In Alaska, Murkowski trails Miller

From msnbc.com's Vaughn Ververs:
Incumbent GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski was thought to be a big favorite coming into Tuesday's primary against Sarah Palin-backed challenger Joe Miller. But with over half the vote in, Miller holds a slight lead over the incumbent, 52%-48% with a little over 2,000 votes separating the two. The race is seen as partly a test of Tea Party strength and partly a continuation of the grudge match between former governor Palin and the Murkowski family.

Palin defeated Gov. Frank Murkowski in the GOP primary just four years ago by campaigning on a platform of anti-corruption. Part of her argument was based on the fact that Murkowski, a sitting U.S. Senator when he won the governorship, appointed his daughter Lisa to replace him in Washington. The family feud has not abated since, with Palin taking an active role in supporting Miller's campaign -- endorsing early, encouraging Tea Party activism and recording robo-calls in the final days of the campaign.

Alaska is traditionally a state that values congressional representation, and especially, seniority. It was the latter argument that Murkowski made in the final days of this primary campaign.

Still a ways to go but one to watch through the wee hours.

*** UPDATE *** With all but nine precincts reporting early Wednesday, Miller's lead stands at just under 2000 votes.

When will we know the winner? The Anchorage Daily News reports this morning:

The final results of the race won't be known for over a week. The Alaska Division of Elections said over 16,000 absentee ballots were requested and as of Monday night 7,600 had been returned. The first count of absentees will be next Tuesday and there will be two subsequent counts as the absentee votes trickle in on Sept. 3 and on Sept. 8.

Wow, this is amazing. Imagine if Miller wins the primary and the general. It's the end of Alaska's gravy train. Sounds like Palin has been veddy veddy bad for Alaska. Ha!

Check the financials on Palin...She donated $300,000 to Murkowsky's campaign and then endorsed the opposition on Facebook. She's playing two ends against the middle just for her own political safety.

Where do you get such nonsense? She can't donate that much even if she were a corporation. You're just another Palin hater. Why? The lady from Alaska is one of the few honest people we have.

why does the media insist on keeping palin in the spotlight? the other day one morning show was blathering on about her supposed influence, then showed how candidates she's backed have only won 2 out of 7 races so far. how is this considered any kind of real influence, not to mention, where's the data showing those 2 won because of her?

Palin is everything the Left fears. A conservative woman who is not afraid to speak out against the Lamestream Liberal media and to endorse who SHE believes in NOT who Barrack, Nanny Pelosi or Hairy Reed want to control. The hypocrisy of the Left is obvious when the Liberally challeged womens organizations cringe when they see an INDEPENDENT woman emerge and confront their submissive nature. Palin, right or wrong, has the cajone's to stand up to anyone, too bad our empty suit POTUS doesn't. She is not afraid of being wrong, she is afraid of being manipulated like Liberal women are. As much as the Liberal bra-burners of yesteryear want you to believe they are so liberated they are no more than puppets in the Progressive collective.

For as much as the Liberal Progressives want the country to "believe", they are doing NOTHING to "change" Washington! Their idea of change is for everyone else to change to their failing and incompetent policies and agendas. How can anyone believe in Hope and Change when the same people who have created this mess for the past 4 years (time Democrats have controlled Congress) continue in their positions of power. No effort by the Liberals has been put forth to make us believe they truly want to change Washington other than forcing unpopular legislation down our throats and ignoring our needs.

Love them or hate them, the Tea Party IS becoming a loud and proud voice in America. I'm amazed at how many of my neighbors and friends, who may not actually be at rallies or events, are aware of and support the Tea Party ideology. This is at least a step in the right direction as far as purging our government of the corruption We The People have allowed for the past decades and have finally awoken from the political hibernation we've been in. Yes, America has been asleep at the wheel for too long regarding our politicians. We were too preoccupied with our individual selfish needs rather than watching our government. We let down our guard and the Washington political machine deceived us.

Our Constitution is the Supreme Law of the land and provides us with our Rights but our Declaration of Independence instructs us what to do when our government betrays us.

