In a potential sign of things to come, Mitt Romney has endorsed Christine O'Donnell. The release from his PAC below.
Here's what we wrote in First Thoughts on this for context:
One thing is certainly clear, however: This temporary evolution within the Republican Party will end up pushing the 2012 GOP presidential field more to the right. Next year, we won't see a John McCain (supporting comprehensive immigration reform), Rudy Giuliani (supporting abortion rights), or a Mitt Romney circa '06 (supporting a health-insurance mandate). As Pat Buchanan asked on "Morning Joe," if they want to lead this party in 2012, don't the Romneys and Pawlentys and Barbours need to embrace O'Donnell and campaign for her this fall? Buchanan made this point: In '64, Nelson Rockefeller refused to wear a Goldwater button, while Richard Nixon campaigned for him in 40 states. One became president, the other got kicked off the GOP national ticket. Bottom line: Does the Tea Party/DeMint crowd punish any presidential wannabe in '12 who doesn't help O'Donnell meaningfully? Does this become like the '06 Lamont-Lieberman litmus test.
Here's the release:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 15, 2010
Mitt Romney endorses Christine O'Donnell for U.S. Senate
Today, Mitt Romney's Free and Strong America PAC endorsed Christine O'Donnell, who is running to serve the people of Delaware in the U.S. Senate (www.christine2010.com <http://www.christine2010.com/>). It also is sending her campaign a maximum $5,000 contribution."Now is the time for Republicans to rally behind their nominee, Christine O'Donnell. She ran an impressive campaign. I believe it is important we support her so we can win back the U.S. Senate this fall," said Romney.
This endorsement is another in a series of state rollouts of the PAC's 2010 endorsements, which are aimed at electing conservative candidates who will work to lower taxes and spending, restore commonsense principles to healthcare and get our economy moving again. As part of this program, Romney's PAC also has announced endorsements in Ohio, Missouri, California, Pennsylvania, Hawaii, Nevada, Illinois, Georgia, Texas, Indiana, Idaho, New Mexico, Virginia, Florida, North Dakota, South Carolina, Utah, Maine, South Dakota, New Jersey, North Carolina, Wyoming, Colorado, Michigan, Oklahoma, Oregon, Montana, and Nebraska.
Free and Strong America PAC:
Mitt Romney's Free and Strong America PAC (www.FreeStrongAmerica.com <http://www.freestrongamerica.com/>) supports officeholders and candidates who are dedicated to advancing social, fiscal and foreign policies that will strengthen America at this critical time in the nation's history. The guiding focus is on the core principles that have built and nurtured America since its founding - uncompromised military strength, a belief in the power of free markets and that a competitive America is one where taxes are low and government is small, an emphasis on strong families and a federalist approach to government that leaves decision-making as close to the people as possible.

If Romney wants the proverbial snowballs chance he has got to swing a bit more right. He is probably the front runner as of now, but he won't be able to get nominated without at least nominal backing from the tea partiers.
O My, 1st Read has reduced itself even further by Quoteing Pat Buchanon, the Biggest Racist on TV, today. Please GOP, take Pats advice & run withit. He tries to laugh away his racist talk, but anyone with an ounce of Intelligence, can see thru his Talk.
WoW, what a night for the GOP establishment, beaten down like a borrowed mule. I said this sometime ago, Jim Demint is after Mitch Mcconnel & his GOP Establishment. The goodoleBoy network is in disarray today.
Mitt Romney is trying to get ahead of all of them, but perinial candidates seldom get the Attention needed for the Long Haul.
Welcome to the Circus Republicans, the "Clowns have Arrived"!
Barnum & Bailey has got Nuttin on this Bunch.
Pop the Popcorn Feisty, the Circus is in Town!
You Betcha!
Before the primary no Member of the gop would back O'donnell, but after she won they all fliped and flopped, right to her noing that she is not qualitfied to get the job done . but that don't matter none of them up there can get the job done either. if they thought Sarah palin could be vice president then who nos what will happen what ever happens it want be for the betterment of this country .
Romney may want to consult with his fellow LDS member, Beck, for campaign strategies! lol
You're not ok with the LDS church? What other religions are you against? Do you only support atheists when you go to the voting booth?
