First thoughts: White House tries to snap losing streak

AP

President Barack Obama and Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo. February 18, 2010 file photo.

White House hopes to snap a losing streak in today’s Bennet-vs.-Romanoff primary in CO… Also in the state, it’s Norton vs. Buck, as well as McInnis vs. Maes… In CT, it’s Lamont vs. Malloy in the Democratic gubernatorial primary, and it’s Fedele vs. Foley in the GOP race for governor… In MN, it’s Dayton vs. Kelliher… And in GA, it’s Handel vs. Deal… Haley Barbour drops mail in IA… The House votes on the $26 billion in state aid this afternoon… Profiling CO-4… And Bill Clinton stumps for Sestak.

*** White House tries to snap a losing streak: Since winning the White House, President Obama hasn’t experienced much success when he’s dipped his toes into the electoral waters. Last year, the two Democrats he campaigned for, Jon Corzine in New Jersey and Creigh Deeds in Virginia, both lost. In January, another Democrat he tried to save in Massachusetts’ special Senate election, Martha Coakley, met a similar fate. And in May, the Democrat he was backing in Pennsylvania’s Senate primary, Arlen Specter, went down to defeat. (Even when the White House tried to distance itself from a Democrat it thought was about lose, Blanche Lincoln, she pulled off the upset and won.) Individually, each of these losses was explainable and not really a White House responsibility. Still…

*** Bennet vs. Romanoff: That’s why today’s Democratic Senate primary in Colorado between incumbent Sen. Michael Bennet (whom Obama has endorsed) and former House Speaker Andrew Romanoff (whom Bill Clinton has endorsed) is important for the White House. Simply put, they NEED a win, and that’s why Obama has campaigned for Bennet and why he called into a tele-town hall for the senator last week just days after polling showed Romanoff was surging. The other reasons why the White House and the DSCC want Bennet to win is because he has more money and organization -- Romanoff, after all, had to sell his house to finance his campaign -- and because a Romanoff win would allow the Darrell Issas of the world to resuscitate the White-House-offered-Romanoff-a-job-to-keep-him-out-of-the-race storyline.

*** Norton vs. Buck and McInnis vs. Maes: But perhaps the best -- and most competitive -- Senate primary in Colorado today isn’t on the Democratic side. Instead, it’s the GOP race between establishment favorite Jane Norton and opponent Ken Buck. The C.W. is that the race is now even, after a series of gaffes by Buck (like saying that Coloradoans should vote for him because he doesn’t wear high heels). The party in DC wants Norton and sees her as the more electable candidate and the one most prepared for the fall campaign. Buck, like Romanoff, is playing the role of the insurgent. The other Republican primary in Colorado to watch is the gubernatorial contest between former front-runner Scott McInnis, who’s been plagued by a plagiarism scandal, and Dan Maes, who has warned that programs boosting bicycle riding are a threat to freedom. Privately, we’re hearing that Republicans want McInnis, so they could potentially switch horses to find a stronger candidate to face Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper (D) in the fall; a Maes victory dashes those smoke-filled-room plans. Most balloting in Colorado is done by mail, and those ballots must be turned in by 9:00 pm ET.

*** Lamont vs. Malloy and Fedele vs. Foley: The other states holding key contests today are Connecticut, Minnesota, and Georgia. While Linda McMahon’s campaign is receiving much of the national attention in Connecticut, she’s expected to cruise to victory in the primary. But the real competitive races are the ones for governor -- the Dem contest between 2006 Senate nominee Ned Lamont and former Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy, and the GOP primary between (among others) former Bush ambassador to Ireland Tom Foley and Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele. A final Quinnipiac poll showed Lamont at 45% and Malloy at 42% among likely primary voters, while it had Fedele at 38% and Foley at 30%. Polls in Connecticut close at 8:00 pm ET.

*** Dayton vs. Kelliher and Handel vs. Deal: Meanwhile, the Democratic gubernatorial primary in Minnesota -- featuring former Sen. Mark Dayton and state House speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher -- is a big test for the new leadership at Emily’s List, which is backing Kelliher. The organization under its previous leadership had a terrible track record in primaries, but a wholesale change in staff and philosophy has since taken place. A Kelliher victory would be a BIG feather in the cap of the new team. That said, Dayton has spent an ENORMOUS amount of his own money so it won't be easy for Kelliher. The winner of the Democratic field, which also features former state House leader Matt Entenza, will take on presumptive GOP nominee Tom Emmer. In Georgia, there’s the gubernatorial run-off between former Secretary of State Karen Handel (whom Palin campaigned for yesterday) and former Rep. Nathan Deal. Polls in Georgia close at 7:00 pm ET, and they close at 9:00 pm ET in Minnesota. *** CORRECTION *** We said above that Emily's List has had a terrible track record in primaries. That is not correct; we should have said it has had a terrible track record in some key general election contests.

