If it's Friday, it's time for another First Read Top 10 list -- this time our monthly look at what we consider the Top 10 Senate takeovers (i.e., one party losing control of a Senate seat and the other party gaining it). The big mover here is Florida, given the growing chance that Charlie Crist (I) could very well win this race. Caveats: The three-way contest is highly unpredictable, and we still don't know with which party Crist will caucus. But if the GOP nominee, Marco Rubio, loses the race, it's hard to see how that isn't a takeover. The number in parentheses is our ranking from last month.
1. North Dakota (1): John Hoeven (R), come on down.
2. Delaware (2): This race has been quiet, and that only favors Mike Castle (R).
3. Arkansas (3): Passage of Wall Street reform will be a feather in Blanche Lincoln's (D) cap, but she remains the underdog to John Boozman (R).
4. Indiana (4): Brad Ellsworth is up with his first TV ad criticizing lobbyists (see: Coats, Dan). But what is the bigger albatross in Indiana right now: being a lobbyist or being a supporter of the Democratic agenda?
5. Nevada (5): Is Harry Reid (D) vs. Sharron Angle (R) the purest Senate toss-up in the country? The winner might need just 45% (with "None of the above" on the ballot).
6. Pennsylvania (7): If Nevada isn't a pure toss-up, then this race probably is. Joe Sestak's (D) advantage: the Dem registration edge in the state. Pat Toomey's (R): the national environment and the GOP edge in the gubernatorial contest.
7. Florida (unranked): The longer the BP story plays out and the closer the Meek-Greene Dem primary becomes, it's hard to believe how that doesn't help Charlie Crist's indie bid.
8. Illinois (6): We're unsure what's worse -- Alexi Giannoulias' (D) bank woes or Mark Kirk's (R) constant misrepresentations about his record?
9. Washington (10): The GOP now has chances to win in California, Washington, and Wisconsin, but Dino Rossi (R) is probably the strongest of all the Republicans running in these blue states.
10. Ohio (8): Lee Fisher (D) has a serious money disadvantage vs. Rob Portman (R), but does Ted Strickland in the gubernatorial contest push Fisher over the finish line?
The other races we're watching (in order of likely takeover): Colorado, Kentucky, Missouri, Wisconsin, California, New Hampshire, Connecticut. Wow, this competitive Senate field gets bigger and bigger, and you can now add West Virginia. Oh, and this doesn't include Louisiana, which could pop given the intense media scrutiny David Vitter is under these days.

I see the GOP picking up a net of 6 Senate seats. That doesn't count Charlie Crist winning Florida (my prediction). Who knows how Crist will vote? Interestingly, down here, the only ads I've been seeing have been for the GOP Governor's primary. Of course, rumor has it that LeBron James may throw his hat in the ring for Senate, and my guess is that he'd get 98% of the vote south of Orlando. Heck, given all of the hype, he may run for Senate and Governor at the same time and still average 30 points a game and win the NBA Championship. Can a LeBron Presidency be far behind? We may need a 2 hour ESPN special to explore that question? (Ahhhh...nothing like the smell of fresh sarcasm on a Friday!) ;-)
Frank-realclearpolitics, which averages the polls, has the gop picking up seven senate seats; they give Florida to Crist, and don't count that in the seven. I don't know-I wonder if he does pull it out.
Russ Feingold is in the toughest race of his Senate career, and I can also see Wisconsin changing hands. As for Patty Murray-I've never understood how she got re-eleted after her "Osama is popular because he builds daycare centers and women's health clinics". The woman is a pure, unadulterated idiot. She is also in a close race, but that state is so liberal, I wouldn't put any money on that one changing hands.
By the way-I agree about the LeBron hype. It was ridiculous, to say the least.
Morning Grimey!
I love the smell of fresh sarcasm any day...as long as it's high quality! ;0)
I'm glad LeBron took a pass on the Bulls - no one will ever come close to filling Michael's Nikes here in Chi-Town!
And for what it's worth I'm rooting for Crist...
