We are coming into the 3rd turn before Election Day and before we know it we’ll be on the home stretch…

And what EVERY single voter should be focusing on is Getting Out the Vote!

Contrary to the popular belief of the pundits and right wingers this is NOT over by a LONG SHOT!

All this chest pounding and false bravado about a LANDSLIDE says ONE THING and that is the righties are frightened… they want YOU to BELIEVE your VOTE doesn’t COUNT!

It’s up to us the voters, to show the MSM that we ELECT our Representatives not the Koch Brothers – Rupert Murdoch OR the MSM…

Question to the Independents & Undecided voters… how many more outrageous things do these tea baggers have to do & say before YOU say ENOUGH?

Remind your family – friends & neighbors that they MUST vote like they’re lives depend on it because if we give the keys back to the ‘drunk drivers’ in the Party of NO they very well may!

Mark – Domenico & Ali: Extra special thanks for all the time & hard work you put into keeping First Read thee place to come for political discourse!

Hey Bev: Are you interested in going to Madison, WI next Thursday to see President Obama? I’m car pooling and if you want to go… drop me an e-mail via Newsvine. Or anyone else in the area for that matter I still have a couple of seats available!

I’m gonna head on over to the Dew Drop Inn… got a pocket full of quarters for the old jukebox tonight… for some reason I’m in the mood for ‘Jail House Rock’… lmao

Who’s buying?

Too funy you should mention Jailhouse Rock.

While reading your post about getting out the vote, I had this immage of the Blues Brothers pop into my head, going down the street with that huge car-mounted megaphone telling everyone to get on over to lake Wazzapumanti (or whatever it was called)....

I can see 'em now, telling everyone to get their lazy butts to the polls!

Feisty, did I miss something? Were you on probation here? If so, I missed it. I haven't had my correct reading glasses this week (I still don't have them) so it's been hard for me to keep up. I can barely read or type anything. Everything is kind of blurry. My eyes are so bad w/o proper reading glasses. What happened? Can you say?

      Hi Pat,

I was suspended for the day by Tyler for a post where I referenced the 'stuck on stupid crowd'... somehow that was a personal attack and violation of COH rule #1! lol

As I reminded someone then... this is a political blog... NOT Sunday school... if you can't handle it... well either grow some thicker skin or look elsewhere...

Just be careful Feisty. Honestly. The best thing to do is to ignore some people. Just let it go. Or try not to smear. I know I have to at times delete things I've written after careful study. It's hard for both sides to keep it civil. Very hard, especially during campaign season. But it's just a blog. We're not going to change anything with them. And they will never change our minds. It's not worth getting suspended over.

      Glad you're back.

John, I call them "Tea Baggers". Isn't that their name? If you find this disrespectful, I am sorry. After the signs that they were parading around at their rallies, the last thing they deserve is respect.

In any case, I honestly thought they called themselves "Tea Baggers". Where did this name come from, if not from them?

      #1.8 - Fri Sep 24, 2010 6:20 PM EDT

Pat: The genesis of the name was from the "tea baggers" themselves. If you remember, they thought it clever to send tea bags to Congress, hence the name. I posted earlier on why I refuse to give them the honorific "Tea Party". Suffice it to say that name belongs to the heroes of the Revolutionary War, not this group of thugs.

Thanks for the response. That's exactly how I remember it. They had tea bags hanging from the hats. Have they stopped all that I wonder. It won't make a difference to me either way. Not after what I saw from them. So hard to believe Americans would stoop to that level.

      Thanks Pat!

I had an V E R Y interesting encounter on my way home from the office that is share 'worthy'..

It's a beautiful fall day and not to mention quitting time on Friday. So I'm driving home with my window down listening to Ed Shultz talk about the violence that is erupting as the election grows closer...

I hear a whistle... and I look over thinking my tire is going flat or I had left my fuel cap open but NOOOO... it turns out to be two skin-heads holding up a tea bagger flier... you all know the one of President Obama depicted as Hitler... screaming at me that Obama SUCKS! Obviously they took umbrage with my 'Women for Obama 08' bumper sticker...

So I felt compelled to tell them that they NO doubt have more hair on their a@@ than on their heads and what REALLY SUCKS for them is having a black President!

Those tea baggers... real classy bunch aren't they? Two white trash racists trying to intimidate a woman all alone...

Hope that answer your question John....