*** Barbour drops mail in … Iowa: Politico’s Martin reports that Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, the chairman of the Republican Governors Association, is dropping mail introducing himself to Iowa Republicans. “The piece encourages recipients to sign up for updates on Barbour’s website, a means of building a list. The governor is planning to raise money later this year in Iowa for GOP gubernatorial candidate Terry Branstad and, officially, the piece is only aimed at 2010. ‘We can't wait until 2012 to start taking our country back,’ Barbour writes on the mailer. ‘We need to elect conservative governors and members of Congress in 2010.’” You can look at the emerging GOP 2012 field this way: the establishment (Romney, Barbour), the new faces (Pawlenty, Daniels, Thune), the evangelicals (Huckabee and Santorum), and the cable TV personas (Palin and Gingrich). The Republican who is best able to own two or three of these categories will probably be your 2012 Republican nominee.

*** The House returns: Beyond today’s primaries and speculation about 2012, the House -- after coming back from its interrupted recess -- today votes on the $26 billion in state aid that the Senate passed last week. Per NBC’s Luke Russert, the vote is slated to occur between 1:00 pm ET and 3:00 pm ET. After the likely passage, the legislation will go to President Obama’s desk for his signature.

*** 75 House races to watch: CO-4: The Democratic candidate in this race will be one-term incumbent Betsy Markey, and her GOP opponent will be state Rep. Cory Gardner. McCain grabbed 50% of the vote in this district in ’08, and Bush got 58% in ’04. As of July 21, Markey had $1.5 million in the bank, and Gardner had $734,000. Markey voted for the stimulus, cap-and-trade, and health care. Cook rates the race as a Toss Up, while Rothenberg has it Lean Republican.

*** More midterm news: An American Crossroads poll, conducted by GOP pollster Glen Bolger, shows GOP candidates on in 13 key Senate contests leading their Democratic opponents by a combined 47%-39% margin… In Kentucky, the Paul campaign has threatened legal action against GQ, Greg Sargent reports (but the campaign has yet to deny what’s in the GQ article)… And in Pennsylvania, Bill Clinton today stumps for Joe Sestak.

I like to throw this in anytime I see people complaining about politicians. These are my sentiments to a "T"

Subject: 545 People,
By Charlie Reese, a former columnist of the Sentinel Newspaper.

Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.

Have you ever wondered why, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, we have deficits?
Have you ever wondered why, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, we have inflation and high taxes?
You and I don't propose a federal budget. The president does.
You and I don't have the Constitutional authority to vote on
appropriations. The House of Representatives does.
You and I don't write the tax code, Congress does.
You and I don't set fiscal policy, Congress does.
You and I don't control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does.

One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one president, and nine Supreme Court justices.
545 human beings out of the 300 million are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.

I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress.
In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.
I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason.
They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a president to do one cotton-picking thing.
I don't care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it.
No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator's responsibility to determine how he votes.

Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault.
They cooperate in this common con regardless of party.
What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall.

No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits.
The president can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it.
The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes.

Who is the speaker of the House? She is the leader of the majority party. She and fellow House members, not the president, can approve any budget they want. If the president vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.
It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million can not replace 545 people who stand convicted -- by present facts -- of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can't think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people.
When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what THEY want to exist.

If the tax code is unfair, it's because they want it unfair.
If the budget is in the red, it's because they want it in the red.
If the Marines are in , it's because they want them in .
If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it's because they want it that way.

There are no insoluble government problems.

Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power. Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like "the economy," "inflation," or "politics" that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.

Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible. They, and they alone, have the power.
They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees.
We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess!

It's time someone says it... Obama is a nice guy, but his policies have been disastrous. Our economy is not recovering like it should because of his policies... he didn't save anything. Businesses realize that Mr. Obama and his administration are enemies and anti-business. Ask any honest person who owns a business and they will tell you that they won't hire with health care costs increasing, taxes increasing and regulations adding costs to doing business. They simply won't do it and Mr. Obama continues to push for those thing. They won't hire and so we'll sit at 17% unemployment until we get some balance and common sense governing. Obama is coming up on 2 years in his presidency and it's looking very much like the Carter administration which we can hardly afford. Good luck to all of you... believe me when I say you'll need it.

