First Read's Top 10 Senate takeovers

From NBC's Chuck Todd, Mark Murray, and Domenico Montanaro
*** First Read’s Top 10 Senate Takeovers: Chew on this: Right now, Republicans have a better chance of flipping West Virginia’s Senate seat than Democrats have in picking up the one in Ohio. In fact, this is our first Top 10 Senate takeover list this cycle where we don’t have a single Dem pick-up opportunity. According to this list, Republicans -- right now -- would gain a minimum of five seats. Yet to take control of the chamber, they’d need to win all 10 on the list (or win a substitute outside the Top 10). The number in parentheses is our ranking from last month.

1. North Dakota (1): Get ready to ho-down with Republican John Hoeven (R); yes, we're running out of Hoeven puns. Ranking: Solid GOP.
2. Delaware (2): Does Mike Castle (R) survive his primary against Christine O’Donnell (R)? The GOP’s likelihood of winning this seat depends on it. Ranking (with Castle as nominee): Probable GOP.
3. Arkansas (3): Bill Clinton campaigned this week for incumbent Blanche Lincoln (D), but it’s unlikely to change the dynamics of her race against John Boozman (R). Ranking: Probable GOP.
4. Indiana (4): Speaking of being able to change the dynamics, Brad Ellsworth (D) hasn’t caught up to Dan Coats (R). Ranking: Probable GOP.
5. Pennsylvania (5): After being dormant for the last couple of months, Joe Sestak’s (D) campaign has become more active, with Biden and Obama set to stump for him later this month. Right now, though, this is Pat Toomey’s (R) race to lose. Ranking: Lean GOP.
6. Illinois (7): The Alexi Giannoulias (D)-vs.-Mark Kirk (R) contest remains what we consider to be the truest 50%-50% race out there. Ranking: Toss Up.
7. Colorado (unranked): The Ken Buck (R)-vs.-Michael Bennet (D) race is close to being a pure 50%-50% race, too. Which force will be greater -- the overall political environment, or the GOP’s woes in the state? Ranking: Toss Up.
8. Nevada (8): Now we enter the contests where Democrats might have an advantage by a fingernail. But the Harry Reid (D)-vs.Sharron Angle (R) race is going to close. Fasten your seatbelts. Ranking: Toss Up.
9. Wisconsin (unranked): As was the case in ‘98, Russ Feingold (D) is fighting for his political life. What makes this time more difficult for him is that this political environment is much different than ’98 was. Ranking: Toss Up.
10. Washington (10): If Republicans indeed catch a wave on Election Night, we’ll be pulling an all-nighter watching the returns from the Patty Murray (D)-vs.-Dino Rossi (R) race. Ranking: Toss Up.

*** Nos. 11-21 (in order): California (Toss Up), Florida (Toss Up), Missouri (Lean R), Kentucky (Lean R), West Virginia (Lean D), Ohio (Lean R), New Hampshire (Lean R), Connecticut (Lean D), North Carolina (Probable R), Louisiana (Probable R), Alaska (Probable R).

Don't count on losing that seat just yet!!!

Everyone I've talk to so far in my great state has mentioned voting for Gov. Manchin.

I suppose that explains why it is now a five point race. Last month, it was about 20.

Now that Obama has rolled out ANOTHER pork barrel plan, where do you think the polls will go?

It's going to be a bad November if you happen to be a democrat.

Giving ANY Power to the republican club is asking Dracula to guard Our BloodBank.

Employees do not pay unemployment insurance premiums - employers do. And regarding your health care rates, you have nothing to base your claims on other the promises of legislation that hasn't been implemented. You lost your home because you didn't pay your mortgage - a mortgage that you freely signed up for. You should note that it was Clinton who deregulated the banks - he was a democrat. Take a little personal responsibility. Living life as a victim has got to be tiring.

It's getting old as you will find out in November.