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

For 80 years our government has methodically created despotism and we have allowed it to happen as we were told over and over that it is in our best interest. Recently the Democrats have taken it to another unsustainable level by ignoring not only the Republicans ideas but more importantly OUR opinions. This can no longer be allowed. Passage of TARP, the $timulu$, Health Care Redistribution of Wealth, Financial Impair Bill, the Illegal Alien issue and the general mistrust in our government is no ones but our own fault. It is time to start cleaning up our mess. Tea Party supporters at least have the courage and resolve to initiate TRUE change vs the same ole, same ole the Democrats insist on. Their Hope and Change are just words on a bumper sticker. They have become far Left driven Liberal Progressive zealots with only one purpose, power and control of the collective.

The obvious fear the Liberal Progressives have of losing the good ole boys in their party just exposes their inability to think and act independently and rationally. Time is upon us to rid ourselves of this epidemic in Wasington and elect people who are proud of our Constitution, believe in fiscal responsibility, embrace rather than demonize free market principles and most importantly return us all to American exceptionalism rather than apologizing for our accomplishments

Please.....Palin is a "mouthpiece". If you observe and give this a little critical thought you can see this easily. She cares not WHAT is said. Listen to what she says about other women she perceives to be successful. All she talks about is their ability to "speak out". It's never about the content. I can walk down the street and quickly find 10 women who can get in front a crowd and get them excited.

This is called "5 miles wide and 1/2 an inch deep". And it doesn't indicate any kind of "success".

Liberals....afraid.....I don't think so. Our PROGRESSIVE nature shows we're not really afraid of anyone. Call me a snob...but I'm never afraid of anyone I perceive to be a nitwit and a knucklehead, i.e. not as smart as me. If there weren't a gazillion people like her, reality tv wouldn't be so successful.

Truth be told....there's a lot of us who are probably just jealous of the fact that she's came from nowhere and amassed a little fortune. We'd probably all like to have the cash but certainly aren't willing to put ourselves out there to earn it has Palin has.

Palin = tenacious - yes, legislating - no.

    RogueUSA

    ROTFLMAO!!!!!!

How are you my good friend? I see you're still trying to break the will of the programmed Liberals. I fear it is a lost and futile cause, but I give you props for trying. You at least offer valid arguments vs their incessant and incoherent babbling of "Progressivism". Most of them have NO idea that the origin sprouted from our great but misguided Teddy Roosevelt. Unfortunately then it became bastardized by Wilson, FDR and Johnson. The groundwork that Teddy had laid has long since been turned into the dependent and lack of responsible thought ideology shell we see today.

They imagine themselves as visionaries yet have no concept of history and the traitorous manipulation Progressivism has become with the likes of Alinsky, John Bernard Shaw and Cloward-Piven. The barrage of "Bread and Circuses" Progressives throw at their supporters is not only wrong it's condescending but they don't even realize it due to their collective brainwashing. The "guns vs butter model" is their mantra yet they cower at any threat to their dependence of thought and reason. Progressives will argue they are for the middle class yet offer no rational manner to create the commerce necessary to maintain their desired standard of living which they have allowed to bloat beyond sustainability. Their disgust with Capitalism is simply to lay down subserviently to elitist government figures who don't know them or even care if they are able to support themselves as long as the bureaucracy is maintained and expanded, at their cost.

So the Progressive will never accept responsibility or try anything new, they will berate and demonize anyone who attempts to truly "change" because it isn't THEIR irrational change. The fear of the Tea Party and the movemet it has become is evident in their childish berating with adolescent name-calling and denouncement of emerging agitators of their inferior collectivism. Barracks failures continue to mount yet they blindly force feed themselves his repeating accusations and self depracating mantras that it's everyone elses fault but his. This is the recipe, alog with all the failing indicators, that this administration has no idea what it is doing.

But hey, they get to "hope" for more "change" as the rest of us wrestle with reality of how to recreate the once proud and envied economic, social and moral nation that, as Reagan so eloquently proclaimed,,,,

We are indeed, and we are today, the last best hope of man on earth.

As a Progressive, you don't believe ANYBODY is as smart as you; and you think you are so much smarter than us non-progs that you think you can make decisions not only for your life, but for everybody else's life, too.

On the contrary, I want legislators to stay out of my personal business. I want them to keep religion out of government. I want them to quit worrying about what everyone is doing in their bedroom and with whom. I want them to stay out of my doctors office. I want equal treatment for all of their constituents. I want them to UNDERSTAND the Constitution and use it to guide them in their responsibilities.

MOST important - I want this for EVERYONE, not just myself.

What makes me smart is not wanting anyone to try and legislate morality. I want governance. Isn't that what everyone wants - instead of wasting everyone's time with all of this other rubbish? As a progressive I think those who want to bog us down in the other issues are just plain dumb.

