AP has declared former Maryland Gov. Bob Ehrlich the winner tonight of the Republican nomination for governor over Sarah Palin-backed Brian Murphy. It sets up an Ehrlich vs. incumbent Gov. Martin O'Malley showdown.
This may be a blue state, but don't underestimate Republicans' chances here. Just look at the results from Delaware Senate tonight. So far, Christine O'Donnell leads 56%-45% over Mike Castle with 37% of precincts reporting.
Anything can happen, especially if Democrats sit on their hands. And Ehrlich is a much more credible candidate than O'Donnell as Maryland, like many other states, is having to make serious budget cuts. That said, Democrats in Maryland are more engaged voters than in many places. Either way, this is one to watch.

Well darn; no Tea Party victory here...(Dems for a Vibrant Tea Party!)
It's that weirdo hillbilly woman palin that made her lose ..I don't trust anyone she endorses !
The tea party is only helping the Democrats in November, thank you!
then we all lose - even those too stupid to realize it
The more tea-party nuts the Republicans elect in their primaries, the more I like the chances of the Democrats not only holding onto Congress but having a BIG 60+ majority in the Senate so we can toss that BIG HEADED IDIOT from Connecticut out of our caucus. Let Palin keep endorsing NUTS who are just like her and we Dems will be just fine and we can move forward with helping the Middle Class and the Poor!
That's right all you Dems, you just keep thinking everything is just fine in your party...Then when November comes-BOOM!!
You hope, comrade. I think this just shows how fed up WE THE PEOPLE are with this socialist agenda.
if anyone in seattle knows eddie - give him a slap
I thought I was the only one to call the Connecticut Senator "big head". He is an ego maniacal slump who the Dems had to coddle to pass important bills.
The Republicans thought there was going to a backlash against the Democrats when it is their own selections who are going down by a leaderless group of crazies. Steele has no recourse but to sit back and watch his party go down. Remember it was Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld that caused this country to become weak. Now deviant people are trying to legitimize unnatural acts (marriage equality) to normal people. Marriage is between a man and a woman! Not two men or two women! Next they will be pushing for humans with animals.
America is on its way out and will be replaced by China or India if this stupidity continues.
I agree but we have to get the voters to vote.
Go Ehrlich Go!!!
You mean 'Fees and taxes are not the same' Ehrlich?
Remember the FLUSH TAX (oooooooops. I mean the flat fee on water usage, including those who don't use municipal water and sewerage services.)!
Bend over GOBP and drop trou. you are going to get an a$$ swating come Nov. that will send y'all to Beckistan for treatment..lol. Hey did y'all hear the POTUS speech today..lol.Whoops forgot y'all want to eliminate public education..lol.POTUS is going to spank y'all for the rest of us..lol.
go jo...here in Colorado, we've got one Tea-bagger for Senate and TWO for governor. Dems in a walk...
Kathy, most of the voters have been disqualified from voting in the primaries.
Registered independents are not allowed to vote unless an independent is running.
Thank your local voting board for nullifying the right to VOTE IN ALL ELECTIONS.
ozzi - I think you mistake the primary (in which a political party decides who their candidate will be) for the general election (one person - one vote guarantee, to actually assign the job for the coming term). Don't know about you, but I'd be pissed if the other parties could vote in, (ie...sabotage) my party's primary.
Sorry to be a dose of reality, but couldn't that just as easily read, "especially if REPUBLICANS" sit on their hands? I mean shoot Domenico, two sentences later, you write, "Democrats in Maryland are more engaged voters than in many places."
If it's a blue state, and Republicans don't come out to vote because the TEA PARTY candidate LOST, uhhh... wouldn't that make this a better Dem pickup opportunity? Tea Partiers are the supposed "motivated" voters, and if their guy lost, where's the enthusiasm for the "moderate" GOP guy going to come from?
Getting to be to late for me in Maryland, both raised my taxes over and over. I think that Ehlich was better than O'Malley. But I think I'd just like to leave the state like most people are doing!
Simeon?
If 'most people' are leaving the state of Maryland, why did, between April 1, 2000 to July 1, 2009, the population of Maryland rise an estimated 7.6% (according to estimates by the US Census Bureau)?
Where do you want to move to? Someplace that people are just flocking to? States such as:
Alabama, where the population rose an estimated 5.9%?
Mississippi, where the population rose an estimated 3.8%?
Kansas, where the population rose an estimated 4.8%?
Oklahoma, where the population rose an estimated 6.9%?
Nebraska, where the population rose an estimated 5.0%?
West Virginia, where the population rose an estimated 0.6%?
Ohio, where the population rose an estimated 1.7%?
Pennsylvania, where the population rose an estimated 2.6%?
Maybe North Dakota, where the population rose an estimated 0.7%?
Or maybe Iowa, where the population rose an estimated 2.8%?