Sorry keepN it real but the republicans did not make you buy your house, i'm very sorry this melt down has caused you to loose it, but the decision to buy was yours.

but you are soo right, i can't believe that americans who have been affected by this melt down will forget what republicans have said, from people who need extended umemployment are lazy, and that this recession was all mental, Phill Grahm gave us that one during the 08 campaign to John mccain saying out fundimentals were storng. while 600k were loosing jobs each month. the bill for small business is one that people need to really look at.

last week i was buying a matress. i went to the big chains and they were charging was too much. so i was driving and found a small business that hand makes the matresses at there shop behind the store. i saved 150.00 on the same product at the big chains. small business can do things alot cheaper than big chains as well as hire local people. if the republicans really cared about small business, companies like the one i bought from would on the top of there list to get tax breaks to. but there not, because they have stoped this, because its not about helping the upper 2%, which alot of us who blog here are not apart of.

The Republicans are not responsible for decisions that caused you to lose your home. In all things, personal responsibility.

That said, are the American people as a whole capable of forgetting the fiasco with healthcare?

In a phrase - derp-derp.

Oh please ! Extending Unemployment benefits ( without the money to pay for it ) over and over has nothing to do with what you pay in...Affordable Health Care ? you mean the bill no one read before they voted for it and no one has a clue how it will work ( or IF ? )..and let me remind you it was the Democrats who were pushing for everyone to have a house whether or not they could afford it that caused the banking crisis-i work in the Mortgage business and the loans our underwriters were approving in 2004-2007 were RIDICULOUS ! Both parties had a hand in the mess Obama inherited, but he has done nothing to give confidence to business he knows what he's doing-hence the large Republican gains to come...

There you go keepitreal. Regardless of how many things are out of your control - you will always be seen as a victim no matter how hard you work. Do any of you guys know why this man lost his home? Was he laid off? Did his company go out of business? You Repubs sure are quick to jump to conclusions

And emplyers do not pay unemployment insurance. And by that I mean we all know that those employer obligations are added to the costs of their products or services. So in reality, its the consumer that pays for unemployment insurance.

Affordable Health Care???? Premiums have gone up!!

Mortgages -- Thats too funny....I think I should stop paying my mortgage (one that I knew that I can afford) so government can bail me out...and nobody pointed a gun to your head to buy a house...

Hey Frank -- Quick to jump to conclusions???

I dont hold the Republicans for stopping unemployment. The democrats decided to play political games and instead of just voting for a majority, they wanted to play politics and need a 2/3 vote instead.

No republican or democrat has ever called me lazy.

I also agree with the republicans for trying to stop obamacare. Its crap. I want HCR - but not the crap that they pushed through.

And republicans didnt come and take your house, they are not boogie men living under your bed stealing homes in the dead of night anymore than democrats are. You can blame the republicans if you want, but That is the fault of both republicans for de-regulation and democrats for forcing banks to give loans people cant afford. Personally, i feel more of the later.

If you dont like republicans thats fine- but be honest when your bashing something.

BoBo Clown, you are really a clown.... u sound just like Boner.... " I want HCR, but not the one they passed".... Hey, I want a million dollars...not the money I currently make. Sound familiar?

Jeez, republicans have been getting away with saying stuff with absolutely no substance and no plans... their idea of governing is to sit there an do nothing~~!!!!

At least Bush wised up and did something to help the failing banks... what you and some American's don't understand is that it was needed to shore up the banks~! I dont know how you couldn't see that - WE WERE FREAKING LOSING 700k jobs per month... GM and Chrysler were about to bellie up. and our financial system were about to completely collapse.... home prices would have plummeted significantly with the disastrous jobs report. I commend president Bush for the bold initiative - even though I dont agree with him all the time.

What you need to whine about is why the repaid TARP money isn't used to pay down deficit...not the crap coming out of your mouth (I mean fingers)...

I dont know why anything goes wrong in this country, the blame seems to always lie with either the poor people or immigrants... capitalism is what caused the economy to crash i.e. greedy banks passing loans to people who couldn't afford it. you and I both know that the masses dont care about minute details - afterall Glenn Beck can command 100k to listen to his crapola of a speech - the government didn't force banks to issue loans to poor people... banks did it out of greed.... they made too much money from it... and risked nothing due to their structured investment vehicles (SIVs) i.e. pass it off to foreign investors...

I'M DONE... NO NEED TO SAY ANYTHING ELSE.

GOOD LORD, the IGNORANCE.

