Whitman camp addresses former housekeeper's allegations

From NBC's Mark Murray and Sarah Ford
California gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman's campaign is responding to accusations that she subjected to "emotional and financial abuse" her former housekeeper, who was working illegally in the country.

Nicky Diaz, who was Whitman's housekeeper from 2000-2009, claimed in a press conference alongside attorney Gloria Allred that Whitman was aware that she was undocumented and that the Republican candidate fired her only after deciding to run for governor. Diaz also said Whitman failed to pay her on time and did not offer her medical leave during her pregnancy.

Allred said that Whitman ignored a 2003 letter from the Social Security Administration notifying her of discrepancies in the Social Security number that Diaz provided.

Whitman, who has poured millions of her own money into the close race against Democrat former Gov. Jerry Brown, flatly said in a statement that “the charges are without merit.”

Whitman's campaign held a conference call with reporters - though not allowing follow-up questions – before the press conference to address the allegations.

On June 20, 2009, the campaign said, Diaz came to Whitman and confessed that she was not a legal resident of the U.S. and filed false documents. She was then fired by Whitman.

“As required by law, once we learned she was an illegal worker, I immediately terminated Nicky's employment,” Whitman said in a written statement.”It was one of the hardest things I've ever done. I considered Nicky a friend and a part of our extended family.”

The campaign also argued that Allred had given Jerry Brown campaigns contributions in 1982 ($1,000) and in 2006 ($150), and said the timing of this complaint -- 34 days until the election -- was curious.

“I believe Nicky is being manipulated by Gloria Allred for political and financial purposes during the last few weeks of a hotly contested election," the statement read.

*** UPDATE *** A CNN/Time/Opinion Research Corporation poll released Wednesday showed Whitman trailing Brown 52 percent to 43 percent.

OK, so Meg was wrong and there is no excuse. My other question is why didn't she report this illegal with forged documents to the I.N.S. back in June of 09 like the law requires?

Anyone?

But for the rest of us or the US as a whole, it’s not to hard to see through the hypocrisy of this internet queen now turned want Abe Governor, she simply says one thing, and does what ever she wants

not only did meg use an employment agency, so do all the big farmers. These agency or contractors sheild the employer from the law. the contractor is paid one lump sum and then they pay the workers and the state employment tax after they skim a little.

an employment agency is not a contractor and meg has the employment tax DID SHE????

no it was about future dreams about technology which would give a faster response time to state disasters. Which were thought to be redickuless when he made the proposal in 1979. BTW they came true. that technology is now in everyday use

We sure could end the illegal immigration problem by fining employers $25,000 for every illegal hired.

Then bar illegals from having their kids enrolled in public schools.

No jobs, no education, no illegal immigration problem...

As for Meg's run for Govenor, California is a State not a business.

She is "polished" and knowledgeable. So what! Do the people of California want a politician that actually did good for their state or do they want a proven corporate job killer. Sure she made jobs for a few of her employees that STILL HAVE A JOB after e-bay downsizing, but she has and does subscribe to the corporate philosophy of fire people when profit doesn't meet their expectations. She would be disastrous for California and it's people. California right now is plagued by problems that will not just go away because some people "say it will if she is elected. You better smarten up, put the lies being shouted from the roof tops where they belong IN THE TOILET!

I may just end up moving to Canada. I don't think I can handle the political mess that is California and the US anymore. Democrats have blown it, and the Republicans who blew it in the first place want to do the same stuff again. I wish all the lefties and all the righties would all just go away and make room for the reasonable people in the middle who look at all the merits of each argument and don't just vote party line. It scares me to think that anyone would have strong feelings in favor of either of these candidates, and the thought that some on here have strong feelings in favor of Palin makes me want to move further away than Canada! Maybe Russia so she can see me...although I'm sure the grass is greener...

I've voted Democrat in California since I turned 18 WAY BACK in 1980. If Jerry Brown is the best choice that the party could come up with, then woe be to us. He was ineffectual in Oakland (obviously) and the track record as "moonbeam" fared little better.

Sorry to say that I'd still take Meg despite these recent, and very curiously timed, allegations

Just another example-one of many, of Republicans talking out of both sides of their mouth. She was for amnesty...now she's not. It's ok to employ illegal aliens...until you run for Gov. The timing of this lawsuit is "suspicious"? So is the timing of the maid's firing. So...we should be suspicious of Jerry Brown, but not supicious of Meg Whitman...is that what her campaign spokes people are saying? Right....

By then I'd had enough of cali and left..It is now the most debt ridden state in the union, with taxes out of control...no wonder people and business are leaving. Sorry to see it but the politicians brought down the house.

I was here in California the last time Brown was governor. Not only is he in the pockets of the Unions and all state employees, his talking point about fiscal conservacy when he was in office was only due to the fact that he was an out-and-out hippy and lived off his folks. The worst part is what he did to our judicial system with Rosie and the supremes. He screwed up so many criminal cases it wasn't funny. Back then he'd be a big fan of people like Gardner who killed those girls in Southern California. Moon Beam Jerry was the politest thing you could call him. Unfortunately there's a lot of voters here in California that aren't old enough to know the real guy and will vote for him simply because he's a Democrat. No, the choice isn't great, but nowadays in politics it's the lesser of two evils, and I know what a sad choice Brown was and would be again.
