Tomorrow the House "Tea Party" Caucus chaired by Rep. Michelle Bachmann (R-MN) will hold its first meeting.
The caucus has presented a sort of conundrum for many Republicans. While they want to tap into the energy and excitement that the Tea Party brings, they would rather not deal with some of the out of the mainstream positions that come along with some in the Tea Party.
GOP members are now in the process of deciding whether or not they will join the Tea Party Caucus.
Prominent GOP-ers who have joined the Tea Party Caucus so far:
- GOP Conference Chairman Mike Pence (R-IN)
- NRCC Chairman Pete Sessions (R-TX)
- Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-MI) -- the ranking member on the Select Committee on Intelligence who is also running for governor of Michigan
Prominent GOP-ers who have declined invitations so far:
- Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH)
- Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA)
Bachmann did not bother to inform the GOP leadership that she was going to start the Tea Party Caucus. GOP leadership aides have strongly hinted to NBC News that they were less than pleased at its creation.
THE TEA PARTY CAUCUS PRESS RELEASE:
Tea Party Caucus to Hold First Meeting Tomorrow
(Washington, D.C.) On Wednesday, July 21, the newly formed Tea Party Caucus will be holding its first meeting at 9:00 AM ET. Members of the Caucus will hear from a handful of Americans about how the current economic environment and policies of Congress are impacting their families and businesses.
Following the Caucus meeting, a press conference will be held at 10 AM located at the House Triangle with guests and Members of Congress.
The Caucus meeting itself will be Members only, and media are encouraged to attend the press conference that follows.
The Tea Party Caucus was formed to bring Members' attention to the cries of everyday Americans who are calling for fiscal responsibility, adherence to the Constitution, and limited government.
NOTE: Steny Hoyer (D-MD) had the following to say about the Tea Party today:
"The Tea Party per se I don't think is racist."
"There are obviously, as I said on Sunday, I have seen some virulent racist tracks which I believe are harmful to the public discourse and inconsistent with Americans values. You would have to ask the Tea Party whether they agree with those or not. I mean I don't know who the tea party is number one. You know, the answer to that question is I think that Joe Biden essentially said the same thing in a different, slightly different way. I don't have any reason to believe the Tea Party itself is racist."
When asked his feelings about the newly formed tea party caucus he said, "We'll see how many of the Republicans join the Tea Party Caucus and see whether or not they want to adopt the Tea Party Agenda."

Oh, come on, Dennis - this looks like quite an event so far! Do you think they might have to rent two phone booths instead of just the one?
By the way, I was curious as to what my local Tea Party group was up to, so I just gave their website a quick drive-by. Back when they first organized last year, they were having weekly or bi-weekly meetings - I know, because two co-workers joined up. As of today, their next meeting isn't scheduled until September 23rd.

Actually, I think she's pretty dangerous for Repubs. Never know when she's going to go "Rogue". Could you imagine if she ran as a 3rd party "tea party". I think the outcome for conservatives would be worse than when Ross Perot took those conservative votes.

So three people decide to bring back their version of the Black Panther movement. No one joined and no one was intimidated. Given your use of the singular "racist," perhaps you're right - there might be one in the original Black Panthers. But I'm sure you're confusing the NEW Black Panthers (that has had Faux News' Megyn Kelly foaming at the mouth for the last few weeks over a supposed voter intimidation issue which even conservatives have labelled a mountain out of a molehill) with the original Black Panthers of the 60's, and trying to correlate the two and make a conflation out of nothingness.

In order for the Tea Party to actually be taken seriously, they will have to purge themselves of the likes of Palin (who would lose in a game of scrabble), Bachmann, Neo Nazi facists nutjobs on the border and those radio talking nutjobs.

You that clip that Fox has been broadcasting? Question for you Kaz, regarding the old Boogieman ACORN. Why hasn't Fox been reporting on the law suit against those two tools who recorded all that stuff about how bad they are? Apparently the tape that Fox got was edited quite a bit not to show the ACORN rep grilling those two for information about when the people we're going to be smuggled into the country. How he contacted the authorities about this supposedly human smuggling ring, how these two are now being sued for at least 75k for recording someone w/o their permission. Thats illegal out her in California. Why hasn't Fox reported on any of this? Their supposed to be Fair and Balanced right? Why has Hannity been screaming to the rooftops that ACORN and this rep got a raw deal?
Second, the reason why Boehner and Cantor have joined is because of some of the extreme views of the Teabaggers. Even Boehner, who isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, has enough sense to stay away from them. It makes no sense that they want smaller government but won't have the government take away their entitlements, which are BIG GOVERNMENT. Bachmann is either totally batsh** or doesn't care what the appearance of this would have on her. Remember, she spouts off about Death Panels, FEMA Camps, and all the other crazy stuff that Glenn Beck manufactures. Maddow Rips Rep. Pete Hoekstra For Leaking Sensitive National Security Information
Last night, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow accused Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-MI), the ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee and current gubernatorial candidate, of leaking sensitive intelligence information to the press. Hoekstra told the Washington Post this week that Maj. Nidal M. Hasan had e-mail conversations with a radical Yemeni cleric, Anwar al-Aulaqi. Maddow excoriated Hoekstra for letting Aulaqi know that his e-mail is being monitored:

I don't know what specific comments from Krugman you speak of. But if you are referring to the recommendation that Krugman made months ago as to the size of the stimulus package and how it should have been much, much bigger, I have always said that Obama was wrong and way too short on the size of the stimulus package. In addition, I also have criticized Obama for not putting those funds directly into the pockets of the citizens on the condition that they not save the funds but were given a certain (but short) time frame to go out and spend those funds. Even with the small package that Obama did approve that would have been equal to $6,000 per family and $2,000 per individual, and the entire stimulus amount would have immediately gone back into the economy.
You've got that exactly right, CA. To stimulate, you have to stimulate.
Please, please, keep talking Ms. Bachman. Grab Ms. Blackburn and Ms. Palin and go everywhere, all of the time. please determine the GOP nominee, may he/she be as much of a political giant as Ms. Aingle.

The important thing about the nonsense that you people are spewing is that it's recyclable. It can be used over and over again, no matter who the opposition candidate is, and no matter what the issue is. The bonus is that if you practice your methods as effectively as you did in the months leading up to the 2008 election, your candidates might have the opportunity to continue to run this country into the ground for years to come. I'm a semi-independent democrat living in a district where my representative, a democrat, lives in the same place as a pile of republicans and seems to vote the republican line. He uses his NRA affiliation to beat the second ammendment drum, but voted against health care, stimulus, and everything else. As far as the tea party goes, none of my friends seem to belong to this group of intelectually disabled screamers. I don's see much in my local news regarding the tea party. Thank the diety my representative is not running unapposed. I look for change in the next turn around. Maybe a rep. who will represent the people who live here and who are way below the average poverty level.
