restore Sanity" rally. It's true what they say. A copy is never as good as the original.

Good points, and herding democrats is like herding cats, as most people know.

However, I would easily bet that this campaign to "restore sanity" is going to far surpass the the "restoring honor" movement. Never bet against good comedy.

Fox was launched in 1996. Liberals countered the same year with MSNBC.

For the record, MSNBC launched July 15, 1996. FOX News lanched October 7, 1996. So, what, we hit back first?

Conservatives launched the Tea Party. The liberals countered with the Coffee Party. Haven't heard much from them.

Maybe it's because the Coffee Party folks aren't whacked out of their freakin' skulls showing up in costume threatening violence against our elected officials?

By the way, I thought the Tea Party was supposed to be a grass-roots organization made up of both Republicans and Democrats who are just fed up. Now you tell us it's all Conservatives? Gee...I'm shocked.

I do know here in Phoenix we had people attacking cops during the SB1070 stuff and CNN/MSNBC/NBC called those protests peaceful.

Unless you have been a victim of profiling you have little sympathy for those "liberals" who oppose SB1070. If a cop wants to "check you out" they will pull you over for NOT SIGNALING within 100 FEET of a LANE CHANGE.

When taking a left hand turn at an intersection, stay in the left lane do not veer into the right lane.

High School? If a demitrix-era bully tries to shake someone down for their lunch money nowadays they will be expelled and arrested for menacing. A coworker of mine has a 17 year old son that grabbed a girl's boob and now that kid is a registered sex offender.

I find it disturbing that Faux News actually funds the republican party (who didn't know that, though). Oh, and that idiot John Stossel, recently on Faux News, said that he couldn't understand (or perhaps didn't like) that the left was campaigning for the young vote. He then went on to say that young people don't know anything and, therefore, shouldn't vote. Sounds like he, and Faux News, are unsure of what a democracy actually is.

Regarding the latest and greatest medical bill (it's big!!): We pay a 3% tax when you sell your home 9gross sale price)-to go into the insurance pool and Muslims don't have to pay into the med insurance because it's against their religion!! Heard from a reliable source this is fact (please verify/prove me wrong!!) How's that for honesty/transperancy/sanity?? 3% on 200k is $6,000.00 you didn't know about!

                    It's actually a 3.8% tax.

It only kicks in if (a) the home is worth $500,000 or more, and (b) you didn't actually live there (e.g. it's an investment property). If you're rich enough to own a half-million dollar house you don't live in, I have trouble feeling sorry for you.

Tea Party Taking The Next Step

“We are setting the tone for taking back America with Liberty Concerts. We are not waiting until the first quarter of the year, we have already begun.” Dale Robertson, President and Founder of the Tea Party – TeaParty.org

‘Liberty Concerts’ is a venue designed to be the key to create a model for our Nation to Take Back America. The Tea Party does not intend to waste their time simply rallying. The Plan is to optimize the events, they will be fun and Citizens will be asked to run for office, with the focus of Restoring America, and thus, putting it on the Conservative track.

The goal is to shift attendees from being merely a presence at a rally, into involved Patriots recognizing the need to be engaged in the process of Self-Governance.

The Tea Party is gearing up for action. Robertson has a developing strategy to bring the Republic back under the control of ‘We The People.’ He is asking for thousands of Patriots across America, to run for office.

Robertson stated: “Even though the likelihood of their success is diminished by the lack of experience or financial support; the knowledge will be invaluable for the next election cycle and a point of pride for the American People.”

The Tea Party’s number one imperative, is to have candidates on the ballot. The second priority is to get out the vote, especially in Texas where Robertson lives and the home of over 800,000 members of the Tea Party……….

Robertson is molding the Tea Party events to empower Citizens so they will make a difference in the November 2010 elections. The ongoing tactics are to prioritize States, creating a durable model for ballot access, voter eligibility, precinct chair/county chairs, and candidate awareness. The Tea Party is actively seeking candidates that represent Conservative Constitutional Values. It appears the Major Parties can’t get in step with such a complex idea as Conservative Constitutional Values; therefore, the Tea Party will make it easy for the Independent Parties to break the glass ceiling and get on the ballot.

The ‘Liberty Concerts’ event taking place in Stafford, Texas is a developing prototype, which when successful, will allow the Tea Party to create a thriving event not in months but days. We will be quick on the draw, sure fired and ready to rock in a matter of only a few days. This Tea Party formula will work against incredible odds and will be nothing short of a miracle, but Robertson believes with all his heart all the pieces will fall into place.

