Manchin to make Senate appointment by Friday

From NBC's Kelly O'Donnell
Earlier today, West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin released special session legislation which will clarify the state code on the succession process for the vacant senate seat left due to the passing of longtime Senator Robert Byrd.

Aides say Manchin will call the Legislature into special session to consider the legislation starting noon Thursday, July 15. The governor is expected to make an appointment, to fill the senate seat temporarily, by 5 p.m. this Friday.

An aide to the governor says, "This bill would merely clarify the state code so that there is no question that we could have a special primary and special general election."

How is the Democrat going to find a way to mess this up? Mrs. Manchin the new Senator? I think I'm starting to scare myself.

OMG, First Readers, and Chuck, Mark, and Domenico...did any of you catch the opening segment of "The Ed Show" today?

Host Ed Schultz completely eviscerated Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid over Reid's remarks about President Obama's lack of willingness to mix it up with Republicans. Ed's first guest, DCCC Chairman Rep Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), clearly was unprepared for his discussion with Schultz. To me, it looked like he couldn't wait to make an exit.

He was followed immediately by Democratic pundit Bill Press, who promptly agreed with Schultz that Obama was too timid...and offered his own observation that no one, Democrat or Republican, is afraid of President Obama.

If I were part Sharron Angle's political team, I'd try to have an ad out before the end of the week, showing Schultz's demolition of Majority Leader Reid.

Wow...!

The wheels are really coming off, aren't they?

Everywhere but Fox News, we refer to this phenomena as objective coverage and measured balanced opinion. This strikes the wing-nuts as strange.

Greetings, 9/11 "truther" Paul...

I've missed you.

And, on the contrary, I too enjoyed The Ed Show today.

I agree...he's a real journalist, and he did a terrific job.

Angle wouldn't benefit much from running an ad which shows Democrats arguing amongst themselves. She is surely going to IMPLODE just like World Trade Center #7.

I have met Ed. He is a local product, started as a sports announcer. You will be surprised to learn that not very many years ago, he was a far right winger, and I used to debate him often. When I say far right, think Rush Limbaugh without being Rush crazy. He met his wife, she introduced him to the idea that a lot of people using homeless shelters were vets, he started talking with those guys, and much to my amazement, he quickly turned into a proud lib. Isn't it incredible what a good woman can accomplish?

The unfortunate thing about Ed's comment is that it failed to take into account the reason for Harry Reid's remarks. I caught that earlier by a guest on Hardball who said to understand the comment, it was important to consider the reason for it. Harry Reid was asked if he had any criticism of Pres Obama or something he would lilke to see from the Pres, Harry answered that on a "few" occasions he would like to have seen Pres Obama be more forceful with republicans--hardly the damning comment being portrayed by even the liberal pundits.

I'm not defending Harry Reid because he should have simply said no, not really. But once again the media, including Ed and Chris, have taken a remark out of context which is unfair to both the Pres and Reid.

MESSNBC's Mr. Ed Show is one of my favorites. There's nothing more Hillaryously funny than an angry liberal on a rant, and you can count on Mr. Ed to deliver on most shows. He reminds me of a far left wing Archie Bunker.

I watched part of this guys show last night and his little rant at the end of the show about how Republicans wont let the Dems add to the deficit with more unemployment money was repulsive.

When are the liberals and progressives going to realize that Americans dont mind paying unemployment insurance to those that need it but the government MUST find a way to do it with out borrowing more money?

The North Iowa Tea party, like many sympathizers of the movement, denounce media attempts to portray tea party members as extreme or outside the mainstream. On its website, the North Iowa Tea party links directly to a report by the conservative Media Research Center that decries the media’s characterization of Tea Party protesters as “‘ugly,’ ‘unruly,’ ‘nasty’ mobs, with reporters presenting the most odious images (such as pictures of Obama drawn as Hitler) as somehow representative of the entire group.” Ironically, despite disassociating themselves from Obama-Hitler comparisons in the past, the North Iowa Tea Party is now a leading propagator of this abhorrent image. Last week, they created a billboard that features President Obama “flanked” by Adolph Hitler and Vladimir Putin-

______________

Today, Senate candidate Marco Rubio (R-FL) released his economic platform, which he claims is a “a clear alternative to the anti-growth, anti-job creation economic policies coming out of Washington.” “We have reached a point in our history when we must decide if we are to continue on the free market, limited government path that has made us exceptional, or if we are prepared to follow the rest of the world down the road of government dependency,” he said.

