As we mentioned earlier today, the results from last night's primaries in Oklahoma ensure that Oklahoma will have its first-ever female governor -- either Mary Fallin (R) or Jari Askins (D).
In fact, per Rutgers' Center for American Women and Politics, there are eight states this year that could very well elect it's first-ever female governor: California (Republican Meg Whitman?), Florida (Democrat Alex Sink?), Georgia (Republican Karen Handel?), Maine (Democrat Libby Mitchell?), Minnesota (Dem Margaret Anderson Kelliher?), New Mexico (either Dem Diane Denish or Republican Susana Martinez), Oklahoma, and South Carolina (Republican Nikki Haley?).
As NBC's Jillian Hughes noted earlier this month, come 2011, we could approach or surpass the previous record or nine women residing in governors mansions simultaneously.

Good. We need more women in politics at all levels.
Wonder, though, if any of 'em will be quitters?
Wink-Wink.
It's good to see more women in politics... but sometimes you have to be careful about what you wish for. For example: We certainly don't need old Meg-a-Bucks in California. She is already talking about tax cuts for her CEO buddies as if they don't get enough. I also want to know what she is hoping to gain by trying to buy the governorship. She has most probably promised her greedy rich buddies all sorts of favors. Business people don't spend millions if they are not getting anything in return.
Sorry Ramboet but I would take Meg Whitman over Jerry Brown anyday. I lived through the "Brown" years in California and "Eight is Enough". A retread Brown cannot help California solve it's financial problems, he is a Lawyer and a lifetime politician, not a job creator. We need businesses to want to locate here in California and bring jobs with them; not be driven out by ill conceived tax policies.
We raise taxes and businesses fold up or leave....this gives us less tax revenue so.....we raise taxes and more businesses fold up or leave. This vicious cycle is a job killer, so yeah.....let's try a new approach! Steve Jobs is very rich, and very smart, look what he's done for Apple! Just because someone is rich does not mean that they are not smart and capable....it probably means they are!
I’m surprised there has been NO mention of today being the 100th day of the ongoing catastrophe in the Gulf!
Remarkable what ‘shiny’ objects will do…
I want to remind those being directly effected & suffering down there I continue to keep you in my thoughts & prayers!
Amen to that Feisty. Nice sentiments as well.
Ditto, Feisty. On The Weather Channel this morning, they talked about it like it will be all over when they seal up the well -- or try to -- next week. Once that happens, they'll no doubt bring the crews home and go back to those East Coast beach condition reports, sprinkled with a few spots on the weather in the Far East.
Out of sight, out of mind. Americans like it that way.
Hi, Feisty. Suppose JoAnnaSmith will give us her picks for Governor? She seems to be pretty astute at political observations, don't you think? Maybe today will be the day she takes me up on my invite to elaborate on all the good GWB bestowed upon the country and it's citizenry for 8 years!
Nah... Drive-By!
The only thing JoAnna Smith is proficient at is 'picking' is her nose! ;0)
I noticed that she has been avoiding you... lmao!
Don't be so quick to elect a woman just because of her gender. Look what the esteemed Governor of Michigan did for us. It was bad when she took office and it just got worse. She promised to "blow us away with change" in her re-election and it still just got worse, or atleast not better.
Ditto that, Ghost1! When Granholm talked about being blown away, I'm sure many had no idea that it would be jobs that were blown away and disappeared. No one should vote for a woman just because she's a woman. And no one should vote for change just for the sake of change, without knowing what type of change is intended.
Nice Post KLM and from what I read those are some good words to live by...Bravo
Be aware of what KIND of CHANGE you are voting for!! Because we might end up in the @!$%# we are in today!!!
I was way better off 2 or so years ago than I am today.. Ask yourself that before you VOTE!!
Hey Scole........ I asked myself if I was better off than I was when Dubya took over.............. and my answer is YES. Of course, you don't have that long a memory do you.