Also she forced oil companies to drill rather than just sit on oil leases. Oil is what the whole flap was about...

Not only is this true, but Dems and Palin actually worked hand in hand to make it happen- Big oil lost its stranglehold on Alaska because of that alliance; but it should be pointed out: a)That is why the republican party itself attacks Palin, and b)Murkowski the daughter was only senator through an appointment by her father. In this day and age. Can u believe it?? Any Alaskan who thinks themselves independant and free should be ashamed for voting for a hereditary title: Murkowski, Senator, ad infinitum

While I shouldn't be amazed that the Neanderthals salivate over the functional idiot Palin...I do have one question..if Palin is SO powerful that we on the left tremble at the very sound of her name, why does she refuse to go on any show that will ask her questions where she will have to demonstrate some hard knowledge? Seems to me that someone who considers herself a "mama grizzly" would demand to be on all media. Or is she just a coward, and there are those of you out there that are easily manipulated? And by the way, do her spawn EVER go to school?

The problem with Palin is that she quit her term as Governor. Is she going to do the same if she does get into a higher office. She complained about Obama being a celeb and her she quits as Gov and writes a book, tries to get a talk show, and looks for any media outlet she can. So who is the real celeb. She is out for the spotlight and money. I don't see she is out there for the people like she promised she would do when she quit. I am Repub but hope she keeps this up and it just helps the Dems. The Repubs aren't the ones I know anymore they would rather ruin Obama and not care what it does to the American people. They lost and we still can't get rid of them.

ART DECO: Well lets see the Repubs and Tea parties have called Obama a Socialist, Nazi, like Hitler, Anti-Christ. And who was it that defended the Senator that called Obama the N word oh yea Palin defended her Dems didn't call tea party, tea baggers. That started on FOX News and at the Tea party rallies. Palin gets all up in arms about the media and Trig but she is the one who brought her family into the limelight and used them. Like when you are in court and you open up a new line of questioning the opposition has the right to continue that line of questioning because you opened the door. So she can't be all upset when she opened the door.

The Gays, Immigrants, etc know where all this started and the Repubs won't get there votes come Nov or 2012. The Repubs better leave the old ways behind and realize this country is going to be more diversified. So they better quit the hate, the fear, etc if they want to survive. It didn't work in the 60's and everyone wants to go back to the 50's because it was so good. I am white male and that is who it best served then. I want a country that serves everyone no matter what race, orientation, etc. that is the constitution.

Also why is Glenn Beck and his group doing the rally in DC on MLK's I have a Dream Speech anniv and a map was put out that told them to avoid areas where more blacks, gays, etc are listed as dangerous. FOX news and Beck, and the rest aren't racists. yea right.

How does every news article get comments on Obama? It is amazing. There are going to be tons of history books on America in the early 21st century...and NONE of it is going to be positive about race relations in America.

And whose fault would that be? Those whose EVERY reaction to ANY and ALL criticism of Obama and his policies are met with accusations of "racist, racist, racist", when that has absolutely nothing to do with peoples' criticism and comments. Those people make more of Obama's race than ever occurs to his critics. Our concerns go far deeper than the color of his skin...seems that's not the case with his worshippers. To those tunnel visioned, close minded people, it's ALL about his race.

Bush's opponents used arguments based on fact. Obama's opponents lie, Hawaii has supplied birth records ad nauseum, he is a Christian, however conservatives call him every name, religion, and political belief under the sun. Why? No other reason but race. Where were you when Bush lied about WMD's, yellowcake, didn't get OBL, didn't rebuild NO, deregulated everything in sight, bailed out AIG, tortured & lied about it, got Scooter off, released Plame's name, fired JD employees illegally on political grounds, turned record surpluses into record deficits, and gave huge, unneeded tax breaks to the wealthy & corps , which has never been shown to produce 1 job?

Why that's just unamerican. So now all we get from the republicans is a constant stream of lies and hate. Oh, but is not racism, oh no, it's constructive criticism. Yea, right.

And that fuzzy math - who would have thunk it, folks finally caught on that ole georgie did not have the balls to add the cost of two wars (one we never should have gone to - Iraq, not my business, not my dog, not my fight - one we needed to be in on Sept. 12th in Afghanistan which was cut short cause you know - "He tried to kill my daddy" logic). Wouldn't it be quite a hoot if the good folks in Alaska really paid ole sarah back and elected the Democrat? Why, yes indeed, it most surely would! wink, wink.