The cuts that Rubio proposes would also spend trillions of dollars while overwhelmingly sending the benefits to the very rich. In fact, at the 2009 level, the estate tax only affects the richest 0.2 percent of households in the country. So Rubio would spend billions on the hope that a tiny percentage of the population creates some jobs. “Those 2001 and 2003 tax cuts didn’t seem to help America avoid the recession, and Jeb Bush’s effort to cut taxes in Florida didn’t seem to help this state avoid becoming one of the worst hit by that recession,” wrote Kyle Munzenrieder at the Miami New Times.

Basically, Cantor is willing to go out and claim the stimulus isn’t doing any good, but he’s unwilling to take the tough position of asking businesses and governments to give back this supposedly useless money. Like at least 113 of his colleagues, Cantor has been a stimulus hypocrite, touting projects that have been made possible thanks to federal funding he opposed.

ThinkProgress also spoke to several representatives from companies at the job fair who said that they disagreed with Cantor’s views on the stimulus and unemployment benefits.

This is the GOP that people want back in power? They're disgraceful.

The North Iowa Tea Party is primary in Representative Steve King's district--I need say no more since King is the perfect picture of the ugliest segment within the Tea Party.

The Hitler/Obama/Putin billboard was on TV here last night. It really embodies the worst of Tea Party histeria. Jody is right, unfortunately. IA-5 in the last redistricting became a conglomeration of the most backward, reactionary areas of the state. It's really more eastern Nebraska than western Iowa, which also helps explain Ben Nelson. By the standards of that area he's a raging Liberal and only holds his post thanks to some Liberal areas in Omaha.

The problem with your reasoning John B is that the billboard is accurate. Obama is doing many of the same things Hitler and Marx tried to do (minus the whole concentration camp situation).

He is trying to make the US a socialist country and the thing that makes me proudest is America is fighting back with a resounding "Hell no"

And this from someone who is proud that his state gets a huge bang for its buck in Federal dollars. But, Larry, since you attended Liberty "University" who boasts of an almost 97% acceptance rate, and who has as its goal not to educate thoughtful young men and women, but to indoctrinate them in a myopic world view, I would not expect you to understand the hypocrisy of your position. Poor North Dakota would dry up and blow away without the infusion of bucks from the Feds.

John, I keep hoping someday, that Larry posts about his pride in North Dakota, and how he rationalizes the Bank of North Dakota, which really is socialism.

I''m still having a hard time reconcilling the venom directed towards Obama and his 'big government' by the red neck red staters in the gulf and their having their hands out for free money 'extorted' from BP...you'd think these people would be pulling themselves up by their bootstraps rather than begging for jobs and handouts...and the teeth on those people

Manchin decides to nominate someone after that POS Ben Nelson finally sees the light. Unfortunately this dog and pony show comes to late. The Repubs are going to continue spewing their venom, changing the hearts and minds of some of those around them. The Dems haven't figure that when you walk lock step like the Repubs, thing will get done. Its like herding cats w/ them. I don't think that Harry Reid will lose his seat, it will be close because his own state hates him. Of course we have John Kyl of AZ saying the unemployment benefits need to be paid for, and they do. But in the same breath want to extend the Bush tax cuts which aren't paid for and shouldn't be and the idiot doesn't see the difference. And he's smiling as he says this stuff. Arizona being sued by the Feds because of their Immigration Law may racial profile people. But if the Feds actually did their jobs, the States wouldn't need to enact such laws. This country needs help but w/ both parties at a standstill and the Repubs only to looking to score political points and take the country back to the good ole days of Bush Cheney. More deregulation everywhere and more tax cuts for the rich while the rest of get our trickle down ( golden shower) economy.