And tell me Scole......... What do the Bush tax cuts do for you. And what does letting the Disclose bill fail do for you. What does all the No No Hell No do for you. You ask yourself that instead of listening to the rantings of Fox No News. You are not rich yet rich people like Beck and Limbaugh are laughing all the way to the bank because of people like you. They are in it for the money....... they couldn't care less about what happens to you as long as you keep buying the gold they are touting and buying the t-shirts, and crap they sell at their rallies. Who do you think pays for the $75,000 + that Palin rakes in every time she goes somewhere to spew her hate. It's you. And the money is going into her pockets. You are such fools and you can't see it.
I think it is great that more females are being elected to higher office. Many would make great Governors, Congress persons and Senators as well as President, as long as the voters stay away from the air heads like Palin and Bachmann no matter their party. Altough it does appear that the Republicans have this habit lately of promoting and supporting the idiots of the female gender.
I think Fiesty is a little upset that the Obamanator couldn't use this disaster to his political advantage(which was always the reason) to pass CRAP and TAX BS!
He has proven he is a moderate and swept it under the rug! How do you Liberal SHEEP like the way he used you to get your vote and then chews you up and spits you out! I guess the majority of the country is more centered than you thought...I bet it stings doesnt it so you had your chance and you blew it but tis ok everything will be okay! Everyone of your dreams have been watered down to ineffective status or filibustered by the GOP!!
Now that my friends is CHANGE you CAN Believe in LOL!!
That witch running for Governor of California will have spent many millions of her own billions of dollars only to find herself on the outside of the Governor's mansion looking at it. Well, maybe Gov. Brown will invite her in just to be nice. Meg Whitman's campaign has been dirty and full of lies. Anyone checking "Fact Check.org" will find that out.
If you get to make perjorative comments about Meg Whitman (who has accomplished more with her life than you could ever imagine possibly doing), can I take cracks at Askins? I mean just look at her picture what a (**^&^&%^()()*(+! Are you done with the infantile comments yet?
Actually, there's a big article on this being the 100th day since the spill with local's stories of the crisis.
CA, Tuscaloosa, AL, If you and others think that Palin and Bachmann are air heads, why do you keep bringing up their names. Why are you so scared of them? I don’t care for Palin myself, and I tend to ignore any stories or watch any programs where she is speaking. I would not vote for her, and that is my choice. However, it seems you lefties are so scared of her, any story about her or her family; you have to drive the story into the ground. If you don’t know by now, she lost the election. Ms. Bachmann, different story, she has a good head on her shoulders and she speaks how she feels. I have not read or seen anything about her that implies she is an airhead. Why resort to name calling, have an honest debate.
Unfortunately, you are not alone in the negative immature attacks. Both sides of the isle would rather make rude and crude remarks. Civility in this country is gone, and I think what is worse, is that people cannot hold an honest debate with decorum.
I thought the article was well written, and I am voting for Ms. Healy. After our last space cadet Governor, I think we need a solid person with a good head on their shoulders.
I think Adler is right up there with you….. “A witch”……lol..lol..lol…
andygrd:
Scared of Palin and Bachmann? LOL, I don't think so. I speak of them when something is written about them on this blog. I bring them up now and again on my own as on this thread because as I had stated many moons ago, neither are to get any quarter. And when there is an opportunity to speak of either one, or both at the same time, I will because they have chosen to put themselves in the public eye. Therefore, they made themselves open to comment. So I do comment on them because they are some of the most idiotic and self-serving individuals I have seen in a long time, and both (especially Palin) keep themselves in the limelight for one reason and one reason only, money. So I will keep commenting on them as long as there is even one person out there that supports anything they say or do, or until one or both get the hell out of the politcal arena. Both have decided to play the divisive attack damage game on the national level so they are open for the same.
Her reply will be wordy. Trolls get paid by the word.
Hi Andy: Leftis are not scared of Palin. Lefties would love her to be the republican nominee in 2012. In fact Netroots proved that to be the case in their straw poll. So you are definitely mistaken if you think democrats are scared of her. We think she is an idiot when it comes to policies and what's going on in the world, but I have to give her credit when it comes to raking in the money. She knows she can get heaps of money from the people who love to hear her spew her hate. She won't get a penny from me, but she manages to fool those that love to hate.