Maybe it's to Airy-Zona, where the population rose an estimated 28.6%? Be forewarned, though, that if you have an accent, you may be asked to prove your citizenship, and not just once, but several times a month after month after month after. . . . And believe me, Marylander's have an accent. I found that out when I moved from Indiana to Maryland in 1973.
Oh, and many people in Airy-Zona don't 'cotton' to people who call a carbonated drink a 'soda' - not calling it 'pop' or 'coke' marks them as an outsider and someone not to be trusted, more reason to require them to prove their citizenship.
I have personally known quite a few people that have left the state. I don't doubt that Maryland's population has gone up over the last decade, BRAC alone would do that. I'm not overly concerned of an accent, that's the least of my worries of leaving MD. I did live for a few years in Trafalgar, IN and I didn't notice much of an accent there. The closest to anyone saying I had an accent was that I talked fast.
Wouldn't it be an odd country that you would have have to worry about what you call sugar water. By the way years ago it was common to call it soda-pop.
Anyway, consistant raising of taxes and fees for everything is the problem. You have to look around and wonder if it's worth staying here. Terrible traffic, crime (not that I live in a bad area, but still a worry), too much government in things that we do, lack of freedoms.
To sum it up, I do believe that has Maryland Government grows and taxes more and more it will drive people like me away :-)
I'm going to leave this state as soon as I can. Maryland also taxes retirement...what little we may have! I think the reason the population has increased is because of illegal aliens!!!!!!
Maybe, if Erlich wins.. the smart people that moved because of O'Malley will come back. I would be one of them.
then we all lose - even those too stupid to realize it
Help me!!! I am stuck in a democratic state where clearly 60% of the voters are lemmings and Unions still hold sway. Nothing has changed in this state as the Maryland Republican party is still in disarray after Ehrlich was beaten by O'Malley last time. One local pol puts it this way, regardless of who wins in November, thanks to the antics of the good ole boys in Annapolis, Marylanders are going to see huge tax and fee increases in 2011. Maybe it's time to move to a more forward thinking state like Pennsylvania.
Erlich was a much better Gov. than O'Malley. Businesses and people prospered. O'Malleys tax stance mabe businesses and people leave. He left Baltimore in a mess. It's time Maryland voters wake up and get Erlich back.
Cuprace, I have my doubts Ehrlich can beat Owe'Malley as the Republican party in Maryland is virtually non-existant. Either way cuprace, we are looking at huge tax increases, new taxes and fees and a generally horrible 2011 in Maryland.
Look at the primary results and you see that, obviously, Marylanders(at least those who chose to show up and vote) are not in the same mood as the rest of the nation. Unions still hold sway here and that is just a terrible predictament for this sad, sad state. I am seriously considering moving to PA given where we are headed regardless of who wins the governors race in November.
MD Repub - If you move, there will be even fewer MD Repub's...anyway, love central PA, grew up there. If politics are the criteria for where you decide to live, you'll fit in. (politicians seriously used to say - privately - "Pittsburgh on one side, Philly on the other and Alabama in between") Never spent alot of time in Philly, but I know Pittsburgh really well and you'd hate it. Way too over-run with unions - you know - with their annoying insistence on a liveable wage, in exchange for 40 hours a week for your entire adult life...
Erlich was a much better Gov. than O'Malley. Businesses and people prospered under Erlich. O'Malleys tax stance mabe businesses and people leave. He left Baltimore in a mess. It's time Maryland voters wake up and get Erlich back.

sorry about the triple post guys.
'Erlich' ???
You back 'Fees are not the same as taxes' Ehrlich, and can't spell his name correctly?
My spelling? Thats your only gripe? That was a result of spellcheck and I didnt catch it.
But yes Ehrlich 100 times better than O'Malley
Erlich won the first time because he had Steele on the ticket while his opponent chose Kennedy-Townsend. Had Steele not chosen to run for Senator, Erlich probably would have been re-elected.
Might want to get your facts checked there, 'mike789'.
Kathleen Kennedy Townsend was the Lt. Governor under Parris Glendening (Governor of Maryland from 1995 to 2003). It was Kathleen Kennedy Townsend who ran as the Democratic Party candidate for Governor in 2002, when Boobie won the election for Governor.
The Lt. Governor under Martin O'Malley (the Democratic Party candidate who ousted Boobie from the Governor's Mansion in the 2006 election) is Anthony G. Brown.
Boobie?
Knowing what we know about him now, contemplating how Steele as a 2-time Lt.Gov would have had a real shot at being elected governor is chilling.
EHRLICH.......EHRLICH.......EHRLICH........ ( Love the posts/ political opinions.) * How many people have no clue what is going on in State government? USA society is far too caught up with Entertainment social tabloid news and do not take time to delve past the first 3 sentences.