Ps: Time for the Margarita's yet?
No Joe...I consider Real Clear Politics one of the best sites out there. They do a good job of cutting through the partisan spin and presenting facts.
Feisty. Yeah, I think if LeBron went to Chicago, the MJ - LBJ comparison would never have stopped. I jokingly sent an e-mail to the head of my homeowners association last night asking that my street name be changed to "LeBron James Way". With Crist, I'm still not sure how to vote here. This is one instance where the debates will help. I really like Crist as governor. I'd just like to know how he plans on voting as a member of the Senate. As for the margs....t-minus 5 and a half hours!!! ;-)
Have a great weekend!
Fiesty-I'm not really a basketball fan-I'm a baseball and hockey girl-but my husband said exactly the same thing you did-the LeBron would NEVER be able to live up to Michael Jordan, so he would not go where he would always be number 2.
I can't wait to tell him that a real Chicagoan said the same thing!
Cheers Grimey!
NJNB: As you know I'm a hockey fan but a football fan more than anything else! Something about contact sports...lol
Give kitty some cat nip for me... have you ever tried the catnip bubbles? They're like the ones for kids but cat nip scented! Mine love to chase them around the room until they pop!
I suspect the Greer trial will not help Crist a great deal. Grimey, are there debates scheduled yet? Crist is going to have to answer the question of with whom he will caucus, and 'the people of Florida' is not going to cut it going into the fall.
What is all this "MJ played for the Bulls" talk? Magic Johnson played his entire career with the Lakers :-).
Rasmussen's tracking of the Senate races shows Republicans poised to pick up 8 Seats seats held by Democrats, with no Republican seats in danger. Plus 8 for the Republicans.
An additional 2 Senate Democrat seats are too close to call - Washington and Wisconsin are within 1% point, so the energy of the base will be key, and likely favors the Republicans.
Rasmussen showed the Democrats holding a 7% advantage in the 2008 Congressional elections, which translated into nice pickup for the Dems that year. Now the Republicans hold a 6% advantage, a net swing of 13% in favor of the Republicans. It doesn't look good for the Democrats.
But here's the story that nobody is looking at yet. In 2012 there are 22 Democrat Senate seats up for re-election, versus only 11 Republican seats. Since the National Debt at the end of Fiscal Year 2012 is projected to be about $16 Trillion (versus $10.02 Trillion for 2008), the free-spending Democrats will likely be in for a bad year then as well.
Roy,
Say the Republicans win back everything in 2012. By 2016 they will all be replaced again because they have no plan, no idea on how to fix the big issues that currently face this nation.
They still don’t know how to drive and their GPS is broken.
Dennis I cannot believe that you are implying the Democrats will lose so many seats in 2010 is because of their plan, or could you be implying the reasons the Democrats are being kicking out by the people is because of the plans that the Democrat have put in place most that are down right crazy. JUST WONDERING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dennis, Columbus, Ohio
The plan is amazingly simple.
Just stop digging a deeper (debt) hole that you have to climb out of.
Roy. The GOPers are the ones that dug the hole in the first place. Do you honestly think they will not do just as they always have from Reagan on--cut taxes, grow government and deficit spend. If the GOP had been fiscally conservative, they would not have doubled the debt in the first place leaving little option for really fixing the economy in times like these. Governments must deficit spend during recesssions and depressions but the GOP deficit spent in good times as well creating a huge problem.
Jody, Iowa "Roy. The GOPers are the ones that dug the hole in the first place."
Yes, Bush let spending get too high, but remember that Democrats controlled Congress (and spending) for Bush's last 2 years in office.
Here's an interesting fact. Bush increased the Public Debt by $2.4 Trillion in 8 years ($300 Billion in the last 2 weeks of Fiscal Year 2008 for TARP), but Obama increased it by $2.8 Trillion just through March of this year.
Bush's average spending over 8 years was $2.396 Trillion per year.
Obama's average spending for his first 2 years will be $3.580 Trillion per year - 49% higher. Obama makes Bush look like a cheapskate.