Okay,

Here is a down the middle comment.

While I agree that this bill is important to save teacher jobs, do not for a minute think this is budget neutral. You are drinking the kool-aid of the government. The Dems say the Repubs have no new ideas and the repubs say the dems are tax and spend. Both are probably true. Both are just appeasing their constituents.

The problem of the republicans is they are half right. They want to cut taxes to grow tax revenue. This actually works. The problem is you have to CUT spending, which they say they are for, but never seem to get around to. So then it doesn't work.

The problem with the dems is they want to handout money to those in need. A very worthy cause. The problem is they think they can spread the wealth and only tax the rich (over $250k). This works for a while, but eventually revenue dries up as the rich stop spending. These rich account for 58% of US spending. Then they end up taxing those they said they would not.

The math is simple. You keep a teacher employed at say $70k a year, they spend some and get taxed some, the problem is they are not going to get taxed 100% of their pay. So someone is paying for it. You and me through eventual higher taxes.

The key here is you need a little of both. You need to reign in spending eventually while telling the very cold hard truth that taxes will go up. Will 3-5% more taxes hurt..probably. But we will get used to it like we always do.

You cannot make a budget like this at home. If you want spend more you have to earn more. Same thing with the government. I am especially amused at the recent announcement of the base closing and the savings it would incur. Who is screaming foul..the dems. Why? It is unpopular with their constituents. Will any of them tell the truth and say it is necessary? No. Why? Votes.

The real solution here is term limits. Then they will do what we ask. Dem, Repub, or indepependent. They know they have a short time to do what they "promised", and being a Senator or Representative is not a career.

Also, please stop attributing this latest round to the president. He does not introduce legislation. He signs it or vetoes it. This was congressmen timing this bill for votes. Why not earmark some of the unspent stimulus? Because it is not as glamorous. The money is there already, why more?

Just food for thought, not rancour.

You are right on the mark! I especially agree with the republican cut the taxes but never seem to get around cutting the spending part.

That is one of the reasons I dislike ppl like Hannity. All they ever do is talk about Reagan this and Reagan that. Now while Reagan was an incredible leader, he was a complete hypocrite when it came to money.

How many times have you heard his famous quote, of the most dreaded words, "I'm from the government and i've come to help." Reagans tax cuts brought in floods of money into the government, but notice that we never ended up with a surplus did we? No, we ended up with deficits. So Reagan talked out of both sides of his mouth. Great leader, but just another big spender. Ppl like Hannity always ignore that last part, and if anyone tries to call them on it, they ignore it, hang up, or call them names.

Of all the politicians around, the one i like the most is Huckabee. At least the man knows how to have a civil conversation with those he disagrees with and in the process earns their respect...what a concept, huh?

Oh I LOVE a good political update. Seems we robbed Peter to pay Paul. They are going to cut into food stamps to pay for this $28 Billion dollar vote getting machine.

Just like the worst parts of the healthcare bill don't taked place until after the elections, this bills worst parts are going to be several years off when hopefully we will all forget about it.

I love politicians. They are all so honest and forthcoming. They NEVER put bills together for the sake of votes under the pretense of helping others.

We need to put term limits in place now, so that the unions and lobbyists can't line the pockets of these career criminals in Washington.

Wow what a choice the party of "no" or the party of "can't say no". What a choice. We need a third strong party. This two party system is killing us. The spectrum of opinions in each party is not true to either of their "core values" anymore. This is truly dis-heartening.

    News from Chicago No Jo

About 1,200 city school workers will receive layoff notices this week, and principals will begin sharing the budget pain via pay freezes and six furlough days, as Chicago Public Schools officials move today to plug their remaining $370 million deficit.

With no concessions from teachers due a 4 percent pay raise, schools CEO Ron Huberman planned to unveil a $6.4 billion budget today that will leave zero dollars in the system's reserve-fund piggybank -- a move one expert said could violate School Board policy and affect the system's bond rating.

In January, with state funding in turmoil, CPS officials predicted their deficit for the new school year would be $1 billion. An assortment of cuts and $400 million in pension relief brought the red ink down to $370 million by August.

Union delegates will "weigh in'' on the latest developments at a meeting Wednesday, Lewis said. Meanwhile, she said, federal passage of an educator job-saving bill looks promising, routing part of a city tax increment financing surplus to schools is being discussed, and if "the General Assembly pays its bills, we ought to be quite even.''