The great majority of Americans, those who actually support themselves and don't salivate over the government tit, never wanted this health care fiasco. The arrogant administration never listens to what the American people want until it's way too late. (ELECTION TIME) Then they hope a few slogans and some smoke and mirrors will dazzle the voters like in '08. Sorry boys, not this time. First item on the new congress agenda...stop the damage being caused by the Obama administration. (damage control) like containing a fire you can't quite extinguish. Then after we get a REAL president in office in 2012, we can begin to actually repair the damage caused by the community organizer. It may take several years to get things straight again. But I always have hope.

the reason why people perseve the republicans to be the boogie man is because they were in charge when all this mess happened. 01-06 was the fuel to what happened from 07 till present.

we can't get passed that.

People lose their homes because they can't afford them. Maybe they don't have a job, and haven't saved their money for a rainy day when they might need money. Maybe, they bought more house then they could afford or didn't have good credit (gotta thank the dems for that...loosening restrictions happened on Clinton's watch) There are a thousand maybes... The fact is, people lose their homes because they can't afford them...and you think the American people should keep you in your home when you're not paying for it? You must be a dem...

As for healthcare being affordable - what a crock! You must be unemployed and gonna get it free, compliments of me. I sat at my work's insurance meeting the other day and listened as the insurance gentleman said that Obama really hadn't done any to make my insurance more affordable (19%). But hey, as long as you're happy, I'm sure all the other folks out here in cyber-space like paying for you, too.

Yes, because after 6 months, it then becomes we hard workers who are paying your welfare benefits. By the way, you don't pay into unemployment, your owner does. This just in.... we can't afford to have non producers collecting taxpayer money for 2 yrs. If you don't have a job, it's because you don't want one!!!! Your enablers are going to get slaughtered and you will see your entitlements go away so I suggest you do something with your life. What does your family think of your lazy asses. Do something to support them YOURSELVES!!!

Guess I am not poor or ignorant so I don't qualify to be a Democrat. I guess when you sign up for a mortgage you can't pay back for whatever reason, it is the bank's fault. Those evil banks actually wants to make a profit off of your mortgage. That health care reform really is keeping health care costs down like promised. If the health care reform act was so great, why are so many Democratic representatives running away from it now. It is because over 60% of American people want it repeal and they see the polls. Frankly, if you are only looking at a 19% increase, you are the lucky one. If companies are going to have to insure pre-existing conditions, someone is going to have to pay for it. Nothing, including health care, is free.

I encourage everyone to check out the site realclearpolitics.com. When using their final averages right before the election as a predictor, they have a pretty high accuracy rate. Right now in the Senate, they have the Democrats leading 48-46, with 6 tossups. With no tossups, they rate it as 51-49 Democrats. It is interesting to see the trends over time of these races. Most of them are gradually sneaking the Republican direction.

IADude, the problem with your figures is that we will have two definite independents in Stephens and Liebermann. Stephens almost always votes with the Dems while Liebermann floats depending on the issue. So a 51-49 break is factually and actually impossible.

KeepN it Real: It is not only the bank's faul (I do blame them), but it is also the greedy real estate folks who pimped you and millions of others a house they knew you should not buy, just so they could get the percentage they receive. Never, and I mean never use a realtor, they are almost as slimey as they health insurance CEO's. Want a good house, you can find them all day long and buy them from the owner - both of you do much better, and don't worry, if you do qualify for a real loan (not that mess that changes the interest rates like most of us change underwear) they won't approve anything that is not safe for you and your family.

Seriously? When someone pointed out in their comment that everyone else was jumping to conclusions about you, I realized that person was right, and it definitely wasn't fair to accuse you of "playing the victim". BUT I WILL NOT ALLOW A PERSON TO HOLD THEMSELVES AS A VICTIM WHEN THEY INVESTED IN SOMETHING THEY COULD NOT AFFORD!!! How dare you diminish your responsibility and blame others, whether they be bankers, republicans, whoever! Yes, I'm sure greed was involved when that loan was extended, but that greed took place on both sides! Don't ignore the fact that you were greedy for something you couldn't afford. And for that reason, both you and the bankers should pay the consequences of your choices, whether good or bad, with favor being extended to neither. But nobody else is responsible for your choices, those are yours alone. Please, rather than blaming the bank, make it YOU who thinks about your family before making such a decision.