Half of the money spent in the bush eight years was spent in the last two democratic majority years.
It's come to a point where the vote in November is going to be a yes or no -
YES to more massive spending and government growth and incompetence, which people voted in '08 to END and instead got more of - in multiples ....
OR
NO to those things.
I completely agree that the Republicans from '00 to '06 were a total disaster - at least some of them appear to have learned their lesson and the ones that haven't won't be reelected either, ie Bennett in UT.
IF they win back one or both houses of Congress, they're not going to have much leash from anyone in the form of tolerance for continued bullcrap. If the Dems keep one or both houses, and continue on their reckless spending, UNEMPLOYMENT driven decision making - in 2012 the WHOLE shootin' match goes to Republicans. And that's not good either.
Talk about threading a needle.
IMO, best case scenario: Reps win back the House, and 5-7 seats but NOT the majority in the Senate.
In the final analysis, they all suck. Which is a shame.
Historically the Republicans will pick up some seats. But I doubt it will be a landslide, especially if Americans remember that Republicans made the mess we've been in, and that they offer nothing expect the same old trickle-down voodoo economics they've always supported.
In regard to Nevada, it isn't so much losing Harry Reid that concerns me as someone like Angle being put in a position of influence. I am astonished that she is ahead in the polls. No matter how bad the economy is in Nevada, it was because of people who are backward thinking like her. I can't believe folks in Nevada aren't terrified by her. Here are some of her comments:
If the far-right fanatics aren't successful at the ballot box, they should use "Second Amendment remedies" (take up arms). Then take Harry Reid out.
If a girl becomes pregnant from incest, she should make lemonade out of lemons.
The escrow being established for clams by victims of the BP oil spill is just a "slush fund."
Wow, just wow! People of Nevada, vote for a write in if you must, but please don't impose this crazy person on the nation.
sandyshores "Half of the money spent in the bush eight years was spent in the last two democratic majority years."
This is only partially true. The average Federal spending for Bush's last two years (when Democrats controlled the purse strings) was $2.856 Trillion per year, 27% higher per year than Bush's average for his first 6 years of $2.243 Trillion per year.
The unfortunate truth is that, when Congress controls the purse strings, the President can only sign the authorizations or veto them. If the President actually had "line item veto" authority, then he/she would have better control, but such is not the case.
$640k for a green truck that runs for 2 hours, $693k per stimulus job, $161b spent on june 30th (more than the entire 2007 defecit) a new $5m jobs program for wife-beaters getting out of jail, 16m taxpayers looking for a job today.......and our extorter-in-chief unable to solve any complex problem. as the old southern expression goes "know alot of peanut farmers who caint read, but never met one who caint count. voting booths allow folks to express opinion without public retribution; gop +12.
MICHELLE OBAMA: And Barack knows that we are going to have to make sacrifices, we are going to have to change our conversation, we're going to have to change our traditions, our history. We're going to have to move into a different place. And they are doing it...
Does anyone ever stop and think about what the overspending of the past year and a half will do to our country or is that what you want?
MAW-1297690 "Does anyone ever stop and think about what the overspending of the past year and a half will do to our country or is that what you want?"
It depends on who you are asking. I did my own projections of revenues, expenditures and deficits, based on the spending proposals by Obama in his budget for the next 10 years, and it shows the National Debt increasing from $10 Trillion when he was elected to over $30 Trillion by 2020. That would be about $400,000 for a typical family of four.
Greece has a bankruptcy crisis because their debt was over 100% of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP), but we were at 92% of GDP for 2009, and will probably be over 10% for 2010. Obama's spending will increase it to over 160% of GDP within 10 years.
By way of comparison, it averaged only 63.45% of GDP for Clinton, and 62.89% of GDP for G W Bush.
Do people really care?
For the 53% of Americans that actually pay Federal income taxes, yes - because they foot the bill.