I am looking for a ride to the Oct 2 rally, anyone from KC area? Glad some of the real interests of Freedom Works and AFP are getting out. The wealthiest men in the country hiding behind shell corporations trying to tear down the protections we are being given back. Next week the Senate will take up a bill to repeal tax loopholes on corporations shipping jobs overseas and give those credits to business here. That should lower our tax rate by 10% just by people paying what they should. Those crying about tax cuts for the rich should understand manipulation of the tax code allows the wealthiest like the KOCH brothers to file as a small business. It is a very perverted system that favors wealth. The top 8% of wealthy control 84% of all wealth in USA.

Have you noticed a lot of polls are pretty close now. We have to get out the vote. What I can't ever get an answer to what they will cut of SUBSTANCE. Tea Party Republicans want to privatise social security which is 80% supported by ALL Americans and can be fixed by raising the FICA cap. Medicare anyone? Military? WHAT and WHO will suffer? What hit are people willing to take. Sure we have to do things to fix our structural problems and they can be done. How can anyone justify giving the top 2% of the very wealth billionaires who have tons of money. There has been a worldwide almost depression and US is doing better than most. Anyway I never get an answer about what people will do that will hurt them. Women should be aware as we are the most vulnerable.

      Cheriejae,

You are correct in stating there has been a severe recession worldwide. However, this is one of the first times in history the U.S. is recovering more slowly than most. We are behind in our recovery versus the rest of the world (ex- Greece, Portugal). Why is this? Because other countries have been lowering taxes and cutting spending. We have not adopted those policies as of yet. We are doing the reverse.

Regarding the top 2% - you refer to billionaires. President Obama, and a decreasing number of Democrats, are not suggesting raising taxes on billionaires. He and they want to raise taxes on families making $250,000 or more. If a family makes $250,000 a year that doesn't mean they are billionaires.

No one is suggesting privatizing social security. The Republicans are suggesting allowing younger folks have the ability to choose to invest and take ownership of their own money within the context of defined rules. If you simply raise the FICA cap, more money would flow into the system. However those who contribute the increased funds will be entitled to that much more money at retirement. Otherwise, it would be a redistribution of wealth. This is the reason the "raising the cap" solution has been thought of but never implemented.

As to what the Republicans are suggesting be cut, I believe Paul Ryan has targeted specific items. Check out his web site. His writings go on quite a bit, but if you can get through it, there's a lot of specifics there.

Another week of rousing discourse - among friends and foes. I guess as we get closer to the election, things will get even more frantic on the board. Thanks, First Read, for giving us this forum.

My news for the week-no it isn't political, but personal:

Hear ye, Hear ye-we are celebrating the first anniversary of the birth of the pretty princess! In true, royal fashion, there will be three celebrations of the great event: one for extended families, one for parents and princess, and one, major blow-out for friends near and far.

A year ago, it didn't look like we would ever be having these parties. Let me, again, express my most humble thanks to all on this board who kept her in your thoughts and prayers. That weak, failing newborn is robust and thriving. She's not one hundred per cent out of the woods, but with the way we've been able to put off the most major surgery, anything is possible.

So, again, let me express my thanks for the expressions of caring, and frequent inquiries. I am truly humbled by it, and I'd be more eloquent if I weren't crying right now.

      Bless you all.

      It's Friday!

As we all look toward the final weeks of the 2010 midterms, we look as well to the final week of the 2010 MLB Regular Baseball Season. On this date in history - September 24, 1957

Throughout sports there are certain franchises that have storied histories that will never be forgotten. Located in Brooklyn, the Dodgers and their ballpark for over four decades Ebbets Field will never be forgotten in sports history as it is remembered as one of the most nostalgic stadiums ever built.

Disagreement between Moses and the Dodgers led O’Malley to make threats that the New York Giants and Dodgers may move to California. The team moved seven home games in 1956 and 1957 to Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City, NJ as part of its negotiating tactics against the city. In 1956, the demise of Ebbets Field began when a real estate developer bought the ballpark. By then it became known that the Giants and Dodgers were going to move to the west coast. The Dodgers played their last game at Ebbets Field on September 24, 1957. Demolition on Ebbets Field began on February 23, 1960. After demolition, the scoreboard and lights from Ebbets Field were used at minor league parks. The flag pole located in center field was donated to a company in Flatlands, NY. A church was constructed at this location in 2007 and the whereabouts of the flagpoles are unknown. Today the Ebbets Field apartments stand where this once great ballpark was located. A plaque commemorates the ballpark's existence at the site. The cornerstone of Ebbets Field can be found at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.