Does the Tea Party really believe it can make a difference in November? “Some say, “talk is cheap” but 2 years ago when I started the modern day Tea Party no one believed it could work now 7 million strong, the world is listening and America is hoping, we will not fail.” Dale Robertson – TeaParty.org

                    http://washingtonindependent.com/73036/n-word-sign-dogs-would-be-tea-party-leader

They are also voter caging in Texas, that means the plan to knock minorites off the ballot like Katrine Harris did in Florida.

Houston, we have problem don't you think, Bri-1732738?

I think Obama has finally hit the heart beat of the American pulse. As the unwashed masses have listened to the pundits from left and the right bloviate from their pulpits of grandeur, most of us wanted just to have someone in power that understands us!

By endorsing a rally that is being lead by a psuedo news show anchor on the Comedy Channel, Obama has touched upon what the majority of Americans already knew:

Politics and our Government as it is in America is a joke.

Thanks Obama for finally finding the pulse of America!

I actually like this. I am a young person, and who do I get Stephen Colbert's sarcasm. I am amused by it AND it gets me knowledgeable at least of the overall issues. Jon Stewart's program, while funny, is still full of good facts and criticizes those purely making sh*t up to scare people into voting the way they want.

So all of you who are saying Obama and the Dems are being idiots, you obviously don't know how to get young Americans to pay attention. Can you find a better way to get young Americans (College, young professionals, etc) to watch a congressional hearing? I bet a lot of them have seen this Colbert thing though. And know about the Stewart rally.

Stop marketing to the old of this country. Try new things to change the political awareness of more people. Congrats to Obama in being able to relate to people under 40.

We have entered the 21st Century and the world has changed so much and so fast. Our Congress is made up of old, narrow minded men. They fear change because they know they can not relate.

I am well over 50 and they are even too stuck for me. It is time for the younger generation to step up. President Obama is definitely the best person to lead this march into the new century. I know I will always support the President and believe in his vision. You and the others will ensure his vision doesn't fail.

There isn't much time till Nov 2. Get the word out.

                    Think Progress:

Two weeks ago, vandals spraypainted the words “Worship Satan” and drew a pentagon along the side of the Masjid Qooba mosque in St. Louis. The FBI immediately began investigating the incident, but made no arrests.

Now, vandalism has once again befallen the mosque. The words “Worship Satan” were spray-painted over a different wall of the same mosque, alarming its worshippers. The FBI and St. Louis Police are both investigating the incident, and suspect the same vandals from the incident two weeks earlier may be responsible.

In an interview with local news station KMOV, mosque spokesman Tim Kaminski said the mosque is not interested in pursuing charges against the vandal or vandals. “What we would like is for this person to come forward and come clean,” said Kaminski. “We have no rancor, no anger. We want to talk to this person. Explain to them what Islam is, that we worship the same God as the Christian and Jewish traditions do.”

Jim Hacking, a local attorney for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, told local news station KMOX that right-wing figures have helped gin up the hatred against Muslims that is leading to vandalism. “Nationally on things like FOX News, you have people like Newt Gingrich comparing Muslims to Nazis,” Hacking said. “Just really negative, stereotypical hatred that’s been spewing out, and it’s really at its worst level, even worse than after 9/11.”

Remember when we were kids and we would go to Woolworths with our siblings, parents or friends? And there was always an older woman who worked there with an accent? She could have been from Germany, Italy, Russia or Poland. We didn't know and we didn't care. We were mesmerized by her kindness and her accent. We didn't ask that she speak English better, we didn't ask what, if any church she went to. We just wondered where she was from, and most importantly, what kind of life she had in some far off country. We never asked. Yet we always wondered. She was someone who always helped us kids, and we assumed she was probably someone's grandmother. There was something special about these women. And we always treated them with respect. Always.

I remember being in line at the airport in Berlin, about to fly home. And the security guard asked the young American woman in front of me to empty her pockets. The security guard spoke German, but certainly his words were pretty understandable. After all, we were at the airport. Yet the woman from America "demanded" that the security guard speak English. Yet here we were in Germany. I felt so bad for the security guard for being spoken to like that. I couldn't believe it. And I never forgot it.

And here is the old Pat, my friend, back again.I travel extensively in Europe-sadly, when wait staff, or hotel staff, spend a few minutes with my husband and me, they ask if we are 'North Americans". That is a compliment across the pond-as opposed to Americans.

They are unused to Americans with manners.