For the 47% of Americans that pay NO Federal income tax - probably not, because someone else has to pay the taxes required to pay the interest on the debt (we are much too far in debt to ever expect it to be paid back). Actually, a great many of the 47% that pay no income taxes receive refunds even though they pay no taxes (thanks to "credits" the government has put in place to buy votes).
If we required ALL Americans to pay even some nominal amount of income taxes, they would likely be more concerned about unnecessary spending, but the liberals hate that idea. It's called "having something to lose", or "having some skin in the game".
Unfortunately, almost half of the families get what amounts to "free lottery tickets", so they like getting something for nothing, and will continue to vote for those that keep the freebies coming.
Welcome to "wealth redistribution" and "Change we can believe in".
The above post should have said;
"Greece has a bankruptcy crisis because their debt was over 100% of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP), but we were at 92% of GDP for 2009, and will probably be over 100% for 2010. Obama's spending will increase it to over 160% of GDP within 10 years."
I tried to correct it, but the change wouldn't take, and time ran out.
Crist will NOT win the Florida vote...he is too buddy buddy with Obama and spent too many photo ops with him in Louisianna instead of taking care of his own coast! He bailed on his party....He is toast!
I will continue to vote for the party that promotes good economic sense. Spending plans that package with revenue projections, and some debt reduction. No matter what party is promoting that concept. I just wish that one party would actually do that before we are spent into oblivion with no way out. Perhaps we are already there.
And I agree that Bush spent too much during his Presidency, but I didn't hear any Democrats screaming for it to be in check, and I didn't see them passing legislation to reduce it during Bush's last 2 years. I understand that during recessions one policy is to overspend to get us back on track. Now that has happened, I have yet to hear about bringing that under control by the Democrats. If it worked, we have to pull back. If it didn't, is there any sense to do it again?
Time to tarrif imports and get the revenue back. We used to get that revenue by taxing working people and the companies that employeed them. We can do the same thing by taxing imports, and perhaps creating some jobs by opening up the gross margins a bit for US companies.
This is the new reality TV!
Not saying I'm not sucked into it, either - it's just, how many times can we pick these candidates? Who do they poll for this data?
I know it's just a frenzy building effort (aka: ratings) with the climax on November 2nd, but doesn't this constant status reporting tend to jade the whole process? Election overload!
Once again, there is a ton of time politically between now and November 2. I am really not at all concerned with polls, trends, likely voters, projections, etc. The only thing I need to know is who received more votes on November 2... End of story...
I think I would like to see crist win the seat. maybe, just just maybe the commonsense approach is not an act to get elected. maybe just maybe, he will vote for the American middle class.
Did I miss something? What middle class is left? I understand (from my grandson) that anyone not making at least $50k per year isn't doing "very well". I tend to want to agree with him since with my $700 check fromSS and the -1% interest on my savings, and the chicken plant losin' our retirement fund, I make less than welfare pays in some states.
Please tell me? Who IS middle class after 16 years of GOP "balancing" our budget? The only time we've had a balanced budget in the last 24 years the husband of that lady (the one Obama beat out to be the president ?) was in office. I think he may have been a democrat?
And I remember her taking a whole lot of guff off some dirty mouthed GOP leader. because she tried to get all of us to thinking about what medical costs we might be having to deal with and some such. Right?
I had hoped - more than a little - that she might get elected since she's been over that road and survived. Seems to me being president might need someone to have some real live "experience", and she had that economist guy she was married to on her side - you know, the one who balanced the budget once upon a time?
But you'all got a very bright (but maybe not all that wised up) almost black man in office and with all the GOP stuff you'all are dumpin' on him looks like it's gonna be too deep for him to be able to swim it. More's the pity for all of us.
Seems a shame, somehow.
Dream on Leon, he doesn't care about the middle class anymore.
A couple of unknown factors - (1) the undercounting of minorities in national polling and (2) whether or not Democratic national leadership will wake up, push the alarm bell and re-energize a comatose base (who frankly seems to have mistakenly felt that, once Obama was elected, their job was done and they could take the next year or two off).