Whether it be your health care, mortgage, education, etc. What is next free autos because you need an auto to go to work so someone needs to buy them one. Guess I was raised to work hard and take care of myself. Someone else should pay for what they want whether it be Obama, the banks, corporations as long as it is free to them. They complain about supposed Republican greed. But who is the greedy one who wants everyone else to pay for them. Just look at the Stimulus spending. Just a giant giveaway to Democratic supporters.

              Henry,

Do you know why Henry lost his home? do you know how judgemental you sound? and do you know that most judgemental folks eventually end up in situations of those they judge?

Do you believe in Jesus Christ? Do you believe in Allah? Do you believe that corporations can be in positions where they take advantage of the common man? Do you know your left from right?

These are questions you should ask yourself next time before you post.... If you do these things, I guarantee that you'd be a better person. Have a good day Sir.

              Tunde,

The boat goes both ways. Henry may have been harsh in his comments, and could have been softer, but with that being the case, I would say that he did exactly as you recommend he does. Having good judgment does not make one judgmental. Warning a person to protect them from harmful decisions is a good thing to do. Corporations can take advantage of the common man, just as the common man can take advantage of the corporations and the people who run them. It's not just money that runs the problem in the world, it's moreso pride and greed which know no bounds, whether rich or poor. Henry, while jumping to conclusions in specifics, is completely right about it being wrong to blame others for one's own choices, and completely within his right and duty (to God, Allah, or whatever name you want to use) to warn, protect, and help his neighbor (although it could have been in softer tones). I thank you for your concern and desire to help him, but I also thank Henry for his concern of KeepN's beliefs and claims.

The bank mortgage system with sub prime loans was set up under the direction of the Clinton White House under the Equal House legislation. It really hit a head after 2006 when the Democratic Congress save guarded against every effort to reform it. Don't blame McCain for what Barney Frank and Chris Dodd did.

Why don't you man up and take responsiblity for own actions. It must be tough when you get up every morning and look for someone or something to blame for your problems. we can have a new name for it-how about Obamasyndrome?

You clearly haven't a clue about the costs associated with delivering health care. You are only concerned with what you have to pay out of your own pocket - that is called the price you pay. That $30 co-pay is what you pay. The rest has to come from somewhere.

TRR, I have to agree with you. Manchin has been good for WV and especially to the coal miners families that lost loved ones. I'm sure that everyone doesn't agree but that is their business. If all the registered Dems. of our state come out and vote, we will be in good shape.

Union Baby: Do you really want Ned Ray's son as the next governor? I am not a Haslam fan, but he has to be better than a McWhorter. At least Haslam has business acumen (Pilot Oil) and experience as an executive (Mayor of Knoxville).

The Party in power during challenging times is always going to take a hit in the mid-terms.

I do believe this trend will continue in 2010, but NOT on the landslide scale that some polls TODAY would indicate.

The GOP is nothing more than a Social Conservative movement and has not been a Fiscal Conservative Party in 50 years. These Tea Party Candidates that did well in GOP Republican primaries WILL be seen for the idiots they are when votes are being cast by folks that are not part of the radical GOP base.

JUST look at number 8, Harry Reid who is SO weak the democrats should have ran a serious option against him in the Nevada primaries. The GOP should have been able to pick a name out of the phone book to beat this guy, right? Yet the radical base whackos of the Nevada GOP went out of their way to elect Sharron Angle. There is no way this hate spewing bimbo is going to win this seat. IF she does we need to resume our old nuclear testing program in Nevada.

It's a pity because I would select the candidate over the party.

Feingold I would keep. He is one of the independents in the Senate.

Castle I think would be a good choice in Delaware.

Florida - Anybody but Crist. Changes more often than the weather.

CA, NV, IL, PA - can we just leave the seats open? All 8 candidates suck or are scary.

Don't know enough about AK, CO, IN.

Upset prediction. McMahon wins in Connecticut.

It's a sad state of affairs when Russ Feingold, one of this country's best senators, is in trouble this year. Feingold ought to be the benchmark for other civil servants.