It's sad, really. "Please", "thank you", "excuse me", seem to be lacking in most of our citizens.

I'll tell you a funny story: my husband speaks fluent German-I do not. About ten years ago, we were in Germany, and he 'taught'me what to say to shopkeepers while he was on business. That evening, he asked me how I had done, and I told him, splendidly; although the village we were in did not boast many English speakers, I had made myself understood easily.

Then, he asked me what I had said to start the conversation.

"Bitte Shoen, ich sprechen zie nicht Doech-sprechen zie Englese?" I responded. My husband fell down laughing-tears streaming down his face. What you said, he told me, was "You're welcome. You and I don't speak German, do you speak English".

I guess it was the 'you're welcome' that made people so friendly to someone who so obviously did not speak German.

Wait...didn't you get caught yesterday NJ quoting an email that simply wasn't true? Did you ever own up to that, or are you pretending that it didn't happen? Now, I realize that you like to pretend that you are the only person who has ever done anything, but having frequented Europe myself, and having children that are there frequently, family still in Ireland, and a daughter who lived in both Ireland and Italy, I can safely say that you are not the ONLY person in the world that has ever said "please" or "thank you" in a foreign country. And, of course, there are those of us who are familiar with Germany who know that there are plenty of shopkeepers who speak English, and who probably laughed at your pretend German. Really, NJ, I do understand that you have to boost your esteem with these kinds of pretenses, but honestly, sweetie, you bore the life out of me. You owe both Pat and Paul and apology, and one who brags of manners the way that you do will recognize the truth of that.

um, newday? I don't quote e-mails. Why? Because I don't trust the source.

so, actually, I have no idea what the heck you are talking about.

I told a joke on myself-it is called 'self-deprecating humor', and is a sign of maturity.

What is wrong with you people?  There are more stupid posts on this site than I have ever seen.  Let's start at the beginning:

Obama is trying.  He is also a really smart guy.  I am surprised and disappointed that he goes toward the center on some issues.  He seems to be afraid of the conservative reaction to things, and tries to avoid getting them excited.

This is probably because the conservative reaction is always emotional.  They figured out how to get people involved in politics.  Every decision is personal.  It is also a way to blur the facts of an issue.  The tea baggers are so emotional that they don't even know what they're talking about.

Fox News is a racist, conservative propaganda machine.  That is simply a fact.  It is the big TV in the book 1984 that spews "Facts" about the government all day long.   I don't think Roger Ailes even believes all the stuff they broadcast.  It is kind of like he is just proving a point.  Every one remembers Fox in it infancy, and watched "A Current Affair," with Maury.  The whole network is just a big extension of that.  A conservative, racist, tabloid.  Why pay a dollar for the National Enquire when you can watch it for free?  What is bad is that this nonsense is mainstream.  I also think it is funny that when they are questioned on their journalism, they just talk about the wonderful ratings they have.  Ten billion flies all agree!  Poop tastes good!

In the end, Fox is laughing all the way to the bank.  Just don't watch it.  Grow up.  Go outside and spend some time with your kids.

Watch the movie OutFoxed on the internet.  They  interviewed people from the inside who really knew how things worked.  If you don't see it as the truth, you are really an idiot.  (The whole premise of finding a weak, soft spoken liberal, and letting two experienced conservatives beat up on him was literally policy.  If you were too good and explaining a liberal position, you didn't get invited back.)

The conservatives are trying to figure out how to get the tea baggers to like them without having to actually agree with their nonsense.  I swear, our country is getting dumber every day.

It is Dr. Rachel Maddow, by the way.  She is actually quite well educated.

Hey, Mark? Obama may be 'trying'-but, in the real world, outside of school, that is not enough.

                              You have to succeed.

It is for that very reason that I always say that he is out of his element. He needs to go back to academia-where trying is enough.

                              You make a good point.

He's the President. He will be for another 2 years. If the majority of the people don't like his leadership, he won't be the president anymore.

If he were successful, would you be really disappointed with that? Just because you didn't agree with the policies?

He's a person, just like everyone else. I hope he has learned something from his mistakes. Perhaps he'll have some better ideas. There really isn't a president school you can attend. Unfortunately, it's on the job training. I thought GWB was completely incompetent. Very unpresidential.

I'm sure trying isn't enough if you're a constitutional law professor at University of Chicago either.

Mark, if your definition of success is that the economy is growing, the unemployment rate is shrinking, and international threats are contained, then, yes, I'd be grateful that Obama is succeeding.