Suite Judy
Unlike Evangelicals, I have no problem with anyones religious beliefs. I only have a problem with those who pervert their religious beliefs to do very bad things.
It was the Evangelicals that kicked up the fuss about his faith. I am not one of them! How did atheists get into this...but I am equally cool with them.
And for the record, I am a Democrat! 'nough said!
Gov: Romney if he needs to consult with anybody ( I do this myself) He will fold his arms, Bow his head and ask the heavenly Farther.
Both men (Beck & Romney) have a stronge Spirituality.
Mitten is as much an ideological chameleon as most of his Conservative cronies. Originally a big business Republican who was liberal on social issues, by 2008 he was a "true" Cultural Conservative. Now it's the faux-Libertarian patina that excites primary voters, so he tacks in that direction.
It really doesn't matter, all that stuff is just window dressing for the masses. His goal now is the same as it is for everyone who's well up the Conservative power structure, the same as it was when most of his time went to his job as a corporate raider...get himself to the top by destroying others.
Well said John: How many votes will a Mitten endorsement garner for Christine? My guess is some number less than one. But ol' Romney is telling the world that he supports crazy tea partiers.
You beat me to it John... chameleon is the PERFECT depiction of the Party of NO!
They're nothing more than run of the mill lizards who would sell their mother's if they thought they would get a voter!
"The guiding focus is on the core principles that have built and nurtured America since its founding - uncompromised military strength, a belief in the power of free markets and that a competitive America is one where taxes are low and government is small, an emphasis on strong families and a federalist approach to government that leaves decision-making as close to the people as possible."
At least here is a definition, although it rings rather hollow. How can one have "uncompromised military strength" and at the same time have "low taxes" and small government? For all those people who think "entitlements" are a problem, look at the percent of our annual budget eaten up by the military. If taxes are low and the military can ask for and get however much money it wants, who is going to pay for it? Or are we headed for an army of mercenaries and contractors -- a "for-profit" outfit? Or are there going to be private adventurers who will invest in a bunch of soldiers and then send them off to sniff out possibly lucrative situations around the world? (oil, anyone?)
Then there is the vague comment about the "emphasis on strong families" -- what exactly does that mean? Or rather, what is a "weak" family, and how would Gov. Romney or his party go about turning a weak family into a strong one?
As to your question on spending for military strength, would you support an audit of military/defense spending with an AUTOMATIC indictment for any political office holder found to have siphoned/stolen/grafted whatever term you want to use $$$ from the taxpayer and hidden it in the budget on defense, no matter which party or how high the office?
Romney is a Mutt!!!! He has no following in Delaware....
Suite Judy,
The answer, from me at least is yes. I am a Dem, but would very much like to reduce waste where it can be found and corruption, no matter who is the culprit, at all cost.
He would back Osama Bin Laden if he thought it would help his polital career.
Soon he will singing "I'm a little teapot short and stout, here is my handle here is my spout".
Not to mention " I walk the line" and "because of you"
Welcome to First Read where it's all Christine O'Donnell ALL-THE-TIME.....
O'Donnel is fast approaching the the "Joe Wilson" level of obsession...What's next, Lady Ga-Ga tweets O'Donnel?
'smatter, Danger- wanna change the subject for some reason??
dangerfie;d-they needed something-Palin was getting kind of old.
I wonder if the authors, or the posters, for that matter, actually expected any Republican to back a Democrat? One certainly does not hear shock and outrage when, say, a Democrat endorses a Democrat.
It's all hypocricy, all the time.
Awww, whatsa matta, NoJo? Just think how neat-o-riffic it will be to have a "God said to letcha meatloaf" candidate to 'root' for in November!
Sarah Palin remains MSNBC's all-the-time obsession.
From Chris Matthews to Ed Schultz (a journey measured in light-years in terms of intellectual capacity), the brain trust (!) at MSNBC has focused, like a laser beam, on Sarah Palin.
Christine O'Donnell has some catching up to do.
I'd like to hear Alan Grayson weigh in on this controversy.
drive-by-observer
'smatter, Danger- wanna change the subject for some reason??

