Upset of the night (until Miller): Scott wins GOP gubernatorial nomination

*** UPDATED 11:29 PM ET *** It's the upset of the night: Rick Scott has defied the latest polls and defeated state Attorney General Bill McCollum, AP has declared.

One wealthy candidate went down earlier, but Scott, who poured in more than $50 million of his own money in the primary, has upended the establishment. With 92% of the vote in, Scott led McCollum 47%-43%.

McCollum and groups aligned with him have spent in the neighborhood of $20 million to $25 million. Polls two weeks ago showed Scott leading, but McCollum appeared to make a resurgence with polls showing him up in the week before final voting. A Scott win could mean good news for Democrat Alex Sink, who has taken the lead in general-election polls as the Scott-McCollum fight has gotten nastier. Sink won the Democratic nod tonight with token opposition.

Sink, 61, is the state's chief financial officer and wife of Bill McBride, who was the Democratic nominee that lost in the gubernatorial race against Jeb Bush in 2002. Sink is also a former Bank of America president for Florida operations.

NBC's Chuck Todd notes this context on Twitter: "If Scott is GOP nominee in #flgov, which Dem GOV candidate will suffer because Sink will need the financial air support from DGA?" and "Getting lots of excited emails from Dems re: #flgov. But don't forget big picture. Scott will spend another $50M; Will cost Dems big money."

Why do people pay so much money to get elected? There has to be a reason...and I suspect that reason has NOTHING to do with helping the public.

Phil, good question. Harry Reid had the audacity to brag about planning to spend over 24 million dollars to keep his seat. And our current president backed out of his pledge to only use federal funds in his campaign for election when he realized that he could get big donations from Wall Street, the insurance companies, big pharma. The left and the media gave him a pass on breaking his pledge. Using mass amounts of money to buy an office must be okay for some but not for others.

Gary: Allow me to point it out: "The left and the media gave him a pass on breaking his pledge."

You don't speak for the left, and your partisan message clearly denotes your anti-media bias. The left didn't "give him a pass", the only alternative for the left would be Grampa McCain and the crazy Wasilla Lady. Not legitimate choices, in other words. America made the right choice in 2008; but the economic problems that started before Obama became president may unseat him.

acidrain, let's try this again. Obama campaigned on hope and change. He would be different. HE would not take money from lobbyist. Hesaid he was going to only use federal campaign funds so he would not be owned by special interest. That was his pledge, his promise to his base. When it came time to chose, he went for the money, which had ties to the insurance companies, big pharma, etc. So besides being money that average people kick in it also was money kicked in by special interest. But after breaking his pledge, no one from the left stood up in front of a camera to say it was wrong. So,acidrain, you are saying the ends justify the means, as long as it's your guy? He can start down the road of selling his administration as long as he is in office?

I'm inclined to agree with Gary. I'm disillusioned by Obama to the same degree I became disillusioned with GWB. I like to think we all want to believe what our prospective leaders tell us they will and won't do; I like to think we all want to believe that they adhere to an actual set of core principles whether to their benefit or detriment when the situation changes, but that isn't the case.

More than simply blaming the left, however, I think it more reasonable to blame American media overall for the complete lack of journalistic integrity we're privy to on a daily basis. I am parched of the need to find a credible source with no clear political bias - God knows I can't trust Fox News anymore than I can trust the New York Times or CNN.

Gary,

Perhaps you could have pointed out an equal (if not bigger) number of republicans that are sleeping in Wall Street's bed. That may have given your initial post more credibility. And your institutionalized comment about the "left and the media" just sunk your argument completely, especially in the wake of the Fox Propaganda Network donating $1 million to the republican governor's association.

Like I've said in the past, until the media reports that Obama is a Kenyan-born, communist, muslim-sympathizing terrorist operative, they will be continually labeled "liberal" by the conservatives, when in fact, they are owned by right-wing conglomerates such as GE, Viacom, Time-Warner, Newscorp...

MBrown – Perhaps you could have pointed out that the media have been all over Rupert’s donation to the Republicans but there was virtually no coverage of GE, Time Warner, or Microsoft’s contributions to President Obama. In fact, they were all on his list of top donors, contributing over $1.9 million dollars to Obama. So much for right-wing conglomerates!