He is not. His attitude about how to achieve the above success was doomed to fail.

I did not vote for Bill Clinton first time out-I thought that we were on the verge of lasting peace in the Middle East, thanks to GHWBush's leadership, and did not want to rock the boat. Thanks to that nut from Texas, that opportunity was lost.

I did not vote for Bob Dole, nor did I vote for the nut from Texas, the next time out-I went for Clinton, who showed that he could learn on the job. For six years, he was a darned good president. You can ask Fiesty, and Bev, or any of the regular "left" posters on the board about my feelings about bringing up politician's personal lives-suffice to say, I don't want to know, and I wish that the press would not feel compelled to tell me about it. And, no, I don't buy the line that "if he/she lies to his/her spouse, he will lie to me"-we have a different relationship. I keep reminding people that JFK was not, exactly, a monk. Nor was FDR. I do not care.

I don't think Obama is capable of learning on the job-so far, he has shown absolutely no propensity for it.

I hope I am wrong. There is a lot at stake. A nuclear Iran changes everything. Everything. And, Obama's self evaluation notwithstanding, Iran is not impressed.

                              Prince,

Just because the conservatives are going to win a few seats doesn't make them right. Their platforms are just more popular.

I am disappointed at the liberal performance too. Both sides are too involved in posturing instead of actual problem solving.

My opinions on politics are sometimes so complicated that I can't articulate them well myself. (My opinion on Fox News is pretty strong and easy to understand though.) I'll really not the die hard liberal you might think. MSNBC has it's own troubles too.

However, when investors and big earners are given more of the resources, it doesn't create economic growth. I think GWB proved that. We don't actually make anything in America anymore. Labor is too expensive. But if someone were going to work in manufacturing, you'd have to make a living. It should pay enough to raise a family and have insurance...

My Dad claims that most talk of money on a national scale is mostly fictional. There is always funding for things those in power want. I don't think the conservatives were concerned at all with the deficit when they were in power. They literally wasted trillions in Iraq. All the unfinished project they left is really terrible. They just don't want spending on social programs.

After all these years, it just comes down to guns and butter...Unfortunately, I don't think the return for starting wars is very good, and I don't think big social programs are effective either.

I wondered what the benefit would be if the Federal Government just gave 10% right back to the communities. Not even States, but cities, townships and local municipalities. My small town can't afford a badly needed traffic light. One plane can cost A Billion Dollars. See what I mean about fictional money?

It just doesn't seem right. If we had some of that money right here, now, I think things would be better for many people.

As I look around the room I'm in, I think that most of this stuff wasn't made in America.

                              Rome didn't last forever either...

Mark, I'm assuming you're young. I felt the way that you did when Jimmy Carter gave his 'national malaise' speech. Yes, I know, he never said those words. The meaning was clear, though. I turned to my husband after he said something to the effect that 'the best days are behind us, but America is still America, and we will be together through the bad days to come" (not a quote, but a summation)-and said, "that's it? We don't get a chance?"

It bears remembering, Mark, that Obama never MADE professor at U of C-despite getting three bites at the apple-two more than every other candidate. He would not do the work necessary. Publish or perish-he would not publish-never wrote the book on race relations he was supposed to write. Five years late "Dreams of my Father" was written; NOT a book on race relations, but a book on himself.

That should tell you a lot.

                              No Jo,

GHWB was a much more capable leader that his son. I always wonder if he stayed out of things because he was embarrassed. I read that there is a kind of code that all the former presidents have. Even though you belong to a party, you are supposed to govern like a true leader, who respects and represents the real and important needs of everyone.

I'm going to have to agree with your assessment of Obama too. I hope he gets some things right. We're waiting.

I mentioned in my post to Greek that I'm not the great liberal either. We are presently trying out the idea that schools need lots of testing (instead of teaching) and many regulations. We may just be a front for the logging/paper industry. It isn't working too well.

You are also correct in mentioning that the road ahead is really tough. God help us all.

Mark, I'm happy that my assessment of you, from reading your posts, was right. It's great to have a reasonable person on board.

I'm a former teacher myself. I left the classroom when I had earned enough to continue my education-went back for a master's and PhD in economics-but I loved teaching.

I loved the kids, that is. The parents? yes, some. The administators? few. My fellow teachers? Not so many. The union? NOT AT ALL.