Sounds like a drive-by to me...lol
There was that news a few weeks back when Obama and Clinton endorsed different candidates. Then it was D v. D SMACKDOWN. This endorsement is news because of the presidential implications. If a Republican was in the White House, we would be talking about which potential Democratic nominee in 2012 endorsed who. It also smacks of political opportunism by Romney, who hasn't been above such moves in the past (not that he is the first ever politician to do so).
Mit is a dim wit! That man like most of the GOP is so out of touch with reality it hurts to watch. This country was founded onthe principles of free expression. So he has his voice ok fine. The rest of the sane people will continue to do our best to hold on to what the GOP has not destroyed
chilled
You took the words away from me before I could even strike a key. I also was thinking about Romeny changing colors as in a chameleon.
Bev, especially after all the heat that Mittens took for being a Mormon (not moron). It just seemed like the right would be enraged.....but I guess they can be forgiving of their own kind...nobody else!
Guess I'm glad the 'big tent' folks want to bring women into the game, but geez- do they have to maintain that stupid requirement that the women all have that 'fingernails-on-chalkboard' quality to their voices?
Palin, Bacmann, Angle, and now this 'Hi foks- I want you to let your meatloaf' twitt.
Sorry- need to correct myself. I lumped Angle in with the other screech-owls. Sharon sounds more like Edith Bunker on an overdose of downers. Sorry, Sharron. Carry on.
BTW- I'm not getting paid for this one. The people that pay me for the '1 or 2 line' posts I put up all day don't cover my own mistakes.
Guess Mitt forgot to read the newspapers or listen to the news--the GOP didn't support O'Donnell, the RNSC will not give her campaign funds, 44% (?) of republicans voting for Castle said they will vote for the democrat.
Good points in your article. I don't see how they can't support this young lady. But I have a lot of confidence in VP Biden and the Delaware voters. Here's hoping the Democrats don't gang up on her too much, especially Joe Biden. If the Democrats can campaign in a professional, mature manner, we'll be okay. The differences will be striking. As far as Mitt Romney, I agree with Forrest Gump above. There isn't much Mr. Romney wouldn't do to be President. He's got that desperate look to him. He's evidently driving a pickup truck these days. This is the same guy who laid off an awful lot of people and hired cheap labor to make money and then has the audacity to paint himself as the wise one on economics. He evidently cleaned up the Olympics. Who wouldn't if given millions of dollars to do so?
"What Washington DC needs is adult supervision". Barack Obama
Here's hoping the Democrats don't gang up on her too much...
I'd go after Palin, Dick Armey, Fox News, etc. and all the money behind this campaign. btw, how much money did Fox give to the GOP?
Not near as much as MSNBC, CNN, NBC, ABC, New York Times, Huffington Post (your entire info sources) gave to the Democrats. What’s your point.
In principle, Mr. Romney is right. That's not to say I support his political ideology, but in this case, he is 100% correct that the RNC needs to stand by the duly elected candidate for their party, whether it was their original "favorite child" or not. It's called integrity.
Romney would have been our next president... had he not mentioned his involvement in the religious cults .And playing up to the religious cult cost him his bid for the White house .I was voting for him until he exposed that side of himself ..Any cult member involvement and they lose my vote ! I don't want to hear about thier beliefs..... ITS JUST NONE OF MY BUSINESS ! I look at religious cult members like don't ask don't tell !
Mark/Domenico: Could you do your readers here a favor? Could you at some point list the different camps in the Republican Party? Some of us aren't sure who sides with who. Looks like Palin is going after Rove. DeMint seems to be a major player here as well with the teabaggers. Mitch McConnell. Doesn't appear anyone likes him except his rich donors.
Blanche Lincoln. Is she gone? 100% gone?
Can you guys list the different camps among Democrats as well?
You know...the ones like Steny who are open to extending the Bush tax cuts for everyone, as opposed to the others?
And the ones who actually want President Obama to campaign for them...as opposed to the incumbent Democrats who manage to find a previous engagement to attend whenever the President shows up in their state/district?
Is the House 100% gone?
I guess First Read called it on this one.
Is there such a thing as a moderate Republican anymore? Doesn't look like it.
I agree with you Amy. First Read has been telling us this for a long long long time.
Peppy le Pew loves you!!!....mmmmm....mmmmm....mmm..xoxoxoxo
It takes a skunk to love a skunk!
