Subscribe to RSS Louisiana Sen. David Vitter’s Democratic challenger is reminding voters of the Republican lawmaker’s 2007 prostitution scandal in a new 2-minute mini-documentary ad.
The campaign of Rep. Charlie Melancon, who has trailed the incumbent Republican by double digits in recent polls, is airing an abridged version of a five-minute web video - released earlier this summer by the Louisiana Democratic Party – that includes a reenactment of Vitter’s encounter with a New Orleans prostitute. The 2-minute excerpt samples the most vivid parts of the longer production, including audiotape of a former prostitute detailing her sexual relationship with Vitter. The ad is expected to begin running on cable stations in the state.
NBC News rates this race “Lean Republican.”

A poor last, ditch effort by Charlie Melancon. He's down 14 points with 4 weeks to go. Not looking good for Charlie, not at all. Charlie is just a wannabe. I'm in Charalie's district. He has the mark of the "D" beside his name on a ballot. He's not getting my vote.

Marie, you are right. Harry didn't break the law by using hundreds of millions of tax payer dollars to buy Mary Landreau's vote for Obama care. He just used our tax dollars to bribe an official so she can get political points in her state for her next re election bid. But, it was all legal.

How do the "family values" people rationalize their support for candidates like Vitter who behave the way that they do? I am really interested in hearing from some of you! Apparently, it is enough that he lectures others in his arrogant way, but he is exempt from following the rules that he sets for others? Gingrinch too. He has morphed into a Catholic, which claims to have rules about divorced people, but they turn a blind eye to Newt and his history as a divorced man who cannot be faithful to his vows? All of this does not exist as long as they look pontificate about the virtues of family life? I will be interested to read what some of you have to say about this. They will ignore any all evidence of their own immorality because it would kill them to actually take a look at their own hyprcrisy. "Do as I say, not as I do" is the Repub matra for decades and when this is brought to light, they do a Falwell and pretend to repent and ask forgiveness. They think that by doing this, its absolves them and history is wiped clean. Vitter will get voted in because unfortunately, the people in Louisiana are basically in shock because of Katrina and the spill. They can't really take anymore and need some sense of normalcy and unfortunately, that means putting Vitter back in w/ all of his hyprocisy.

Well, here's the thing...LA'ers may not like Vitter because of his scandals, but maybe they don't like his opponent even more.
In other words, reasonable Republicans in Louisiana are too lazy and apathetic to get out and support a better Republican candidate during primary season.

Republicans love to point out the faults of others but take no responsibility for their own. Their convenient amnesia is stunning. Oh the hypocrisy. They love to tell others how to live their lives yet have no problem frequenting ladies of the evening. Or better yet, denouncing same sex relationships while they quietly have their own.
Normally I am no fan of attack ads, on either side, but with the convenient amnesia of the Republicans, sometimes you have to fight fire with fire.
It is about time voters are reminded of just what David Vitter represents. He represents the party of "Family Values" yet has no regard for his own family's values. Louisiana, time to vote for someone else and show Vitter to the door.
The only 'family values' the right holds has the words "In God We Trust" printed on 'em. And some numbers. The bigger the numbers, the more 'value' they hold for them.

Vitter's policy-relevant hypocrisy is even worse than his "family values" hypocrisy. The guy wants tort reform so that frivolous lawsuits aren't filed, but then encourages people to file birther lawsuits against the federal government. He goes on and on about states' rights, but then says that state's shouldn't be able to determine whether they give funding for higher education to non-citizens. He went right along with the "death panels" BS. He said that members of Congress should be treated like everyone else by the health care bill, but then offered a resolution to require than members of Congress be treated unlike ANYONE else by the health care bill. Vitter is a pandering jerk who thrives on the ignorance of many of his supporters.
m gear - I totally understand the policy-relevant hypocrsy of the republicans, i serve on my county's election commission. When the repugnants came into power two years ago they became the majority in each county's election commission, they promptly fired the election administratior (without just cause) because she was not an active republican (I have no idea which party she voted for and she was very equal in her dealings with all). they got afraid of their action, hired an attorney (yep that ugly lawyer word) in case they got sued - which they did not (instead the former election administrator ran for a countywide office and won by a landslide - quite an angry vote). Now they want the taxpayers of my county to pay for that attorney who was hired to protect the 3 repugnants on the commission. Now that's real conservative spending right there isn't it? Hypocrite - thy name is repugnant!
Well I do understand when Mr. Vitter was in the state legislature,he was known as "Bitter Vitter". Too bad he didn't react the same way toward his own moral failings as he did to President Clinton for his immoral ways. Hyprocasy runs amok in LA. Hey- speaking of funnty stuff- who all saw O'Donnell (Lawrence, not ding-dong) interview Levi Johnson yesterday? I can't imagine how Larry was able to keep a straight face the whole time. Poor Levi had no clue he was being the poster child for clueless! He didn't do too much worse than Sarah with all the same questions, though.

Internal polling by Dems has Vitter up by only single digits. The ads are having an impact, especially with women voters. Expect this race to tighten in the coming weeks.

during the oil crisis all we heard about was the integrity of the people of Louisiana. Now that matters have subsided ,the real people of louisiana show up. Their senator is a whoremonger and that is ok, the governor is two faced until he needs help.the voters show their respectability and good taste by voting for this type of garbage,until the next storm or crisis comes about and they are all goody two shoes again. Get some honesty and integrity and use common sense of good citizens not followers of good times only. Get some class and respect.

I thought it was a great ad. What's even more amusing are the responses on this forum of the conservative GOP teabaggers trying to defend him. If I were Charlie, I'd have photo-shopped a picture of Senator Vitter in his fetish diapers to give the voters an image of what a deviant senator really looks like to take the polls in November.
Not that it would matter, though. The lack of morals among the conservative GOP teabaggers is already well known. They'd vote for Vitter if it came out he was in league with Al Quida. Republicans have lost their compass. They are in 'win at all costs' mode. However, In November I'm voting straight Democratic because in the last 10 years, I've simply come to hate them and all that they actually stand for.