I hope Murkowski is beaten. It is time to do away with the idea of political royal families in this country. Children learn corrupt practices from their political parents and then come in to office already knowing how to game the system. At least with political novices it takes a couple of year before they become expert crooks and frauds.

The two people that I was most sick of seeing in the media are now going to do a show together, Sarah Palin and Kate Gosselin. I'm not sure which one bugs me the most. People have certainly been taken in by Palin's folksy baloney. With the new book coming out soon, we will be deluged once more by her book tours. Two books within a year by a woman who couldn't recollect what newspapers she read. What is this country coming to? After observing them both. I wonder how much time they spend with their children. Just curious.

I don't care for Palin because of her past and present, she is a nut job who will not lead this county in anything. she has her own style (wink, wink) to convey her thoughts because she can't use correct English to do so. Anyone who thinks of her as a leader needs to sit back and just watch her without the "rose colord glasses" they blame the libs for using. Isn't ist socialistic to give oil money to the people of alaska on a yearly basis though they did nothing to obtain it? Alaska has done that for years and I don't hear the GOP grumbling about that? She quit her job with the excuse of not wanting to spend the states money to defend herself.....what hogg wash. I don't really care who wins this Alaska seat......right or left, they all are corrupt eventually, doing what they want for themselves. I've never known a poor politician.

              You know Alaska well MisterG.

I have about a dozen friends who have lived in AK for most of their adult lives. Their political differences are something that most folks in the lower 48 are not aware of. (notice I said "not aware of" instead of "don't understand") It would be a culture shock for a legislator to move from AK to the lower 48 and visa versa. I can't disrespect their desire to stay as far away from the grid as possible.

That said, accepting $$ from Washington is a complete disconnect from what the majority of citizen would LIKE. However, their ecomony is suffering....their politicians don't appear to be clever enough to figure out ways to avoid the dole. Talk about a rock and hard place!

Interesting how after all that noise teabaggers made about "cleaning house" and getting rid of incumbents, 98% of incumbents have won in the primaries.

Ever since Ronald Reagan gained power 30 years ago Americans have been easy to impress and scare. I'm glad that's not the case anymore. The Powers That Be played everyone like a violin and had a good laugh at it.

I hope that era is gone and America can find its true voice once again.

When you talk about "east to impress", look at the job Obama did with the American voters. Whatever he said, they believed. Talk about being played like a voilin.

Nothing has changed on either side. We need Citizens to draw a line in the sand and take the country back from the politicians and political parties. They're more interested in doing what;'s right for the party rather the American people.

Why is it that Palin is regarded by many as a politician? Honest? She found a nice niche as an ENTERTAINER, in which she can make a great deal of MONEY. Whether you like or detest Limbaugh, Beck, and Ann Coulter, they are exactly what they are and make no pretense of being otherwise.

As a liberal democrat I can tell you my dislike of Sarah PAlin has nothing to do with her alleged love of America or her appearance. It is based on her brazen opportunistic view of politics, her willingness to pander to America's bigots (She was one of the people who led the charge in suggesting that Obama's healthcare legislation included death panels and other such lies), and her decision to walk away from her job as governor midway through her terms because she was bored with it. Those of you that think this constitutes leadership clearly are determined to set a pretty low standard. Her values are those of the moronic tea party crowd that would return America to the nine fifties, time when women's reproductive rights were non existance, child and spousal abuse were carried out with impunity, and America's polluters operated with impunity. As far as I'm concerned what is even saddder than Palin's stone age views is the willingness of America's voters to support her. Still one can never underestimate the stupidity and ignorance of the American people.

I am in Healthcare and the thing is insurance would have had to pay when someone went to there Dr and talked to them about end of life issues (DNR's, etc) which is something they should do. But now because of the Repubs people still have to pay for that and not the insurance company. Yea the Repubs want to help the top 2% Rich people, Insurance Companies, Not the middle class, GP Oil (not a US Company).

It's still a couple of years away. America wake up and stop screaming at each other. The 'elect me for life' politicians love it when we spend all our time fighting amongst ourselves. This gives them the advantage. Both parties are corrupt and power hungry. Right now it's the republicans turn to destroy this president so they can regain power. Once there, the dems will do the same. Let's be americans first, then democrat or republican.