I believe there's still time and that - coupled with compelling arguments about "Choices", "The Big Picture", "Substance over Symbols" etc. - Democratic candidates will do far better than the CW currently suggests.
Jeff, you obviously did not take statistics in college. When polling is conducted, (good polling, that is), the pool is created to make certain that the entire electorate is represented. Therefore, no, minorities are NOT underrepresented.
It might interest you to know that the old canard about cell phones is false, as well. All of the major polling organizations build in a cell phone segment. In fact, when they are looking for that pool, if the answer to the question as to whether you have a landline is yes, the call is terminated.
Good polling attempts to be representative. Each poll has a weighting target that the firm believes represents the electorate, each has a margin of error, and each is evaluated by outside groups. (At the moment, Quinnipiac is under scrutiny, because their numbers and weighting are questionable. If they are serious about their polling reputation, they will address the issues.)
The fact is that there is a vast pool of voters who ONLY vote in presidential elections-and those voters tend to vote Democratic. Add to that that presidents with popularity numbers under fifty percent lose seats in the mid-terms, that 'single issue' voters WILL come out to vote against that issue in mid-terms, (i.e., HCR), and that a bad economy ALWAYS translates into losses for the party in power, and you have the makings of a Democratic debacle that is going to make 1994 look like a cakewalk for Dems.
You don't have to believe the polls; however, you will have to live with the outcome.
I believe you are entirely correct when you say we will have "choices", and should see the "big Picture"....and definitely "substance". If everyone votes with those things in mind...we wont have a Democrat elected in the 2010 elections, and 2012 we will send Obama into retirement. Here is why...
Transparency and Government as usual. Can ANYONE seriously say that Obama/The Demo's are better than Bush was with these two issues? How much double dealing/backroom dealing do you need slapping you in the face? The recent appointment (recess) of The Medicare Czar was a perfect example. They never scheduled him for a hearing, The Dems are in charge of scheduling but Obama didn't want his VIEWS on HCR to be publicly brought out in hearings. They of course blamed it on Repubs, but now the truth comes out later even Dems are upset he bypassed them. blah blah blah, the Left will say "Bush did it" , they always fall back that way. But, Bush didn't do it to avoid the American people from learning the truth on his appointees VIEWS.
How about the DoJustice dropping the Voter intimidation case against the New Black Panthers? Is there a more blatant example of this than what was shown on video during the elections? But DoJ sues Arizona for enforcing our Federal laws on Immigration that Obama has said is too expensive to enforce and wants to ignore?????
The HCR mandate, which IS unconstitutional, his DoJ is arguing in court that it is now a tax...even though Obama went on national tv during interviews and said that it was definitely NOT a tax.
I could go on for days with this but most people won't open their eyes to see the truth...they are just blinded by Parties, Repub/Dem etc...but If we don't wake up we will be Venezuela or Cuba before we can blink.
Nice to see you made is Chester... but this is First Read NOT Faux & Freaks and your black panther conspiracy theory was debunked days ago...
REAL news outlets value their credibility unlike the jokers over on Faux Entertainment!
Their just trying to make themselves feel better Feisty by convincing themselves how well they'll do in November. Maybe if they keep say it long enough they'll start believing what they say.
To Feisty & Mo-
ooooh, nice try, but you missed! I haven't believed the pathetic main stream media since 2008 when the freakishly sold out to be Obama's mistress, slobbering over him like a 2 yr old with ice cream. It would be funny if it weren't so darn true...
Do you really expect anyone to take you seriously with a name like Dorkfish? LMFAO!
Thanks for playing & we have some lovely parting gifts for you!
Hey Feisty....not sure where you get your news from, but the DOJ DID drop the black panther case.
Perhaps you failed to read your Messiah's books...here are a few quotes, straight from the horses mouth....
From Dreams of My Father : "I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother's race."
From Dreams of My Father: "It remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names."
From Audacity of Hope: "I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."