The one-sided coverage of Rupert’s contributions along with the fact that all of the companies I listed have direct ownership/partnership ties to major media networks only solidifies Gary's argument that most major news organizations support Democrats.

Rick Scott. I think Scott is the guy who, while he was in charge of a health care firm, paid the largest fraud settlement ever to the government for the patients he bilked out of thousands of dollars. Let's hope the last of the votes gives McCollum the win.

It was Columbia HCA and it was $300 Million in Medicare fraud. He recently sold another company, Solantic, to a large hospital to get out from under dozens of EEOC actions for having a "young, fit and white" hiring policy. When it was one Bagger, Birther, Buffon vs. another, money made the difference. When Scott gets the scrutiny he deserves, Floridians will not be duped so easily.

His company (HCA) was fined $1.7 BILLION for Medicaid/Medicare fraud.... Occurring over a decade.... Not just a one or two time deal..... Yet the GOP nominates him.... Can anybody see anything wrong with this? This was your, taxpayer, money...

Rick Scott is the ultimate terrorist, and I mean that in literal terms. If this monster doesn't strike terror into your heart, then the fact that there are people who can AND will vote for this evil, evil man should.

This is not simply about partisanship, this is about the most evil attack ever on America. As surely as they wave the flag, they will destroy everything for which it stands. Fiorina, Whitman, Scott cannot be bothered to vote. Why should they, when they can buy the seats where the levers of power are manipulated? Lazio, McCain - McCain! - and so many more trade on pure fear and mindless hatred.

Folks, you fight fire with fire. Dems, Independents, and Republicans left homeless thanks to this insane right-wing faction had better wake up and crush these terrorists. They are something to fear even more than the jihadists. Ignore them and the price is the loss of your freedom and citizenship in a third-world country.

Ok Amy, I understand what you are saying. Now, where can I send you my bill for the increase in taxes that will happen next year? Under Obama, the bottom rate will jump from 10 to 15%. In my book, that is a tax increase of 50% and, if I remember correctly, the chosen messiah in the White House promised me no new taxes. I guess being consistently correct is all in how you look at it, eh? Maybe it doesn't have anything to do with morals or speaking the truth. So, what is your address that I can send you my bill from your consistently correct messiah?

Amy, no, "most liberal" was assigned by National Journal Magazine, which is itself a left-leaning publication, and the read for DC insiders. When they assign that tag, they mean it as a compliment. Obama wore it proudly then, and has continued in that mode as POTUS. Here's a better definition; Liberal: someone who makes a living by spending everyone elses money. That's what makes the term so widely disdained.

Josephi, Obama is half black and also half white. Who cares. He sucks because of his politics, not the color of his skin. Take off the bigot shades and get a glimpse of reality.

          Maryland republican:

Stop with your silliness. The 10% and 15% rates are darned close to irrelevant when measured against the number that really matters - Adjusted Gross Income. It is the reason Warren Buffett tells us his secretary pays taxes at a higher rate than he does. Theoretically Buffett is at the 35% threshold.

What you have going on isn't even a flash-and-trash-magic show. It's garbage. I was tempted to add, "and you know it.", but you don't. The nominal tax rate is virtually meaningless. You'll whine somewhere else that almost half of Americans pay not income tax. How could that possibly be if the lowest tax rate is 10%?

Chosen Messiah? That is an appellation of the right. Based on the numbers that we see from the right, it was you guys who expected him to heal the country, balance the budget, bring the troops home and all of that by January 21, 2009.

The GOP can always drag out someone being quoted as calling candidate X as "the most liberal whatever". Obama = not the most liberal. Joe- you are wrong. prior to the 2008 election, Obama was rated the 10th most liberal senator, and then was ranked 16th in his final year. I've read each of your posts on this thread and you're full of Fox propaganda garbage. Acidrain has a much clearer and accurate understanding of the issues and that does not surprise me since you're only full of ridiculous talking points.

