Ethics Cmte. formally charges Waters

The AP writes:

The House ethics committee has formally charged California Democrat Maxine Waters with three counts of ethics wrongdoing, including charges that she accepted special
favors for a family member.

The announcement of the charges opens the way for a trial this fall before eight members of the ethics committee -- four Democrats and four Republicans.

Waters, a 10-term representative from Los Angeles who holds a senior position on the Financial Services Committee, has denied the charges. The committee denied her motion to dismiss the charges.

*** UPDATE *** Here are the details of what the Investigative Subcommittee of the Committee on Standards of Official Conduct is alleging.

Hiya Rick,

My observations exactly...and with John Boehner as well...prior to the meltdown--he cashed out his holdings while appointed to the committee to oversee the banking debacle...my only question is "why wont Democrats go after them"? It isn't throwing stone for stone...they would both be doing a service to our nation rather than engage in one sided politics...after all...they ARE guilty....

Mark: Same question as with Charlie Rangel. If Walters agrees to a plea deal and the Republicans reject the deal. Wouldn't the ethics committee as a whole vote to decide whether to accept or reject the plea? With the majority being Democrats, isn't it likely that a plea would be accepted?

Pushing Negrophobia is what the RepubliCANT's do best! Rangel, Waters, and reportedly other Black members of Congress.

When will the investigation begin on C-Street! Where is the investigation of Eric the Can't and his wifes bank. Why is Ensign still a member of the Senate?

Let's be fair about applying the ethics rules. Oh, I forgot, minorities are the only people that the laws apply to!

Not everything is racial but in this case, one does have to wonder if there isn't something in the media coverage that is questionable--not the racial aspect but why only democrats. What about Cantor's wife; and Boehner's little group he has been counseling regarding their ethics problems? Why isn't that in the news? Why isn't the fact that the FBI is investigating GOPer John Ensign in the news? The only ones in the news are democrats who happen to be black.

What we should be asking is why is the media (not FR, this is a political chat site) pushing this narrative? They are continually pushing a negative narrative about democrats and Pres Obama which I find troubling.

Accordiing to the Statement of Allegations their stock in this bank was worth $352,000 at the end of 2007 and represented 5-15% of their entire net worth. It also says that the stock would have been "worthless" if the bank failed.

From one of the counts against her:

Count III: Conduct in Violation of the Code of Ethics for Government Service, clause 5

              Any person in government should:

Never discriminate unfairly by the dispensing of special favors or privelges to anyone, whether for renumeration or not; and never accept for himself or his family, favors or benefits under circumstances which might be contrued by reasonable persons as influencing the performance of his governmental duties.

So basically they are saying that every politician I've ever known of is in violation of their own ethics rules???

I don't have a problem with the ethics committee doing their job; if Waters and Rangel did wrong, they should pay a price. What I object to is the lack of coverage of GOPer ethics problems. Fair is fair. The swamp contains both parties and both should be reported by the media with equal zest.

To be honest, I don't have a problem with the "First Lady" taking a vacation. The right says that we are free and should remain so, we have freedoms that should not be taken away, then I feel that the "First Lady" is free to vacation wherever and whenever she likes. And, don't start with the "taxpayers money" and all the garb, i've heard it enought to last me for the rest of my life. No need to repeat.

Are you suggesting we might not be able to take the crap they're shoving down our throats as the unfiltered unbiased truth? Could it be possible that there is a hidden agenda to what passes through the Editors of our largest and most "trusted" corporate media enterprises? I'm shocked!!! /sarcasm on.

Okay we have both Republicans and Democrats caught doing things they shouldn't . These are politicians who by definition are crooks to begin with. Party affiliation really has little to do with it. If Ms. Waters is guilty she will be dealt with as any other member would. Oh, and race has nothing to do with it.

I am no big fan of Rep Waters, but these allegations to me look no different from what most members of congress do. She helped a minority owned bank remain solvent. This is very much in the spirit of things she has always done. 175,000 is chump change in the real world of Congress. Yes she is responsible for her staff, but I find it odd that the report names here chief of staff as her grandson...that is an irrelevant detail which is only included to imply wrong doing and should not have been included. I find this investigation to be a BIG waste of time and will cost us all way more money than what was involved

Looking at the charges, my question is since OneUnited Bank was obviously in trouble, might they have received the assistance they did without the help of Ms. Waters' chief of staff? I see her chief of staff assisting in setting up a meeting, but I don't see him dictating the results of the meeting. I'm not sure this rises to the level of an ethics violation. It seems like a bit of a stretch to me.