FedUpFred:
LMAO - try posting the entire quotes and not the 'cliff note version' supplied to you lemmings by Faux & Freaks and the Grand Poobah Oxycontin addicted Limpballs will ya?
Maybe then someone would take you a tich more serious!
You guys crack me up... :0)))
Facts are Facts Feisty, no matter how you slice it! He said it...and thats good enough for me! Garbage in....Garbage out!
Think Progress:
Rep. Bob Inglis (R-SC), who lost recently in his primary run-off for the Republican nomination to keep his seat in Congress, is speaking out about the influence of hate radio and right-wing fear mongering in the Republican Party. In an interview with the AP, Inglis called out reactionaries like Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck for spreading “demagoguery” and hatred in society:
Americans believe the crap that comes out of their propaganda hateful mouths. Americans mind you - believe it. This is stuff that came out of Nazi Germany (sorry Mark & Domenico for the comparison, ugh). But the people in this country truly are pathetic for being so uninformed, gullible, naive.
The attention span in this country is zero. And we're talking about grown up adults here, not children. They just want to be entertained. It used to be that entertainment meant going to a baseball game, a concert, the movies.
Now they love to hear hate and lies. And of course, finger pointing. But never at themselves. Never questioning their own lack of knowledge. What happened to this country? What the frig happened? I can't believe it.
No fair and balanced media for one. Like it used to be. The inmates are running the asylum. Most of them are white male. The few females are screwy. Absolutely screwy. Just like the men. And a willing media to feed this crap.
I read last night that Chris Matthews asked Pat Buchanan if he agreed with Glenn Beck that President Obama's agenda was on getting back at people for slavery? Chris Matthews asked this? Really!?!
Who THINKS like that? Who would ask such a stupid question?
Keith Olbermann. What a gem. And from what I can see, on his own with trying diligently to look into the camera and say what all INTELLIGENT media hosts are supposed to say - that this is all BS. There was a time perhaps in the late 1960's or early 1970's when everyone in this country would understand Keith's program and would have appreciated what he was trying to do.
And now? They think he's the uninformed one. I have not heard him utter ONE SINGLE LIE in all these years. Not one. Yet people don't care. They love being lied to. They love having a figure to hate and blame for all their stupid decisions in life.
So President Obama gets to clean up decades of mess in 2 years that WE The People help mess up by greed and bigotry. Two years. My oh my.
Supposedly, the Pennsylvania Dutch have a saying; we grow too soon old and too late smart!
It's some scary sh!t Pat... You got MY vote!
You know how I feel about Chris Matthews and the resident MSNBC racist Buchanon!
For further evidence take a peek at Suzen's comment below... *shakes head*
Pat, a couple of corrections:
Please, just offer some balance here.
John Inglis proved he was unfit for office with one statement-when he compared this country, and the divide between Democrats and Republicans, to Sunni and Shia.
Talk about nuts.
Pat, I see we are thinking alike again. I just posted this on the next thread at the exact same time! LOL
Great post Pat, right on. My wife's ex-husband thinks Beck is a genius and knows all. Thank God she saw the light years ago and dumped him. Limburger (not a spelling error) is also a piece of work. I truly believe he's the head of the Repug party. Scary huh?
Great post Pat, you've said what the majority are thinking.
Keith Olbermann exposes the idiocy of the likes of Glen Beck and Sarah Plain nightly! It does not matter to the pathetic creatures that hang on their every word.
It would be funny if it were not so scary.
Keith caught Glen Beck railing about there not being any video of the late Senator Byrd when he filibusted the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Beck was animated with all kinds of props about the MSM and lefties trying to re-write history. A sight to behold!
It took KO to point out to the Beckster that there was no video-taping in the Senate chambers until the 70’s. How pathetic is that? Beck does not even know the history of his own industry and people look to him for political edification!
There is so much hatred build up in the right wing of this nation. They are miserable people seeking validation. Beck and Limbaugh give it to them.
Pat:
To think "progress" we have to think "education". Thanks for laying it out straight and clear!