Screaming "libs libs libs" does not make you an intelligent person. Perhaps if Obama was actually more liberal, we wouldn't have had the insurance companies controlling the outcome of the healthcare legislation which is nothing more than corporate fascism at work.

Maryland Rethuglican - please enlighten us as to what exactly the Republicans have done to fix the problems of our country? 30 years of "trickle down" economics has destroyed our economy; 30 years of shipping jobs overseas has destroyed our job market; 30 years of the Republican machine intentionally glorifying stupidity to get votes (the "keep 'em in the dark and stupid" strategy) has taken its toll on the masses. Unemployment has actually come down under Obama because when he took office the job market was bleeding 500,000 jobs a month. A number of the jobs lost in this recession are never going to come back because a number of companies will not bring the jobs back to this country and will leave them in India, Asia and Europe. For 8 very long years Bush spent more than any other President in history; Ronald Reagan increased the deficit, Bush Sr. INCREASED the deficit; Bill Clinton (a moderate to liberal Democrat) DECREASED the deficit and left the country with a budget surplus when he left office. What is it you can't wrap your stupid little brain around? Obama came into office with a huge mess to clean up and is doing a great job. It took more than 30 years to get us into this mess from the abuses of the aforementioned Republicans and it will take us a while to get us out. A recession this deep will not be fixed in a year or 2. It's going to take time. Obama will prevail and he will be reelected.

I disagree. I am 74 years old, a life long Democrat and my parents before me. I have never been so ashamed of anyone as I am of the majority of the politicians today...starting with Obama...No, I did not vote for him.. I did a write in vote because I believe he is not qualified to be president. He refuses to show his birth certificate...and will not show any school records. His grandmother said she was there in Kenya when he was born. He is also a muslim...and if you doubt that, all you have to do is watch the video of his speech in Cairo..or read the speech. He admitted to the king of saudi arabi that he was muslim. Did you know that the imam our taxpaying dollars are sending around the world says that 9-11 is partly our fault? Did you know that some of his advisers are muslim? Bet you didnt know that there are islamic courts already in the US? Never vote for Democrats no matter what.

The Republicans are just as guilty ....did you know that Dearborn Michigan is 3/4 muslim? They have a muslim sheriff and last week arrested 4 people who did nothing wrong. They were filming an Arab festival , they were not impeding foot traffic or anything else. When the crowd saw they were being arrested, they shouted "Allah Akbar". A man on the other side of the street then shouted "praise Jesus". 1 of the policemen turned to him and told him to shut up.. You can look this up and read it for yourself. The 4 people's cameras were confiscated and still have not been returned. Why have the Republicans not said a word on how the islams are taking over a little at a time? If you want to learn more instead of just burying your head in the sand and calling each other names....go to ....patriotnews1.com....while you are there , read the constitution of the United States of America. you will see some of the constitutional laws that Obama has broken. and he isn't finished yet.

Obama is not a Muslim. Where were you during the campaign when his PREACHER at the CHURH he had been attending FOR TWENTY YEARS was catching flak for some of his comments. Before going to Washington he had been attending christian services regularly for over twenty years. How does that make him muslim.

He refuses to show his birth certificate

The state of Hawai'i has provided his official birth record so many times now that they have recently decided that they will no longer even reply to requests. If he was born in Africa, why the heck would the Honolulu Advisor have a birth announcement for Barack Obama(that is still available on microfishe) from 1961. Are you so remarkably stupid that you somehow believe that somebody in Africa called the paper and arranged a fake birth announcement forty nine years because they knew that one day he would be president.

and if you doubt that, all you have to do is watch the video of his speech in Cairo..or read the speech

I did. You, quite obviously did not. From his speach in Cairo: "I'm a Christian, but my father came from a Kenyan family that includes generations of Muslims."

Exactly what part of "I'm a Christian" do you not understand. Are you really that stupid?

He admitted to the king of saudi arabi that he was muslim

At no time has Barack Obama ever expressed to anyone, let alone King al Saud, that he is a Muslim because he is Christian.

