*** UPDATED 11:29 PM ET *** It's the upset of the night: Rick Scott has defied the latest polls and defeated state Attorney General Bill McCollum, AP has declared.
One wealthy candidate went down earlier, but Scott, who poured in more than $50 million of his own money in the primary, has upended the establishment. With 92% of the vote in, Scott led McCollum 47%-43%.
McCollum and groups aligned with him have spent in the neighborhood of $20 million to $25 million. Polls two weeks ago showed Scott leading, but McCollum appeared to make a resurgence with polls showing him up in the week before final voting. A Scott win could mean good news for Democrat Alex Sink, who has taken the lead in general-election polls as the Scott-McCollum fight has gotten nastier. Sink won the Democratic nod tonight with token opposition.
Sink, 61, is the state's chief financial officer and wife of Bill McBride, who was the Democratic nominee that lost in the gubernatorial race against Jeb Bush in 2002. Sink is also a former Bank of America president for Florida operations.
NBC's Chuck Todd notes this context on Twitter: "If Scott is GOP nominee in #flgov, which Dem GOV candidate will suffer because Sink will need the financial air support from DGA?" and "Getting lots of excited emails from Dems re: #flgov. But don't forget big picture. Scott will spend another $50M; Will cost Dems big money."

I'm going to do all my talking at the polls.
"I'll ever see $50 million in my lifetime, much less have it to toss about to get a job that the pay will not recoup my expenditures."
Sibi, I think it is you who miss the point. What's worse is you have written between the line (intended or not) that there is some scheming going on because no one would invest 50M without getting a retun on that investment. But what if he wants to make a better Florida, what if that is his return on investment. If you have 200M - and the confidence/arrogance to believe you can steer a better future - you have to admit he can afford to look at it that way.
NavyKoz
Wow, you better take off those rose-colored glasses. He had $50 million caused he bilked the government. And you think he wants a "better Florida"? Scheming in politics? As moron Palin would say....you betcha!
It is interesting to note that the democrats in Florida soundly rejected the billionaire Senate candidate that was trying by his way into politics while the republicans embraced the Millionaire that is trying to buy his way into the governor's mansion. It really tells who who the real constituents and priorities are for the Republicans, the rich.
tr, it is actually interesting to note the real truth. Reps threw out the establishment rino in favor of a conservative outsider. Dems rejected a new lib for their established crooked one.
It couldn't have happened to a more deserving guy. Mccollum was a congressman in the orlando area 20 or more years, after his first 2 terms he promised not to run anymore. He joined the Naval reserve to get in line for a seperate pension, forgot his promise only to run for 2 terms. He did nothing to stop the BRAND NEW NAVY TRAINING CENTER from closing costing unknown jobs and buisness to close. He did nothing to assist in getting a Veterans hospital here in orlando. Twice it was proposed and no help or advice from Mccollum. Now 15 yrs later the newest Veterans hospital under construction cost MILLIONS AND MILLIONS of dollars more and is under construction 15 miles farther away from original site and much longer traveling area away for potential users. The closed Navy Base is now full of upscale apartments , condos and buisnisses with very narrow streets and plenty of empty units. Good for property taxes and fees . but not and probably never will be filled up.Badwin Park is the name and if you have a garage you have to be in it ,Garage aprons are part of the streets.and very little parking on narrow streets due to curb mailboxes.all on Mccollums watch. terrible congressman for constituants . He just got payed back.
This country is still in trouble. The question is, is the best way to fix it with people who have little experience, and whose sole approach to issues is to cut spending and lower taxes? Every spending cut is more unemployed. (Remember when 130,000 census jobs were ended? the right blamed Obama for increasing unemployment!) But besides making unemployment worse, no amount of spending cuts alone can hope to balance a $1.4trillion deficit without collapsing our economy and destroying our military and empoverishing our seniors. Meanwhile, tax cuts are what caused this problem! What we need are experienced grown ups in government willing to make tough, unpopular choices. The first step is for us voters to quit our fantasies about cutting spending , cutting taxes, and drop the nonsense about socialism, and focus on the fact that we need to buckle down and make hard choices just like we would in our households - if you're running low, identify the bills you have to pay, cut out the rest, and work some overtime, i.e., do intelligent cuts where possible, and raise taxes, and wait for the national economy to grow slowly out of this mess.
That requires intelligent pragmatists like Obama, not wild-eyed incompetents living in a fantasy land constructed of propagandist nonsense like Scott.