Evidently there is going to be a tough article in the NYT on Sunday re: John Boehner. Have no idea of bad it's going to be. Please remember everyone - especially GOP supporters - that there are so many stories that make the rounds that aren't true. We've seen it happen to President Obama over and over and over. He's a Muslim, he was born in Africa, he's anti-American, etc. It's never respectful to do this to anyone.

John Boehner is just the latest to get this treatment. It shouldn't happen to anyone. And the word is the GOP are behind this smear. Here's hoping it's not true.

We'll see what comes of this. I don't particularly trust the NYT any longer. And it's hard to say who is behind this. I'm so so so tired of reading things that aren't true. John Boehner as far as I am concerned will make a terrible Speaker of the House. He has voted against any and everything that will benefit us. And for that, I dislike him. But let's hope there's whatever the story is, it's not made of rumor. We by now should have had enough of that nonsense. They seem to take on a life of their own. Enough. No matter who it is. I just wish GOP supporters would say the same when they hear the racist nonsense directed at President Obama.

I’m not exhausted defending President Obama, Pelosi or the Democrats. I’m REVITALIZED (And so should every America that truly wants our country back) why because of the trillions of dollars the riches people in the WORLD, not all Americans put people from outside the country that has placed into this country to bring President Obama down. We most stop the *rape of the American people and turning this country into a third world country where only the rich have and other have not. How many more tent cities have been popping up more and more around America come on people wake up President Obama is trying to change this with no help at all from the opposing sides, I say sides because it is not just the Republicans but the foreign influence.

*Rape definition (other then the envious) is rape the land for its resources, the violent, destructive, or abusive treatment of something. (Jobs, Financially, economics etc.)

Now doesn’t this seem like what has happen and is happening and will continue to happen if it is not stopped?

People think of a country’s resources as oil, coal, gold etc, put it is much much more than just that.

Every one in this country, no matter what side you are on or who you are for or against should fight to regain the common practice of working towards a better America for the people.

Every news show should have one segment, where one democratic and one republican agree on the same issue.

Ranmarie... We're in trouble in this country with the Supreme Court ruling that let's anyone finance a campaign without acknowledging it. We'll see if the rich can really 'buy' the elections this November... It's frightening...

On the bright side... If money does control this election, there will be lots more of 'US' than of 'THEM', and our votes can once again 'vote the bums out' next time... I can only hope people see how they are being led by people who do NOT have their best interests at heart... I believe history shows that Rome burned when there were more of US than THEM....

Democrat voters recognize that the majority of people who campaigned against Obama during the last general elections became very bitter against him because he won the elections against their expectations. Many of them including some well known republican leaders publicly declared that they will never recognize him as their president and would wish him to fail. It is the first time in the history of America that some people have openly declared that they are not recognizing the duly elected United States of America’s president as being the president of the country.

Some radio and TV channels that were against this president even before he was elected have continued to actively campaign against every good thing that he and the Democrats leadership are doing to help the people of this country recover from the great recession and to rescue the economy. They directly and publicly throw insults at this president 24 hours a day and seven days a week with an intention of making him become less popular among the voters.

Democrat voters are aware that all these propaganda and insults and jealousy directed at the president all began during the campaign time and have continued non stop. The radio talk show hosts and Fox news have been preaching their sermons every day from morning to night with the theme or topic of their sermons being OBAMA. This has become very boring to we the listeners but we know that the propaganda and their hatred towards Obama began even before he was elected and worsened when he won the election. It is not because President Obama has done anything wrong that have made them to hate him but it is because they did not want him to be the president in the first place and promised to sabotage him until they are satisfied that they have made him fail. Each time Obama succeeds, they became very sad.

The majority of Americans who wanted health care reformed with public option may still respond to the polls that they don't like it the way it is now because they really needed public option and they still want public option now. But in the end they are still happy and will be happy that at least something was done.

When polls show that Obama is still very popular abroad, it is a good thing for America. It was very embarrassing to the people of America when Bush was the president, for them to see Bush being sneaked through the streets of European capitals so that Europeans do not get to see him in fear of him being pelted with stones. Obama has tried to restore American foreign glory that Bush completely destroyed. Americans are once again respected in foreign countries as it used to be.