I am not a Democrat, and I did not Vote for Obama. However, the remarkable idiocy that this country has sunk to with regards to this president absolutely frightens me. Never in all of my years did I think that the future of this country was in doubt until now. The extent to to the hallucinary level of stupidity, and regurgitation of absurdity has ereached a level that should scare the crap out of every intelligent (that obviously does not apply to you Betty) person in America regardless of party affiliation, religion, or race.

Barack Obama was born in America, not Africa. He is Christian, not Muslim. Deal with it. Can we now get on to actually solving our problems instead of wasting time on such complete non issues.

Joe.....I have spoken to lots of Florida Republicans who want Dumya back since he doubled the size of the Federal government, allowed illegal immigration to triple and caused a massive recession that has raised our local taxes by 12% to compensate for the destruction of small business.

In short.....Greed Over Patriotism supporters are for larger government, higher taxes and lots more underpaid illegals to take jobs from Americans.

It was Columbia HCA and the amount of Medicare fraud was $300 Million. Richard Scrushy was the guy who was convicted of Medicare fraud at HealthSouth. Both are part of the Greed Over Patriotism economic terrorist conspiracy to drive this country into the arms of the Communist Chinese. Why else spend $100 Million of your criminal proceeds to get elected to office???

Sam Walton must be spinning in his grave.

You "heard" wrong. That is the problem, you "heard it" so it is fact (meaning as it is associated with Scott). The effort to associate what went wrong at HCA (which was wrong) with Scott failed, and it should have failed. Florida voters could see through inuendo straight to the fact.

What upset, POLITICS has no solution(s) it's an empty bucket; and besides who bloodly cares. The story woth listening to today, is Boehner's CALL for Obama's FAILED economic advisers team to ALL be fired, AMEN, and he's absolutely correct. Why? They've failed, in the extreme, and obviously far to significantly to allow them to stay, Still no Boehner has no SOLUTION either, merely a bandaid. What's needed is "supply side" INVESTMENT, to scale, in national NEW technologic infrastructure. That must be based on the NEW economic paradigm the "Integration of Labor(sm)." As ONLY this will create and sustain JOBS and national GROWTH, on a massive scale, that realiizes as its goal a third macro sector of the US economy that is "health and well being services," NOW certain to grow to be larger than "housing and consumer spending" combined. This NEW macro economic model derives from Humanomics(sm) post COLLAPSE of the world economy's old systems of communism and capitalism, as NOW converge to the vacant middle. And this is Yehoshua Ya'acov's "Jerusalem Narrative" descriptive of the NOW emergent new world order that is, absolutely, man and mankind's redemption. It's central organizing principle is "Receiving, to give(sm)," as now defines and delivers its NEW anthropocentric science. Blessings, Yehoshua Ya'acov

What's missing is the strategy to end the war tomorrow and invest in the future of America. But that is unlikely since the Generals are already putting their gear down and intent to move the deadline again. American politics is driven by stupidity, by Politicians telling them to bomb people on another continent will protect America or that having bases around the world. Notice that the Chinese are almost there so why not withdraw and let the Chinese fight the wars and protect the world? American Politicians should protect the borders here, spent the money on infrastructure and development and eventually this crazies from the Tea party will shut down. Nobody want the Tan Man in power, the only think he can stumble is NO.

If the far right were running the economy, we would be at 25% unemployment. Because that is what the free market says is needed to re-establish the norm. But we have instead, a government spending money, so that the bottom of this recession will last longer (maybe three times as long) but the unemployment rate will range around 9-11%. Either way you go you re-establish the norm, it is just how you decide to do it. Voters chose the latter.

yeho, If you were as enlightened as you try to seem, you would realize that capitalism is considered a necessary stepping stone to communism. To those of you who are now scratching your head in disbelief do some research. (Incidentally, there has never been "communism" (and there never will be) and frankly there has never been capitalism (you can't have Social Security nor Medicare or any other like program in capitalism). So we have a hybrid, a lot of capitalism with necessary socialistic aspects necessary to take care of 95% of the people, most of the time. What you espouse is clever bantor, but in reality it is #2 dipped in chocolate.

