With Sarah Palin behind her and with the latest Mason-Dixon poll showing her ahead, it’s a safe bet that former Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel (R) will qualify for the run-off after the state's seven-way GOP gubernatorial primary tomorrow.
And if she wins the run-off, and then wins the general election in November, Handel would become Georgia's first female governor. But it wouldn't be the only thing she might add to the history books.
Come 2011, Handel could very well be part of a group of female governors who could tie -- or even break -- the previous record of nine women residing in governor's mansions simultaneously (which was set in 2004 and again in 2007).
Next year, three female governors are certain. North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue (D) and Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire (D) aren’t up for re-election until 2012. Then one woman -- either Democratic nominee Diane Denish or Republican nominee Susana Martinez -- is guaranteed to be the next governor of New Mexico.
Nikki Haley (R) in South Carolina is the clear favorite, as is Mary Fallin (R) in Oklahoma. That gets us to five pink governor’s mansions. Analysts say re-election for Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) is probable as well -- that makes six.
Alex Sink (D) in Florida and Meg Whitman (R) in California, both competing in toss-up contests, are a possible Nos. 7 and 8. Handel could be nine. And several other candidates could make Nos. 10, 11, and beyond. There’s Libby Mitchell (D) in Maine; Deb Markowitz (D) and Susan Bartlett (D) in Vermont; and Margaret Anderson Kelliher (D) in Minnesota.
Other women running for governor -- though they're underdogs in their races -- include Joan Heffington (R) in Kansas; Karen Testerman (R) in New Hampshire; Rita Meyer (R) and Leslie Peterson (D) in Wyoming; and Jari Askins (D) in Oklahoma.

This was quite interesting and definitely shows our country's advancements in diversity.
Definitely a sign of an advancing society. Amazing that the US has remained behind the rest of the world for so long in recognizing that women can govern.
Shoot, I'd be happy if Iowa sent a female to Washington--preferrably one named Roxanne Conlin in place of Chuck Grassley this year!
A big AMEN, Jody!
Grassley! Blech!
On the other hand I LOVE Senator Tom Harkin!
True, that, Feisty.
You got it Driveby! I donate to her campaign as often as I can and plan to help at the democrats place more later this summer. It's a tough hill to climb, though. Grassley is pretty good at snowjobs, he's been blowing snow forever.
I had FOX and Freaks on this morning as I usually do to catch the lie of the day. One of the peroxided monkey girls showed her tail and say can we go from Black to pink?
Batsh!t crazy Michelle Bachmann just got the O-Kay to form Tea Party Circus" in Congress. Sorry I meant Caucus. Will she wear pink or will she wear yellow for the "don't thread on me" flag?
Maybe she'll try to get it to replace the stars and stripes because that's how backwards she is.
You got more guts than I do Bev - wandering over to THAT freakshow!
Off Topic - have you gone down town to see any of the Transformers 3 filming? I'm not a fan of the films but watching how they create that 'movie magic' is awesome!
I have admitted before that I occassionally sneak a peak at Fox in the mornings and evenings to catch up on the latest half-truths and tornadic spin coming from them.
M. Bachmann is vying to be the next Sarah Palin so that is all I have to say about that!!!!!
I'd be more convinced this signals progress if we stop referring to the female-held governors' mansions as "pink." Lavender, if you please. ;)
Most women I know like the color pink, and for those of a certain age "lavender" connotes an entirely, though outmoded and archaic meaning...:)
It hit me, too, Anna Molly.
Really, guys, if a man wins, do you denote that the governor's mansion has turned blue?
Put another way-sexist much?
I don't see anything sexist intended by our hosts in the reference. Sure pink is feminine, but WE females have an entire pink ribbon campaign on breast cancer--that's not sexist. One thing that always bugs me is when women take offense at nonsense. I find the "pink" mansion humorous, not offensive.
Women make up more than half the population and electorate...How many women out of 100 senators? Congresspeople?...It is amazing how few women have been elected to office in the US, and even more so when you look at other supposedly less enlightened nations...When will we have a Madam President?
dangerfield ~ Whom did you support in the 2008 primaries?
Hillary...and she would have made a great president imho...
A Tea Party Caucus--well, the real nuts will clearly identify themselves now. Bet Iowa's Steve King is first in line.
Wonder what will happen to these fringe nuts when the People determine them to be certifiably a few bricks short. Can't remember whose opinion I was reading but he indicated that voters might send a few Tea Partiers to Congress in 2010 but they will most likely send them back home in 2012.
Better we should know where they are, Jody. Just like FAUX News.
That's right, Anna Molly. Reminds me of the fact that belonging to radical groups is allowed because the Government would rather know who they are. My guess is, some of these groups and people are already on the FBI watch list. Bachman and King would implode at the thought.

I remember seeing that. I think it's the one where the "Tart Tundra Queen", that'd be Failing Sarah in this case, has an oil tanker capsize near Liberty Island after she decimated all the men she made love to?
Lordy, lordy, it is fun watching the GOPers spin their way around denying unemployment benefits. President Obama uncorked the genie bottle this morning. Just caught Mike Pence trying to convince Chris Matthews that he really does support the American people.... This is when Chris Matthews is at his best, he rarely lets anyone off the hook when it is something he believes and Matthews believes the unemployed must be helped.
Jody I have to somewhat disagree on this point. I saw the interview and thought for a second that Chris had him on the ropes but I don't believe he got the question answered fully. Pence just kept rolling and covering up on the ropes and Chris finally let him be able to dance. The republicans cannot say what their plan is because they don't have one. They can't say which program(s) they will cut to help the deficit because they have not thought it through. They are gambling on the low information voters to be charmed by their "catch phrases and buzz words" that Frank Luntz has given them to be able to win the elections without ever giving their plan of action.
We should be ashamed of ourselves for falling for such a tactic and allowing those that use them to be in charge of this country's government. Dispicable.
Matthews is still catching crap for his 'thrill up my leg' comment during the campaign, and is bending over backwards to smack Obama and give the GOBP a platform. He's like Ratigan - he's never met a mirror he didn't love...
K Mac OK. You are correct, Pence never really answered but Matthews did keep pushing before finally giving up, I wish he had kept at it. Still, it was fun watching Pence dance around and spew his spin. Hard to imagine these guys actually think they can avoid the conversation but they sure try--what is harder to imagine is that too many voters buy it.
Jody
Actually, Republican Conference Chairman Mike Pence joined the Tea Bagger Circus. Gosh I can't stop saying circus. The more there are; the more oddballs Keith will have to point out.
No Feisty
I wait for on demand. My grandson and sons drive me crazy with the movies. I bought my grandson those long claws. I didn't know what they were. I really wish I hadn't let him him suck me in to that clumsy awkward toy. I'll probably not post tomorrow because the show I'm looking forward to is at the Federal building. I hope I can get in. Haha
Oh you just know Bev... it's gonna get good! lmao
K Mac in Okla
Do you sense some jealousy on Bchmann's part?
If you are talking about jealousy between she and Palin, yes, I have thought that she has some hidden feelings that we may not know about. I think she craves for the attention that Palin is receiving and wants to get in on the action.
Same as the republican feelings against the President.
Wouldn't it be some sense of Karma if the Tea Party fractured the Republican Party to the point that they (Rep) would be almost irrelevant in the political spectrum?
I hope the tea party destroys the GOP for good. thgey are use less anyway.they say this is not right but they want say what is right. I hope our President forces them to say what is right.