The most controversial part of the budget may be its plan to tap all $190 million left in the reserve fund, leaving CPS without any reserves for the first time since Mayor Daley took over the school system in 1995.

Board policy requires that CPS hold 5 percent of its operating budget, or at least $280 million, in reserve by the end of each fiscal year, said CPS Chief Financial Officer Diana Ferguson.

See No Jo the union only has so much power, as you see in this story schools CEO Ron Huberman is has cut almost 1/2 billion from the school budget. he has done drastic things to get his budget balances and that includes violating state law. with cuts this deep how will kids benefit in the end. this story is typical all over the country.

Why not earmark some of the unspent stimulus? Because it is not as glamorous. The money is there already, why more?

      Response:

Because it will raise the taxes of the Middle Class!

McCain endorses cutting middle class tax breaks by using unspent stimulus funds.

Despite spending the past year talking about the need to cut spending and reduce the deficit,

Republican leaders have proven time and again that they have few real ideas about how to accomplish that.

      Instead, they turn to gimmicks,

like eliminating the Affordable Care Act

the repeal of which would actually increase the deficit

      and using unspent stimulus funds.

When right-wing CNBC host Larry Kudlow asked Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) Friday whether he would support using unspent stimulus funds as a “down payment” for a future budget,

McCain said he “would absolutely advocate that” and perhaps make it a part of the GOP agenda:

KUDLOW: There’s a couple of hundred billion dollars of unspent stimulus money. Now, can that be stopped? Can that be canceled? Can that save the spending baseline? Would that be the down payment on longterm budget plan?

MCCAIN: I would absolutely advocate that. And maybe if they haven’t spent that all by January, that should be in our agenda as well

      The problem with McCain’s plan

is that represents a tax hike for middle class Americans.

Despite conservative attempts to smear it,

the stimulus package actually cut taxes for 95 percent of working families,

providing middle class Americans with valuable tax breaks and credits.

There is still $55 billion in unspent stimulus funds dedicated to tax benefits.

Meanwhile, other Republicans have gone a step further than McCain,

      calling for

raiding the middle class tax benefits in the stimulus in order to pay for extending the Bush tax cuts on the wealthy”

Excuse me? I may not be an accountant, but how can spending money we have already set aside raise taxes more than a new bill spendng $28 billion more?

I think you need to really stop and think about it. This had NOTHING to do with whatever McCain piece of garbage legislation you wanted to rant about.

        #58.1 - Tue Aug 10, 2010 12:22 PM EDT

giving those so called middle tax cut breaks helps no one, they hire no one and help no one, its just a give away program, the bush tax cuts actually helps the ones who hire and give people jobs , the trickle down effect, the middle class trickles down to no one, all they do is help walmart and china as they go out and waste all there money on chinese goods!! If anyone tells you middle class tax cuts help the economy there a lier-thats obama's plan and unemployment went up with his plan!!

          #58.2 - Tue Aug 10, 2010 1:06 PM EDT

We middle class taxpayers are just worker bees. We aren't entitled to tax cuts because that would just be a give away program. Only rich people deserve tax cuts. As worker bees we should be glad the queen and drones are willing to share with us.

Pretty much what I perceived the Republican plan to be as well. Thanks for putting it in plain talk.

            #58.3 - Tue Aug 10, 2010 3:43 PM EDT

Yeah, we are all waiting for the queen to return from her taxpayer-funded trip to Spain to see what she got us.

There have been a lot of liberal/leftists rants on these posts today, with flawed economic logic, wishful thinking and revisionist history. It is now known that cogs in the marxist machine have told their people to distort, lie, deflect, defame and demonize in this political season. Anything to keep from talking about the real issues. Many in our land are waking up, the groundswell is continuing, and the momentum is there. No matter what they try to do, the string of "losses" will continue. Class envy and class warfare, empty cries of racism, marxist redistribution schemes clothed in the bogus trojan horse of "social justice" are all tired and failed tactics that more and more citizens are seeing through. A season of true recovery, freedom, recovery, and sanity is at hand. Although it will take the courage and forbearance of many, this national nightmare that has been foisted upon us by our internal foes can and will be defeated.

There is no evidence or proof that Obama is a closet Muslim! It is certainly clear he is not a true christian, but don't start the he's a muslim rant as there is no proof in that. Sheesh!

Is it possible that Obama is a closet muslim? Yeah, it's possible. But until there is any actual evidence it's akin to saying that Bush orchestrated 9-11 and set off explosions to blow up the towers.

I prefer to deal with real evidence not paranoid delusions.