Sci, you sir are an Econ idiot. Every penny spent by DC is taken from our pockets and must be paid back with interest. And I'm not even including the cost we incur because govt spending increases inflation. If we had a balanced budget from DC this year we would have that $1.4T (plus int) in our own pockets. We would reap much more benefit by managing it ourselves than by paying fools like Obama to waste it. When he took office unemployment was 7.2%. It is now 16% (that's the real #, not the BS stat out of DC). All his big spending has done is raise unemployment by 10%. If you think I'm wrong, go talk to employers in your area. They will tell you they have cut people because of the excessive regulation and confiscatory taxation coming from DC.
Jacque, in answer to your question, Scott received the Florida Tea Party's endorsement the day before the primary.
Well, do you still think the tea party is a joke?
I am laughing... :)
Has the cat got your tongue? hehehehe
HEY, this is America, where a man can buy a decent election if he wants to! Just because they say he stole a couple million dolllars doesn't disqualify him from a Republican nomination, jees, what are you , a Communist? And if he wants to hire only fit, cute, white girls, what's wrong with that? When you have that much money, you should get a "special exemption", so you aren't forced to hire fat, ugly minority women!
And don't forget, Mr. Scott "took responsibility" for the problems at HCA, and he wasn't even questioned in the probe (I think they forgot to ask him!), so once you have taken responsibilty, the problem should end right then! So quit bugging him, as it really bothers him when people ask those hard questions, and don't forget, he is just learning how to dodge questions, so cut him some slack.
Actually it wasn't Rick Scott who financed his campaign, as his wife actually donated the money, so it's not like HE bought the nomination, it was a birthday present that she promised him, so there!!
I hope she has enough money left to purchase the actual election, as that would be a shameful waste of money to just win the nomination and then lose the election. Hey, don't forget, he also added jobs to the economy while campaigning, like the "Rick's Chicks" he hired to attend his rallys and cheer for him (I know what you're thinking, ..............................just because they were fit, cute and white is only a coincidence!).
Anyway, he is probably going to wipe the stage with Alex Sink, because she is a WOMAN, and what do they know? Just because she has some "made-up" government job (what the hell does a CFO do anyway)? She probably doesn't even have enough money to even buy any influence, so what can she do for Florida? As Governor, he should know how to embezzle enough funds to get our economy movin, and that's what this country needs right now! We don't need no stinkin stimulis package.
And what about his health care crap? We need to "thin the herd" a little anyway, let some of these old and poor people die and make room for the rich. We need to continue those Bush tax cuts for the rich too, dammit, how can a guy buy an election or a Senator if they're payin taxes all the time?
Oh well, I can't take it anymore, I'm takin my Rolls Royce and drivin it off the bridge (Honey, call the reporters and Coast Guard and let them know, this could be a great photo op!)
Signed,
Dick Scott
gary 302, you are a misinformed jackass. keep watching fox news, so when they come for you, dont be surprised.
All of you obama sheep should wake up and realize that we are headed toward being a 3rd world country because obama hates America and everthing it stands for just ask pelosi and the the other traitors that side with him and besides ask about his history and the company he keeps
I am appaled by the ignorance in this country, more specifically in Florida where a good deal of the population is still living in the times of ole...wake up people!! If you want to put crooks & frauds in office, then you have have no right to complain about the state of affairs in this country!!!!!
Republicans, except for the rich republicans who clearly know what they are doing (getting an ever bigger slice of the pie) are stupid. The question now is, who is stupid, stupider, stupidest? Candidates: The Texas School Board, Alaskans, or Floridians? Right now, I am championing Floridians. This guy, Ricky Scotty, agreed to a debate with his opponent. About two hours before start time, Ricky bailed. He sent his mother. Who said a few words, then also bailed. Then, a couple days before the primary, he ran a radio ad stating that he loved his family and therefore you (Republicans) should vote for him. And this guy, Ricky Scotty, was CEO of the healthcare company that stole more money from Medicare and Medicaid than any other - or at least any other that has been caught. Ricky skated. He did so by claiming he didn't know what was going on. He was probably too busy counting his money and loving his family to worry about where the money was coming from. So the Florida republicans have nominated a man who is either a thief or who is a clueless dolt. Or is he--- how clueless is being clueless about something from which you make hundreds of millions? Well, I'll be charitable - thief or idiot. After all, he sounds like an idiot.... And the ballad of Ricky Scotty continues.