So the Breck Girl (Mittens) decides to endorse the crazy girl.
Another Palin, O'Donnell, lies with the best of them. The radical elements of the Republican party are "rearing their ugly heads. These racial people, will try to dictate how we all live. It is their way or the highway.
If they think it wrong for them, then by golly it is wrong for you too.
Dangerous people. They will take your rights away
If the Dems had any brains, they'd put together an ad featuring a mock panel discussion with the faces and quotes of O'Donnell, Rand Paul, Susan Angle, Carly Fiorina, and maybe a few others, with their best and most extreme quotes. The tag line, "Is this the face of the Republican Party? Is this the face we want for America?" The Dems need to attack by lumping all these clowns together and show that the GOP is endorsing the whole package. Afterall, that is what they are doing by tagging every Democrat with Pelosi and Reid.
Mike Castle apparently is not going to sing kuhmbaya with the wingnuts According to the Hill, he's refusing to endorse O'Donnell. Castle seems to be a decent human being with integrity from what I've seen (any Republican who can take on Steven Colbert must have SOMETHING going for him). So I doubt he's just being a spoil sport. He's just not inclined to endorse dangerous radicals.
http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/senate-races/118847-castle-will-not-back-odonnell
Houston!... Castle won't endorse for simple reasons. I am from Delaware and have worked with Mike in the past. He is more than decent and has NEVER run a negative campaign. This person, O'Donnell, questioned his manhood, question his service, questioned his integrity. This from a person, O'Donnell, who can't keep a job, uses campaign funds for personal reasons, doesn't pay employees or staff, while basking in luxury on donors backs. These are not talking points.... I live here and know these things to be true. She is an absolute Witch and will do anything to become viable. That is why Mike won't endorse and I fully support his decision. She is an absolute loser.... She got 29,000 votes in a closed republican primary..... She will need to get 200,000 to win a general.... How will that happen???? The whole state is not redneck and/or stupid.... majority are educated and live in New Castle and will NOT vote for a Walmart version of Sarah Palin.... BTW... is she a Virgin??? Never married... Hope she has remained true to her God and not given into temptation???
Good for Mike Castle to stand by his principles. I had a feeling that he is that sort of person based on his long tenure as a Republican Congressman with statewide support in a blue state. Too bad such are being purged from the party.
Of course you Libs like Castle cause he's a RINO, you know, a guy without enough guts to say he's a democrat. Maybe he could switch parties like Spectre. You guys deserve the 'crumb of the crop'. I forgot you've already got enough losers in your party.
So what about O'Donnell's past campaign manager said she lived off her campaign donations. Wouldn't that be a serious violation of the use of campaign money?? Apparently her finances are in a shambles - is this who we want in the Senate to help with US finances?
She can win folks - look at where Rand Paul stands right now. He can win. It's time for the democratic politicians to fight back but I have never seen such a bunch of wusses like them. Good heavens - democrat politicians FIGHT for the middle class!
O'Donnell rented a posh apartment in the upper crust area of New Castle. She then stated she was using it as her campaign headquarters so she was able to skirt the rules.... crazy how easy that is ..isn't it...
Naw, democrat politicians would rather destroy the middle class and turn them into mindless welfare slaves.
Romney is something of a political (government) financial genius. I like him for that reason and the rest of you guys would do well to at least observe this. I would be delighted to hand over my personal finances to him. He is smart to solidify the party.
OK Frank, you're certainly entitled to your opinion. I don't know that I'd trust my JOB to him, though.

Frank - do not let Romney ever touch your money. He buys companies, dismantles them, workers lose their jobs. Is this what you really want??
Romney’s Bain Capital Profited Through Offshore Tax Havens, Closing U.S. Factories, Laying Off Workers
During his campaign, Republican candidate Mitt Romney has preached a message of economic populism by vowing to fight to keep jobs in America. We take a look at Romney’s days heading up the buyout firm Bain Capital with Los Angeles Times reporter, Bob Drogin. He writes, "From 1984 until 1999, Romney led Bain Capital, a Boston-based private equity group that earned jaw-dropping profits through leveraged buyouts, debt hedge funds, offshore tax havens and other financial strategies. In some cases, Romney’s team closed U.S. factories, causing hundreds of layoffs, or pocketed huge fees shortly before companies collapsed."