That picture of Bennet with Obama is the kiss of death. Romanoff will win easily because Clinton endorsed him. Same thing for Crist in Florida. There is about 17% undecided votes in Florida. That picture of Crist bear-hugging Obama? Priceless.

No not of a human, the Antichrist. Obama ordered nurses to kill babies, he spent a trillion dollars my great great grand children will be paying on for a medical service that will fail in the first 4 to 6 years proven, he held up clean up in the BP crisis for monetary gain for his friends in big business and shut down drill for oil so that other countries could drill the oil and charge us double while his friends invest in these companies. He gave Dodge to Fiat which the major investor are terrorist from the middle east (Momar Kadafi) whats is sick is that you stupid sheep follow false profits. We have not had a president of the People and For the people in a vary long time. But Obama is a puppet for big corps and lacks the age experience and education to be in office. And you do not get the education he needs in school!!

The Government wants to control and manipulate slowly over time so that we won't notice it as abruptly, just like putting medical plan off till 2014. We want to put a chip in your kids so if they are kidnapped we can find them quickly NO!!! we want to put a chip in everyone so we know exactly where everyone is what they are doing thinking feeling so we can control ( but we will hide it as a security feature for safe kids. We will try to take away guns so the people are not a threat when they realize what we are doing. We need to take our country back and put the Government in its place, representing my and your opinion and our vote. Not the electoral college vote and there should be no riders on bills or laws one to one voting by the people no the Government. We all have access to computers now I do not need a middle man.

Since when did the GOP get concerned about spending???? The last 3 gop presidents had well over $10T in debt on their watches. And IT WAS deliberate! It's one of the biggest examples of HYPOCRICY by the gop that ive EVER SEEN! Their intent was to cause a budget crisis..... and they have!

PS. MSNBC seems obsessed with portraying Prs. Obama in a less than favorablle light!

As for whether it was deliberate or not, it's hard to conclude that it wasn't. They sold us tax cuts without offering any offsetting cuts in spending. To see how that would turn out you only need to understand addition and subtraction.

It is a sad day when I see that the American public can flare up and insult each other so much. When I was young and in school there was a phrase we all typed in order to learn the equipment.

It read like this "Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country".

We are supposed to be the leading example to the world and here we are desperately trying to put one another down through insults, vulgarity, and down right inhumane verbage.

I believe in constructive criticism, but there is nothing constructive in some of the items printed here. Just plain sad since the reality is that everyone has the freedom of speech and to see it be wasted as such is just degrading to the person throwing the insults into the forum.

You all talk about the Republicans are for the rich. Well I didn't make $5 million last year, nor did the US tax payers pay for my air fare or vacations. Nor did I charge the Taxpayer $18,000 for a office, like Pelosi. The Democrats tell us to tighten out belts and Michelle O, travels to Spain and stays at a 5 Star Hotel, and eats like a Queen. plus brings 40 guests with. Is she a Republican?

If I made what Charlie Rangle owes in Taxes, I would be happy. Is he a Republican.

Teachers get paid by taxpayer money from their states. My property tax that I pay, pays for teachers salaries. Why should my Federal Tax Money pay for their Salaries also. Just because the Teacher Unions backed Odumbo and the Democrats in the Election.

Why did my Tax dollars go to buy Government Motors? And then give 33% of Government Motors to the Unions, who ruined the company. Odumbo bought Chrysler with tax dollars and then gave it to Ita. Now they get the rewards at tax payers expense. Oh yea the Auto Unions donated to Odumbo and the Democrats! Must be pay back time by the Democrats with TAX PAYER DOLLARS!

What does school loans have to do with health care? or saving the minnow have to do with stimulus, or building a bridge for turtles have to do with stimulus. I'm waiting for the Democrats to put up a crossing guard for those turtles to make sure they use their $ Million dollar bridge.

The Democrats passed Financial reform. But left out Fannie and Freddie. Now they want $1.8 billion more of tax payer dollars. Who started Fannie and Freddie. Clinton a Democrat. Who warned us of the problems with Fannie & Freddie. Bush and the Republicans. Who said that there was no problems with Fannie & Freddie, DEMOCRATS!

Unemployment under a Republican control congress and White House was under 5%, tell the Democrats took over Congress. And you still blame Bush and the Republicans for the failures of the Democrats and their Liberal Socialistic programs. Seems to me that with the Bush Tax Cuts and a Republican run Congress everything was running fine. People that wanted to work could get a job. What about now, since the Democrats took over. Or do you go by Obama's Fuzzy Math which went down -97,000 jobs that they said there was last month?