John 13:34 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another." End of quote. This is a statement directly from the Lord Jesus Christ.

Any human being who never takes heed of this new commandment given to us by our Lord Jesus Christ should never and never regard himself as being a follower of Christ hence a Christian. Do not deceive yourself because obviously you are NOT.

We hear them deceive people every single day that they are more of Christians than others while what they practice is anti Christian. They harbor jealousy, hatred, bitterness, envy, selfishness, greed and apathy towards their neighbors, just to mention a few, and they still call themselves Christians. Shame on them. If you do not have love for one another, you will never see the kingdom of God whether you are a preacher or a pagan.

If you want to play politics, please do so without bringing in the name of the Lord Jesus, while hiding behind the pulpit to make yourself look like you are holier than thou. Republicans are never holier than Democrats just by repeating it in their mouths all the time.

Why are Republicans bitter when Democrats try to make health care affordable to all Americans? With them, the focus is money while Christ says through his apostles that the love for money is the root of all evils.

      • In the story of 'The Good Samaritan' in the new testament, it is clearly explained that a 'Republican' preacher passed by a dying man but felt that it was not his business to see to it that this dying individual receive immediate health care that would save his life.
      • A 'Democrat' came by and saw the same dying individual really in need of urgent health care and instead of him passing as the 'Republican' had done, the 'Democrat' stopped and paid attention to this individual and made sure that this individual received the health care that he really needed for his life to be saved. Let me ask; Between the 'Republican' who never cared and the 'Democrat' who stopped to care, who is Christian?

Why should Republicans oppose a law that guarantees good health for all Americans? Is it out of jealousy, selfishness, greed, apathy, or what is it? Are these Republicans really thinking right or are they out of their minds?

Matthew 25: 35-40 "‘For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; 36 naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.’ 37 “Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink? 38 ‘And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? 39 ‘When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ 40 “The King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.’

I'm sure you can understand this, because I'm sure you consider yourself a Christian (when it's convenient to do so).

      • For those who call themselves Christians but are doing the opposite of what Christ commanded his followers to do. "Go away for I do not Know you" is what the Lord Jesus will tell them on the Day of Judgment. It is amazing how some of these people have extreme hatred for others but still have the guts of calling themselves Christians!

Tea Party is just another name for Republican Party. Members of the Tea Party are those Republicans who refused to accept the Democrats huge victory in the last general elections. They are those people who became so bitter with the outcome of the last general election and therefore decided to continue with their 2008 campaigns against the Democrats without stopping. The Democrats called off their 2008 campaigns immediately after the elections while the very bitter and disappointed members of Republican Party decided to continue with the 2008 campaigns non stop under the disguise of the name Tea party. They are republicans hiding under the name Tea party so that people do not blame Republican Party for not having called off their 2008 campaigns at the end of the elections.

Sarah Palin for example became very sad when she lost and that bitterness of losing made her not recognize the current administration. She decided to console herself by continuing to run all over the country criticizing and throwing insults at the current administration under the cover of Tea party.

Democracy requires that when you lose in a fair election, you should accept defeat. Shake hands with the winner and be ready to work with the winner until the next election time. Respect people’s decision.

Showing disrespect to the elected leaders implies that you do not respect the people who elected them in those positions.

The repubs do not have to do anything different from what they are doing. The people do not respect the decision that they made in 2008 . This is obvious.
      The repubs are winning!!!

      Alex,

Actually, a minority of the populace is unhappy with President Obama, the same minority that voted against him and LOST to the Majority of the populace who DID vote for him and actually ARE happy with the way he has performed under adversity. The minority, the Repubs and Pumas, are severely disrespecting the Rest of us. The way that the Repubs in office, the Corporate Lobbyists, leaders and owners, as well as the TP crowd and right wing owned media have NEVER shown any sort of respect for our Rightful President is a downright disgraceful statement about them: they do not have the good graces enough to admit that they lost, move ahead and Work WITH the President for the good of The People instead of working for the Corporations.

The Too-Rich-To-Fail Club and the multi-national corporations do not have to worry about where their next meal is coming from or whether they will still be working next week. All that they worry about is if their profits will stay high enough that their Management/Investor Class will get high enough pay and bonuses, ones that will add a couple more zeros to their already obscene savings accounts. Whether the actual employees who do the labor get raises that allow them to keep up with inflation, can pay their bills and eat at the same time is the Last thing on their minds.

