What does a Democratic septuagenarian son of a hard rock miner from Searchlight, Nevada have in common with a bisexual pop megastar whose political statements have been known to involve wearing raw meat?
Twitter, apparently, and support for ending the military’s policy of banning openly gay members from serving.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had a virtual exchange today with Lady Gaga – who happens to have 7 million followers on the social media website – over the timing of a vote to repeal the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy.
“Gay Veterans were my VMA dates,” she tweeted, including a photo of herself with discharged members of the military at the MTV awards festivities over the weekend. “Repeal Don't Ask Don't Tell. CALL HARRY REID to Schedule Senate Vote.”
In a response, Reid flagged the “Poker Face” artist to a press release from his campaign website indicating that the vote has in fact been set for next week. “@ladygaga There is a vote on #DADT next week. Anyone qualified to serve this country should be allowed to do so,” he replied.

You have to smile at the whole idea of this tidbit, Harry Reid and Lady Gaga. I know little about her except her wild costumes but her invitation to the gay veterans to accompany her to the VMA to make a point about an injustice is terrific.
I'm one of FR greatest supporters. But for the life of me I can't find any relevant news here. If anyone else can, clue me in.
shiny!....or as Jon Stewart said last night...""squirrel!"
Everything is so heavy and partisan that I think it is nice to see a lighter item every once in a while. At least Harry Reid seems to know what Twitter is and who Lady Gaga is (or his staff is hip)!
I hope she encourages her 7 million contacts to vote in November.
Most of her contacts are under 18.
Yes that sounds reasonable.
I'm no fan of the music of Lady Gaga. I am more of a U2, you know, classic rock fan. However, I am now a huge fan of Lady Gaga and her humanity. She has an audience and the attention and if she chooses to expose the injustice of civil rights and social issues and make a statement reaching millions resulting in perhaps getting young people paying attention and more involved, I applaud her!
Rachel Maddow covered the Lady Gaga "dates" to the MTV VMAs and interviewed one of them, Cadet Katherine Miller, who recently resigned from West Point over DADT. She is an inspiration. Lady brought four service members either recently discharged or resigned over DADT. What a way to make a statement.
Go Lady Gaga!

It is real hard to take someone that wears meat seriously.
As far as Cadet Miller. Did she not know she was gay when she went into the Academy? Politics, only politics on her side.
Kirby, yeah, but maybe she thought, like most sane Americans, that this stupid from the beginning law would be repealed long before now. By the way, she was 11th in her class of over 1,000 cadets and transferred to Yale for this year.
And a Federal judge just ruled DADT unconstitutional.
The suit was brought by Log Cabin republicans, and 'vigorously' (according to the AP) defended by the Obama justice department.
First Read didn't see fit to mention it. I guess it isn't newsworthy. Unlike, say, three separate pieces on Obama's back to school speech.
Or maybe they are uncomfortable revealing that the man elected president is a social conservative and a fiscal profligate. Doesn't fit their profile.
So would you be openly gay in a marine barracks?
People, my friend Salt Grass, are 'whos" not "whats". You live your life, you are who you are. You do not apologize, nor do you hide, who you are.
What, pray tell, does 'openly' mean, exactly?
Every human being deserves respect as a human being. Dislike someone for being prone to theft, or to lies, or ill temper. Those are personality traits. Dislike someone for who he or she is? That is the definition of bigotry. I hope you are not prone to that.
Go Go Gaga you ROCK girl.
Harry Reid's po-po-poker face...
Imagine her calling him up to dance like Springsteen and Courtney Cox in the "Dancing in the Dark" video...
What a waste of a good steak. I think she should cover herself in Red Snapper
Somebody MUST be making this all up! An airheaded simpleton trying to advise a braindead (soon to be ex) US Senator on political issues! She/it/whatever ought to be giving Read advice on his pending career change. Really, this woman and her commentary are only fit for the gossip pages in trashy periodicals. Even Read, who is desperately trying to hold on to his Senate seat, shouild know better. Hard to tell witch of them is the bigger fool.