As for Bachman Overdrive... I don't live in Minnesota. If the people there are happy with her being responsible for their welfare, then that's their problem.
It gets government who @!$%#s up everything they touch even further away from intrusion in my life.
So quit with the jealousy and hate and get on with the job of taking care of yourself and your family because in the end NO ONE OWES YOU ANYTHING...Take personal responsibility for yourself and your actions and get out there and make it happen!!
And surely your not talking about the Adulterer IMPEACHED Corrupt Sissy Clinton are you?
Anyone could have a surplus for a year or too when they have a tech stock market rally,NO WARS,raise taxes and cut the military and government in half oh and don't forget the 5 or more terrorist attacks that he didn't respond to!!
The polls show California Democrat Jerry Brown holds a 46 percent to 40 percent lead over his Republican rival Meg Whitman as of today.
The can't do any worse. Hopefully we get a nice "crop" of new Presidential contenders out of this. Never forget "Lady Luck"!
FactCheck.org is a paid political arm of MoveOn.org and George Soros (Owner of the Democratic Party). There is no veracity on that website - just more Obamaganda.
Wrong Mark. Factcheck.org is funded by the Annenberg Foundation. Walter Annenberg was in the Nixon Administration as an ambassador. He was later good friends with the Reagans. Soros has nothing to do with the org. Try again.
I'd like to think women could do a better job, but I haven't seen it. Massachusetts had Jane Swift, and she had her staff babysitting her kids, etc. I believe the old saying "Power corrupts", and I don't believe women have the moral high ground, especially a political setting.
And the point is?... my mom served 26 years as a local elected republican councilwoman, was citizen of the year and served as chairman of the board for 5 of the years... it had nothing to do that she was a woman... she just did a good job.... or at least the voters thought so.... she was the highest vote getter (7 person board) in each of her elections.... it's not the sex... it's the capability....
Gender is no compelling reason for voting for or against a candidate. We are all acquainted with dim-wits of either sex. I'll take honesty and competence with a little vision and leadership thrown in first and after that I'll consider the roundness of their skin.
We don't need Meg Whitman for our next Governor-she is part of Corporate America and the elite group who are raking in big bucks at the expense of the worker bees. She is a real problem-look hard behind her is a line of the very wealthy who want to continue the travesty taking place in America. Don't think she really cares for you worker bee. She has run a vicious campaign with so many LIES. Another pretty face which masks her ugliness.
That's what's entertaining, the spin the ostensible female supremacists shovel out abut why they opose the Republican women. Organized "feminism" has three central goals.
1. Deliver the votes of women to Democrats.
2. Deliver the support of women for abortion industry profits.
3. Deliver the support of women for homosexual acceptance.
Anything else is peripheral.
Andygrd, I think the lack of civility and ability goes all the way to the top "gotta find out who's ass to kick".
LOL, it is so sad to think of how we have digressed in eloquence, from the Reagan era.
I am always loath to raise the banal thought that one sex might be better than the other, beause that is not a fact. Nonetheless, men should stand warned that the gauntlet has been raised, and is in fulfillment of the words of Isaiah when he said "Wo unto my people for women have become their leaders" (as many of you know, every 'mans' version of the English Bible is stated in his own preferences, so don't fault me the writer, just fault the interpreters.) He did not say these words as a warning against women, but most clearly, that because men have failed in their own leadership ability, so women have to come forward and do it for them.
Why is this even a headline? We've had women governors many times before, as well as female mayors, congresswomen, secretaries of state. We've had people of all races and religions serve in all levels of government. Bottom line is the American people don't care about a person's gender, sexual preference or race when it comes to elected officials.....we're just desperate for people who have a spine, some character, some integrity and a genuine interest in serving the public, not lining their pockets.
Fallin will win...shes more attractive then the other candidate...if shes a better speaker and can read a teleprompter,
she's a shoo in...thats how America votes now.