Gary - Obama's campaign was the first campaign in history that was funded by nearly 65% grass roots donations from ordinary people from all walks of life. Industry donations made up about 35%; these were mostly from environmental companies, some pharmaceutical companies (you could not call them "big pharma") and with very little coming from Wall Street you could not really say he was a shill for big corporations. Wall Street has always been and will continue to be more for the pro-corporate lobby and it will always be about profits before people with this crowd. If we do not begin to bring back manufacturing and start making products in this country, then the American Empire will fall just as the Romans and Greeks did; the demise of fallen empires throughout history has shown with a country ceases to be self sustaining, it fails. So you see - Obama came to power because of the people not because of personal wealth or corporate backing. FYI: this is all public record; check it out for yourself.

You better have some facts to back up your statement. The Affordable Care Act is doing what it was designed to do - bring the cost of health insurance down so that everyone can afford it. Small businesses with benefit greatly from this for their group plans will be much more affordable. Corporations will benefit even more because of their sheer size - as their group plans will help them save millions. Everyone wins. You really need to start backing up your statements with facts.

Actually the right wing tea baggies are a very racist group. The Republicans have cozied up to them and allowed them to take over the party of no - ergo I'm inclined to agree with Tony. There is insidious racism in this country - whether it be against African Americans, Muslims, Hispanics, et al; the masses are ignorant and are frightened by what they don't know. That in itself is not bad - but what is is the fact that they don't want to understand other cultures or ethnicities because of an ingrained sense of xenophobia. "American Exceptionalism" is a myth; how can we be exceptional when there is so much hate and downright stupidity?

The opponents of Scott, had a message, he is a crook.  So, either the voters of Florida are satisfied with a crook, or, they didn't believe the message.  I think Florida voters got it right, the message was wrong, he is not a crook, and those who say so, do not know the real truth, they only spew what they have heard before, by unreliable parties.  Facts and inuendo remain very different, sometimes they become one, and that is when there are problems.  Scott detractors simply want to believe inuendo and not the facts.

It was a closed primary (i.e., only registered Republicans get to vote in the Republican primary). Thus, this was only a fight between Republicans. All the non-GOP Floridians I know (and some GOP'ers who supported McCollum) think that Scott is stone cold crazy. I would say Florida is about to have its first woman governor. Scott will win the far right in November, but that's it.

Sam Walton was pivotal in standing up many Chinese companies (directly or indirectly) that sell a multitude of products to Americans. The purchase of Chinese goods is a completely bi-partisan effort by average Americans who don't think about where a product comes from, but only how much it costs. That is called Capitalism, if you don't like it don't stick around and enjoy it's fruits.

The so-called "fruits" are dying. We will not be able to sustain our own people if we don't begin to bring a lot of that manufacturing back to this country. America as we know it will be gone in 2 to 3 generations if we can't make our own clothes, textiles, electronics, cars, etc. We are beginning to see that the concept of Capitalism is not as effective as it once was. Why? Because it has been bastardized by corporations that put profits before people. The masses have been programmed to believe that cheaper is better. Sam Walton didn't care about quality of goods, he only cared about his bottom line. The Walmart concept has caused a lot of businesses to fail; it forces a lot of people to buy cheap plastic junk that does not last so they keep coming back to replace this junk with more junk. It's a cycle that feeds on itself and will eventually self destruct.

If conservatives and tea partiers are all about "fiscal responsbility", how can they reconcile spending such massive sums in election campaigns? $50 million of his own money? Sure, it's his to spend, but if that's all you're looking at, you're missing the point. I doubt I'll ever see $50 million in my lifetime, much less have it to toss about to get a job that the pay will not recoup my expenditures. So, I have to ask, if he's not getting the money back in pay, how does he get the money back? A guy like that doesn't spend bucks without expecting a multiple return on his investment. In addition to selling fear, these people also sell themselves as being "one of you". I personally don't know anyone with $50mil to flash, much less wave good-bye to.

Maybe he can get his money back the same way Bill Clinton did. Bill has made millions since leaving office. Hillary lent her own money, also millions, to her own campaign which she paid back to herself through campaign donations.