The Tea Partiers and Repubs, along with their rich corporate handlers need to understand something: America has seen through them, a lot of us do NOT just follow blindly along with them and their self-serving garbage ideas and lies just because they scream them loudly and often. In fact, it is actually working the other way; we have heard the SAME lies for multiple decades, the ideas are the same, the ideology is the same and we have seen that it DOES NOT WORK! Every time that the Repubs get into power the National Debt goes skyrocketing, the rich get richer, the middle class gets poorer, the ecology gets worse and then just as things are about to fall completely apart, they hand it off to the Dems so that they get to blame Them for it falling apart. Even if everybody knows exactly Whose watch it was that set it all up to collapse in the first place. We have watched this cycle a few times now and can easily see the same old plot being repeated.

If the Repubs were to REALLY want to get The People behind them, then they would start to Honestly make the effort to work with the party that happens to be in power presently to actually make America a better place to live for the Middle Class and the Poor. To make better laws concerning Corporations and how they hire and pay their workers, how they are properly taxed without loopholes, and to limit how much of their income can actually go to the Management class and Shareholders (most of whom are actually both.) They would need to be more concerned with the middle class and poor being able to make ends meet and be paid at Least well enough to keep ahead of inflation rather than to be losing to it all the time.

However, the Repubs have plainly shown, especially with their recent "Pledge" that they are TOTALLY clueless as to the Actual needs of America and are Only interested in Power for the sake of having Power. Not to be able to do any actual good with it for the people that they are Supposed to represent, but to continue to to do the bidding of Those-Too-Rich-To-Fail while the other 98% of the people, that they are supposed to be representing, are slipping farther and farther behind and into poverty.

The Repub Party and it's handlers and subsidiaries need to relearn Honesty, Integrity, Humility, Charity, and how to actually Work Together with the Dems for the Common Good of the Nation before they become totally irrelevant and die as a party. As it is, they are walking further and further into Deception, Irresponsibility, Obstructionism, Greed, Unbridled Hatred and Outright Lies as they move farther towards the extreme far right fringes where nobody really wants to follow them except for those that they have duped all along.

The GOTP is not winning, they just think they are because they have gotten the media that they own to scream it loud enough, long enough that they are actually believing it themselves.

The rest of us are counting our fingers and realizing that we are short a few after the Last GOP handshake!

        At last.

At last...the people are paying attention. At last, the people realize that the only time and place their wishes will even be noticed is at the voting booth. At last, we can impose term limits the old fashioned way. Throw the bums out.

The Republican cry now is, “we know what to do – put us in charge”. The rational response to that of course is to question why they would have kept it secret so long and just criticized and obstructed everything. They have consistently put their political ambitions above all else, at any cost to the people, and have said and done everything to rationalize their positions and to manipulate public opinion – without hesitation or conscience. Why should anyone now believe something has changed? No, their concentration actually has constantly been on just being ‘puppets’ for Special Interests and the select few who strongly support them and who ‘pull their strings’ and there is nothing to indicate there has been any change in that. They want to repeal all of the changes already made, which would put us right back to where we were, and they want us to believe they would then turn around and make appropriate changes, those that they have strongly faulted and resisted all along and that their supporters don’t want. They may now admit that changes are really required but with their history and demonstrated loyalty to the very few, while giving only subterfuge to the many, there isn’t any real justification to believe that they want anything other than to return to ‘more of the same’ that cost us so much and that serves only the few. There is simply no honest or conscientious base established to justify trusting them, in fact, the last ten years has provided ample justification to not trust them. Their rhetoric is completely deceptive and totally insulting in their arrogantly thinking that people are just so easily conned and manipulated.

There is no hope offered in ever returning to ‘more of the same’ as that only satisfies the very few. What we need is the changes being implemented and to see them adjusted and fine tuned and definitely not repealed which would leave us with no progress. The Republicans, regular or Tea Party, offer nothing but a return to ‘more of the same’ and to firmly reject them now, along with their self-serving subterfuge aimed to manipulate, should prompt them to really understand it is about honestly, conscientiously and responsibly representing the people, not just the few and their own political interests.

I don't see how we Republican's figure we could ever again, win another election, who will vote for us; not the gay, not the Mexican, not the military, not the young, not the black, not the Jew, not the Muslin, no woman in her right mind, no rational person with reasonable expectations. I think we're toast (white toast).
