House Minority Leader John Boehner today called a moratorium on new federal regulations, a day after the Senate passed sweeping reforms to regulate the financial industry after the nation's 2008 financial collapse.
"I think having a moratorium on new Federal regulations is a great idea," Boehner said. "[It] sends a wonderful signal to the private sector that they are going to have some breathing room. I think there is a way to do this with an exemption for those emergency regulations that may be needed or some particular agency or another. If the American people knew that there was going to be a moratorium for a year, that the federal government wasn't going to issue thousands of more regulations, it would give them some breathing room."
But a caution to Boehner and Republicans who agree with him: The public wants more regulation, not less.
According to last month's NBC/WSJ poll, 65% said they wanted more regulation for the oil industry (versus 16% who want less); 57% want more regulation for Wall Street firms (compared with 15% who want less); 53% want more regulation for big corporations (versus 21% who want less); and 52% want more regulation for the health-care industry (compared with 27% who want less).
Only regarding small business was the public divided on having more regulation versus less.
*** UPDATE *** Boehner spokesman Michael Steele emails this response to First Read: "I think the context that he made it clear that such a moratorium would not impact new regulations that are an appropriate response to the tragedy in the Gulf is fair, and important."

Well said, Terry!
Boehner consistently offers obstructive suggestions, without any positive merit, to get attention and to criticize whatever the opposition is doing to correct the problems. It is absolutely crystal clear that he, and for that matter most of the Republican Party, have their political ambitions placed above all else, without conscience and at all costs. The obvious arrogance and obnoxiousness he conducts himself with is enough to cause anyone to question his integrity and motivation. Boehner, McConnell, Kyl and others, like Limbaugh, Beck, Palin,,, are literally paid 'puppets' for Special Interests and the influential, powerful and extremely wealthy few, their strong supporters, and they just boldly and aggressively perform without conscience or honesty as their 'strings are pulled'. To either ignore or accept this is to possibly allow a return to 'more of the same', their supporters' actual goal, which brought us the problems we have.
John Boehner is untouched by policies that hurt people. He doesn't have to fight for a livinglife without worry of banks changing rules in the middle of a game or people needing a job midway through life. People like him I despise and wonder how he got elected. I have yet to see a bunch of Republicans in Congress gathering together and bringing forth to Obama some solutions to our problems here & abroad. It would be great to see government work like this. Mr President we think this would help our people with this plan of ours or we would like to try something out with Afghanistan & the Taliban. We have a half government the other half that is to serve the people are serving their self trying to sell the people nothing but jive talk how the other half is harming more then helping. They stand on the sidelines rooting for no one. Doing something even if it turns out wrong or right is better then doing nothing at all. The Republican government needs governed by the people and I sure as hell don't mean the Tea Party Which is just like a big health insurance company breaking into splinter groups with a different name the same boss. If they think this is the new way to get back in office by doing absolutely nothing, but slamming the only functioning part of our government then beware because they have no intention of helping people only those that have money to offer to them run ads for their election. This is what our government turned into. If you can't scratch their back they don't need you. This is the dirtiest politicking I have seen in my lifetime. Boehner needs to be sent to a island with no boat & a 2000 tubes of copper tone with a body size mirror & gay Graham should be sent there as well to apply it to Boehner. He shows up at everything just to get pictures of himself pretending all along he is actually a hands on Senator. Where is the rest of them, sitting on the sidelines doing nothing. Regulate the Republicans, make them do something or get them replaced.
I just LOVE watching PMSNBC's Mr. Ed show:
He just had African-American Rep. Jim Clyburn, the number three person in the House leadership, on and he referred to Boehner as "being off the reservation" on this issue. A TOTALLY prejudiced, racist comment that is very offensive to Native Americans who were here thousands of years before Uncle Jim's ancestors. Imagine Uncle Jim's and all the lefty liberal's OUTRAGE if a Native American referred to him as being "off the plantation".
Let's see if all the PC lefty liberals out there and the NAACP call Uncle Jim out on this. Not likely, LOL!!!
Dude, "off the reservation" is a commonly used phrase in the political world. Once again illustrating how hard the Right is working to promote a narrative of "reverse discrimination" in order to pursue a new Southern Strategy that makes REAL racists feel all warm and cozy.
"Dude, "off the reservation" is a commonly used phrase in the political world'
So, YOUR Native American racism is "acceptable"??.
Exhibit A and proof that Liberalism is an incurable mental illness. LMAO@U!!!!
I have seen "Off the Reservation" used to describe a rouge CIA agent in the papers here a few months back. I personally do not care for this phrase. There are many out there that can be misunderstood even by the best meaning people. We just have to be careful what we say (type). If it looks like it ay be misunderstood it is probably a good idea not to use it.
Forgive me for not being able to articulate any better than many of you already have as to why John Boehner should NOT be re-elected this year. So much of what has already been posted rings so true.
We are supposed to elect people that will represent us in congress. It is so sad that so many people in this district mistakenly send Boehner time after time when he does so little to represent the people that live here. I can't understand how they think this man's actions will make their life better. We have towns that are really struggling because of this man's misrepresentation.
But there is a chance for us to change things this time around. I have met the man running against Boehner this year, and can honestly say I would be proud to have Justin Coussoule represent me in Washington.
Here is a plea to all the people that have posted here that would also like to see Boehner removed from office. Please help support Justin Coussoule for congress www.coussouleforcongress.com
They naysayers might claim that Justin has no record in politics, but I would much rather have a decent honest man represent me than the zero that is there now.
Justin CAN win in this district - There are many, many more Independent voters than solid republicans. What we need to do is get the word out about Justin Coussoule and then work to get out the vote. If we can get the same turn out than we did in 2008, we can really do something positive for this area.

Um...say what? That's what we used to call a "migraine sentence" back when I taught English. The more you parse it to discover meaning, the sicker you become. Doesn't the Republican party have one good articulate writer in its population to speak for louts like Boehner?