Hi Elsie: Keep googling...there are plenty of positive financial stories about Mitt Romney. Also look at his record as Governor of Mass.
Elise, you need to do better than that. Your one-sided view of him causing people to lose their jobs says nothing about the ineptness of those running the companies before he came in. Feel free to give facts on the hundreds of jobs lost (which would have been lost anyway when the companies closed their doors) versus the thousands of jobs he created (Staples and Dominoes for example). I'm curious to see real source information about the off-shore tax havens the Times discusses. As usual, the media uses the nebulous "some" to describe things. Sorry, not good enough. Give real facts, not broad judgments from biased sources. Again, point to any situation where Romney has lied about something. He has always been open and honest about position changes, even when it has not been helpful to himself. Romney is a very competent man.
By the way, Democrats (and Republicans) trying to lay Obamacare on him is just silly. The only similarity is a mandate, and even that is very different. Let me know if you would like me to list the factual differences. As an actuary who has spent a lot of time studying Romneycare versus Obamacare, I'd be happy to.
Again, feel free to dispute anything you would like in my reply...but do so with real, hard facts in context.
Romneys a good family man, good business man, etc. There's just something thats not quite right about him. Maybe it's cause he tried to implement the Obama health care in Mass. long before anybody had heard about Obama (you know, the good 'ol days).
Many Tea Party supporters are standing up against the pacifying of Islamic Terror groups at the cost of giving up many basic American Freedoms. The surge in replacing incumbents who cater to the Pacifying Freedom costing ways of the current Administration will most likely continue until the Politicians start representing the true will of the people and support Freedom of Speech and all Rights equally and stop the practice of using double standards.
Hi I apologize if this came out too strongly without some added comments.
I just returned from India in remote parts. I most often stay with Tibetan or Muslim friends. So please this was not meant to be biased against my friends. So here is some more to the story.
I had received news that my Tibetan Friend a cook from the OHM Cafe had his head cut off, his body quartered. All parts were put on stakes, the head in the middle of a village and the body sections in the four directions at the entrances to the village. As a warning not to upset extremists.
At the same times some Muslim village girls I know had the hands cut off by their own family for talking to Christians. Now in many areas of India there are local leaders who are religious based extremists and I have seen so much happening mostly at the hands of extremist or by others out of fear, and everyone is too scared to stop it.
Many of these folks are bragging about their victories in the USA and Europe. I had to leave India due to death threats many because I would speak to Muslims in public. The fear these extremest use is causing others to allow them absolute freedom to do as they wish.
Now here in America we keep hearing how we don't want to incite the extremist so let's not do anything that could upset them....and we greatly constrict freedoms out of fear, rather than respect. And fear of a particular group..where as their own people are asking us to stand up against the oppression.
It reminds me of a family where the father beats the children and the mother keeps saying don't upset your father,,you know what could happen....now who is holding the father responsible ??no one.
A man in NJ just got fired by the NJ Transit for burning a Koran on his own time, ..where is the ACLU on this one..how many Bibles have been burnt with no firings..see the fear driving people to constrict freedoms..this is what happened in the villages ..what I am saying you go see the fear in their lives, and from their own Religion.
It starts with handing over your power of freedom in small areas and spreads. That was my intention. I should be married now, but the locals were told to not allow the marriage, and my fiance and her family were threatened as was I. And I reported this and the Help Save Bodhgaya and no one would help they were too afraid.
here is an Example ..true story..
A girl was lured to Calcutta by (Muslim non the less) promises of a good job. Once there she was beaten and forced to work as a sex worker often up to 20 clients a day. Many would pay extra so they could beat her.
Now her family found her and brought the pimps to court, she was there, her family was there begging for her to be returned to her family..guess what the judge let the Pimp and his body guards take her with them..it was not until foreign NGOs intervened was she finally returned to her family.
The pimps and their group are teamed up with the Islam extremest and everyone is afraid to upset or incite them. And we are seeing that here..I am saying stand up as it is going to get worse. I met many Islam insiders and they do have a plan which they are executing many of there actions from.
God Bless all religions..save America and help save the Muslims by preserving the liberties of being an American
OH my another GOP'er liking a young woman , he probably would support a young Boy also.