Meanwhile, complete nincompoops like Angle, Toomey and Rand Paul stand to impose their unique brand of crazy on this country. With senators like those three we might as well go whole hog and put the great refudiator in the White House (she'd probably quit after the first year, so no biggie).

It is a big relief when the Russ Feingolds get purged form politics. Nothing like the will of the people to have a chance to fire a few politicians. After all, it will be the people letting the politicians know their will. If Feingold has been good at his job, he should have nothing to worry about.

It may be premature to say which seats go to anyone, regardless of party. More clarity, if there is any to be had, will probably be available about two weeks away from the general election.

Hey all here is a partial line up if the dopes of nope gain control, from Think Progress.

REPORT: Overview Of House Committee Chairmen In A GOP-Controlled 112th Congress
With less than two months until the midterm elections, all eyes are on what a Speaker Boehner would look like if Republicans take back the House. Just as important, though, are those GOPers who would head the House committees. Republicans have vowed that House committee chairmen like these will see their power increase if their party returns to power. With that in mind, it’s worth asking: Who are the House Republicans who would control national legislation in the 112th Congress?

A new report from ThinkProgress takes a closer look. The potential committee and subcommittee chairmen aren’t your run-of-the-mill House Republicans. Rather, those who could be in charge of our nation’s laws are the GOP’s right-wing extremists. Of the 10 right-wing extremists we profiled, eight have voting scores of 95 percent or higher from the American Conservative Union, seven are stimulus hypocrites, four are members of the Tea Party Caucus, and one is even a birther.

Those would control the House committees and subcommittees also may include:

                              – A Judiciary chairman, Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX), who has hinted at impeaching President Obama

                              – Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI), who opposes the existence of the global warming committee he would chair

                              – The subcommittee that controls monetary policy would be headed by Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX), who has called paper money “nothing short of counterfeiting”

                              – Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX), who apologized to BP during the oil spill for a $20 billion “shakedown,” would control national energy policy

Click here to download a pdf of our report.

Explore the profiles of these right-wing extremists and decide for yourself: do you want these men in charge come January 2011?

Update In addition, eight of the ten committee chairmen we profiled are funded by the right-wing billionaire Koch Brothers

No need to impeach the fool...just fight him on his socialist agenda till the clock runs out. This renders him pretty much impotent, and makes whatever he tries to say in a speech pretty much just a joke.

Why is it when a new party tries to run against the Dems or Reps some of you feel threatened and go on the attack against them? Do you really think the Dems and the Reps have been doing a good job for us and have our best interest at heart? It is about "their party" and not us and benefiting financially. Now I know there are few in both parties that actually do care and try to do good but the problem is there are not enough of them. AND if you keep electing them to office they evenutally turn bad.

Why is it the far left moonbats continuously paint ANYONE who ISN'T fellating Obama as a racist, bigot, moron, anti-American, etc??? Is it because they have no other argument, other than to dismiss? And this forum is NOTORIOUS for the far left to stroke themselves. They complain CONSTANTLY about ONE NEWS CHANNEL! I don't hear anyone on here that has a differing opinion blasting YOU for watching MSNBC... You have the right to do so. Then there is that lovely little peach Bev from Chicago. I am pretty sure she has a serious case of Tourettes, because she simply CANNOT reply or post anything without including Glenn Beck or Fox News (Noise as she calls it.) Why she has such disdain for either of the two is bemusing to me... Gee, if she hates them (there is that liberal tolerance we hear so much of again) so much, why does she even give it any thought? Hmmm..

Regardless of your beliefs or your party affiliation, election night in Nov. will be an interesting time to watch. The dreaded days to watch the media will be the election night and the following week with every clueless talking head giving their interpretation of the meaning of the election and it does or does not relect on the Obama administration. It will be a good week for Netflix.

Election night in Nov. makes the politicians listen to the will of the voting public. Nothing like telling a politician, "Your Fired" to let them know that what they thought was best for the public may have not been what the public wanted. And as an elected representativeof a district they should be listening to the voice of their district, not the voice of the party. Sometimes it is good the kick out sitting incumbents to let the others know that they could be next.
