GOP watch: Laid-back Mitt

"Mitt Romney, having met last weekend in New Hampshire with the staff of his 2008 presidential campaign, is preparing to embark on an aggressive schedule that will take him to more than 25 states in what is seen as a prelude to another possible White House bid," the Boston Globe's Issenberg reports. “Since losing the 2008 Republican nomination, the former Massachusetts governor has sought to reposition himself within the party, de-emphasizing social issues and focusing instead on foreign policy and economic affairs. But the most dramatic re invention may be a stylistic one: Romney is seeking to come across as more easygoing and accessible than the formally dressed, perfectly coiffed, carefully rehearsed candidate of the last campaign."

More: "New Hampshire is the place Romney’s advisers and allies say they see Mitt at rest: a wearer of jeans and driver of a black 2003 Chevy Silverado pickup truck. Some of them are hoping that Romney’s laid-back summer lifestyle will survive Labor Day and endure onto the campaign trail, helping to erase the impression many voters have had of a wealthy candidate almost animatronically focused on winning."

What can Brown do for you? "Sen. Scott Brown is scheduled to spend much of the final three weeks of the August recess on the road raising money for Republican Congressional candidates in a four-state campaign swing that will take him from his home state of Massachusetts to Illinois, California and beyond," Roll Call reports.

Mitt Romney driving around in a pick-up truck dressed in blue jeans and casual shirt cannot change his image to an "ordinary" guy. I suggest Mr. Romney ask Al Gore how that worked out for him. He cannot change who he is simply by changing clothes and trading the fancy car for a pick-up truck.

Romney, like Obama wants to force Americans to buy health insurance from private companies instead of simply extending the Medicade program and increasing the 1.5% witholding tax to pay for it. Neither has a chance of winning in 2012.

Mr. Romney is like other well-to-do, young "retirees" with plenty of money. He doesn't work. He hasn't worked since he left the governor's office in MA in 2006, and hasn't put his "economic expertise" to use since well before that, so he has no reason to wear a business suit or tie. However, across NH he will meet plenty of fellow travelers in pick-ups that are older, creakier and leaking oil -- people who would love to be working, picking up whatever job they could because their retirement isn't as secure as his is. If he tells them (to their face) that Medicare is bad, social security, worker's compensation and unemployment insurance just enable "lazy" people, he won't get far in the presidential race for 2012.

He would have won the election, had he not talked about the religious cults .I was voting for him he was the best suited..until he got into the cults ...the min he spoke of the religious cults.. a lot of people including my self walked away .. The religious cults have NO PLACE IN GOVERNMENT EVER !

The Mormon sect he belongs to is not a cult. It is a legitimate religious denomination.

I think it's really sad that the religion of a presidential candidate gets made into a bigger election issue than their actual ability to run the country.

I guess it is up to me to say a kind word about Mitt. I have read both his books (Turn Around and No Apologies), and have concluded that he is capable, a good hearted person, and his life is scandal free (I guess Mitt should have left the dog in a dark, cold cage at a doggie hotel instead of taking him to enjoy an outdoor vacation with the family). I am glad that someone is focusing on this down economy. I am tired of hearing rants about the "ground zero mosque", and have turned off Rush and Hannity.