The greed and bigotry looks to be on top, but I suppose there are few who would like to be on top and can only put on a poor imatation. We always go to religious insults or what ever. We get fed by the media and have no ability to see the smoke screen. The greed is still rampant, can't wait for the change to sell my 20 yr old clunker and start working my image up to the top in my own minds eye. Had a saying in the city worker and government workers, SLOPPING IN THE TAX payers trough. Pig in a suit. The tax payer had better control the pigs at the trough. I guess if you idolize some one, it is easy to bask in their glory?????????????????????????????? The new slang throw em under the bus.
Polls consistently show the democrat ahead in OH, PA, IL and WA, and yet OH is below all the others??? How is this? Is this the same reality-challenged Charlie Cook school that says democrats will do bad no matter what the evidence says??
Rossi is in theory a strong candidate, but this isn't showing up in the polls. The democratic candidate in KY (also in theory strong) is closer to taking over that seat than Rossi is, and yet WA is on the list and KY isn't? Unsuprising.
Very scary times since NASA's new mission is to make Muslims feel good about their contribution.....to what I don't know.
Suzen,
Please adjust the straps on your foil hat. I think it may be cutting some circulation...
Disgusted- that came from OBAMA- not Suzen. You may want to catch up on the latest news...
Yeah, that really is the new number 1 priority of NASA- the make them (the Muslims) feel better about their contributions in science, math and engineering.
Oh yeah, Obama know's what he's doing...
That is part of NASA's goals for public outreach. Their goals for science and exploration are different, but he was speaking to one facet of NASA. And, if you think no good Republican would ever use NASA to try and unite the international community, Reagan tried it when he was president.
Pat Toomey's gonna have to run like hell away from some of the Club For Growth (who's growth do they encourage, anyway? Don't think it's mine!) positions. They won't play well in Philadelphia or Pittsburgh. Lose Philadelphia and Pittsburgh badly enough, you can kiss PA goodbye! This is a state that blew away Rick Santorum, giving him the record lowest percentage vote for an incumbent senator.
Disgusted-in-PA
Suzen,
Please adjust the straps on your foil hat. I think it may be cutting some circulation...
Here it is in Black and White from the LA Times right out of the mouth of Charles Bolden, Director of NASA
In the interview (full video below), Bolden reveals that even before the Democratic ...
... president offered him the job as top space official, Obama ordered that his "foremost" assignment was "to reach out to the Muslim world ... to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science, math and engineering."
Do you know what our numbering system with its base ten system is called Suzen? Riiiiiggggghhhtttttt! ARABIC numbers! 1,000 to 1,500 years ago, the Middle East was a scientific powerhouse! So, there ARE accomplihsments there! It's probably a waste of my time trying to moderate your fear-mongering blather.
In case your not aware NASA stands for National Aeronautics Space Administration........not NAMA National Agency of Muslim Appreciation.
Whoa Boy!
We got ourselves a 'live' one here today gang! :0)))
Just stating the facts Feisty................like I said before if its not on MSN it can still be true. Have a great day.......................and read all the news.
Suzen,
Judging from your posts here this morning - you wouldn't recognize a fact if it hit you squarely between the eyes...
I'm fully aware of what NASA stands for! I could be taking all of my sustenance outta brown paper bags and have more on the ball than you!
Wingnut news reporting procedures;
1) Make sh!t up
2) B!t@h like hell that the media's not covering your made-up sh!t!!
Typical teabagger, take one sentence from a story make up the rest and start whining about it.
Suzen you need to move up one post there is a couple of guys up there named Daniel and DL 13. Their waiting for you on aisle twelve of the Piggly Wiggly. The manger promised that if they could get one more to join them he'd give you'll a volume discount on the non stick tinfoil. Where you buy the straps is your own business
Independent, your comment is disgusting. It is arrogant and uncalled for.