The restrictions they put on me and the time I had to spend with my kids, was ridiculous. God bless you for being motivated to go on despite them. Two hundred and ten minutes of 'face time'-three and a half hours out of a six hour day, which included lunch and recess duty-was not what I signed up for when I became a teacher. I wanted to teach, and the union precluded me. I got to teach two hours a day-the rest of the time I spent in endless, useless meetings and 'planning sessions'. I only hope your experience is better than mine.

Don't lose your enthusiasm. Remember, if we don't motivate them, they don't get motivated. Don't lose your edge-innovate. If you're bored, the kids are bored-so change things up.

Stay involved, and stay on the board when you can. You have a voice. A welcome one.

Today Obama was answering questions for the people, CNN and MSNBC was showing it, Fox didn't. How do you know what Obama was talking about if Fox only shows bits? I was just wondering, can some Republican guy explain it to me? There were so many questions from regular people, none of that made to the Fox News. Don't you guys ever question that organization of so called "News" Are you blindly trusting them because they say what you want to hear?

Emma, who the heck cares what new lies Obama is spewing? Not me. I turn the station when he comes on. I find him to be disgusting and revolting.

But I doubt that you would have changed the channel from FOX when GWB was spewing his crap and blowing our economy to bits!

I didn't thing we'd see the day when the most honest news comes from a comedian. But it's true. Jon Stewart nails it. Their may be a few good Congressmen in the GOP but they are terrified to death about stepping out of line. And the line is set by the corporations. The Tea Party is an extreme extension of the GOP, willing to vote against their own best interests. Fueled by fear, anger, homophobia, lies and their brand of religion. Flames fanned courtesy of Glen Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, Sarah Palin.

EricSimon, you are right. We are mad as hell and are not going to take your progressive BS any more. This administration hasbankrupted the country and attempted to turn the country to socialism. They have embarrassed themselves and the nation by bowing to foreign leaders. They have apologized for the success of the country in fighting tyranny around the world. They have coddled Islam and aided terrorists through their words and actions. They have done everything they could to destroy the economy and control every aspect of our lives. That is why we are mad as hell.

Nora, I agree. When you look at the policies of this administration they would be objectively classified as centrist. Certainly not socialist. Obama is a clear pragmatist that strives (sometimes to his demise) to make progress on a huge range of structural issues existant in this society. Many of these issues have nothing to do with a socialist/progressive agenda. He's doing this in a tattered economy that he had nothing to do with creating. The 'bankrupting' of this country has very little to do with him. It comes from long history of not aligning revenues to expenses; funding wars on credit, poorly timed tax cuts, lack of financial system oversight.

Poorly timed tax cuts ?? what are you nuts ??

Think of this , If state, Local & Federal goverments were taking about 50% less than their taking now out of everyone's pockets people might could afford a few more thing that might give them and their familes a better life.

                                Better life ??

Just maybe if they were taking less in taxes 20% of familes where both Husband & wife work would have a new option that they don't have now.

                                What option ??

Maybe the wife or husband could stay home and raise the kid's .

                                Why ??

Why not, the kids would be the winners their with a parent to take them to school , pick them up , work on home work... You Know... like it use to be...

Like it use to be ??

Yes, before we all were paying 50% of everything we make in taxes to State, Local, & federal .. and let's not forget all the fee's these days...

                                Fee's.. ??

Like paying for trash bags & dump stickers, drivers licence fee's thast keep on going up & up. and so on..

                                Could it work ???

                                Why not................................

                                How ??????????????????????

                                TEA PARTY !!

Vote people into office who understand what we all want and if washington changes them , vote them out next time around.

Who do we vote for ????????

Vote for the ones who want to down size goverment and take less of our money.

We all know goverment could run better and cost less.

Get it done and get out and vote with us....

                                Vote for who ???

                                Democrate or Republican ???

I really don't care who you vote for, just make sure they understand what we want and what we demand.

What if they say they understand , get into office and change their ways ???

Then we'll vote them out next time around, won't we.

Listen to the conservative GOP teabaggers all hot about Stewart and Colbert, two commedians. Yet, believing every bit of BS spewed by Beck, Hannity, and Limbaugh, the people who have repeatedly said they are merely entertainers. Well, if believing their BS is your idea of entertainment, you've found your format, so go drown yourself in it, but don't be hypocrites. The difference between Beck and Stewart is that Stewart's audience knows he's a commedian.

So, conservative GOP teabaggers hypocrites, stuff your fake outrage where the sun don't shine.

Amen brother. They're all comedians. But with Stewart and Colbert you can actually have a laugh instead of getting your blood boiling (over nothing).