James James James Here I am trying to save the lady some money and you are going to say nasty things about me. I'm just trying to set her up with a couple of fellows that she may be able to make a connection with. Who knows romance and true love may blossom. BTW while I may at times be rude, crude and socially unacceptable I am very rarely accused of being arrogant. Why in certain circles I am known as down right humble.Have a good evening and come back and see us sometime you hear.
James, James they are just being good deciples of Comrade Alinsky!! Their sole source of ...News?, is msnbc, a network whose viewer ratings fall below the cartoon channel!!
Digusted in PA.....quit drinking the koolaid
Let's see...socialist Berwick now in charge of Medicare & Medicaid and NASA spending money to make muslims feel good about themselves. Looks like they feel pretty good--they're shopping at Gucci and drive Mercedes and are buying lots of commercial property...even trying to build a mosque across from the where the World Trade buildings USED to be. I do think they feel pretty good about themselves. The people loosing their businesses around the Gulf and the people throughout the country without jobs...now who is caring whether they feel good about themselves??? Businesses being taxed to death so they don't hire anyone...hmmmmmmmmm... What is this country coming to? Yes, let's worry about muslims feeling good.
Geeze MAW... get your head out of your a@@ and come up for air once in awhile will ya?
Trust me you'll think a hell of a lot straighter!
What about MAWs post was factually incorrect, Feisty?
Or is this just more of the usual left wing bullcrap, where if you can't dispute the facts, launch a personal attack?
So far in this thread, NONE of your posts have been anything BUT that. Baseless claims that things that actually happened, didn't, and more baseless claims that things that didn't happen, did...
And personal attacks against people with whom you disagree.
And THIS, exactly THIS, is what will get Democrats thrown the hell OUT in November, because the MAJORITY of people in this country are damn sick and tired of the completely undeserved pomposity coming out of "you people".
You are not as smart as you think you are, and you prove it nearly every time you make a post with no substance.
It's really sort of a shame, because the Republicans don't deserve to win back control just because the Democrats suck more, and have arrogant, insulting and rather uniformed people for supporters.
See you in November.

Suzen,
Please adjust the straps on your foil hat. I think it may be cutting some circulation...

Just because MSN only tells you what they want you to hear does not mean it is not so.
It's pretty obvious that the Nevada race between Honest Harry Reid and Scary Sharry Angle has the biggest implications for the political future. The dopes of nope want to unseat Harry Reid as leader of the Senate so they can propel double chinned double lying Witch McConnell as leader. Scary Sharry Angle isn't really important as she'd just be a junior repugnant one Senator with no important committee appointment. Better believe the repugnant ones won't want this tea bagging crazy lady liar to have a prominent position where her wacko comments about eliminating Social Security and Medicare would scare off their old lazy geezer base of supporters.
Since Liberals and Labor have written off Traitor Blanche Lincoln and have no intention of wasting money supporting her inevitable loss that race isn't worth worrying about. Watch the next election cycle that Traitor Ben Nelson is up for reelection as Liberals and Labor are going to go after his seat and we're going to write him off even if he wins his primary. Traitor Ben Nelson's treacherous vote against extending unemployment benefits for the chronically unemployed thanks to our Bushwhacked economy will burn in our memories for years and we're just biding our time now until Traitor Ben needs our help and we just say no to helping him from becoming unemployed.
Don't jump your guns of the Liberal West going Braindead Red political pundits. Gnarly Karly Phony Fiorina won't beat Barbara Boxer and I doubt that Washington is going to go stupid either. Let's hope that the majority of real Americans aren't so stupid as to give the keys back to the same lamebrain conservative crowd who wrecked our economic bus in the first place.
Thanks for stating the big picture on why the Angle-Reid race is so important.
I'm a democrat and think it's disgraceful how the party leadership has written off Lincoln and probably will attempt to disown Nelson in 2012/14. It's similar but different than the Joe Liebermann situation. Both Nelson and Lincoln have a more conservative voting record. By voting in the way they have, they're reflecting their constituents views, which are not as liberal as the party leadership's. They vote along party lines for most issues, but diverged on health care and unemployment.
The Liebermann situation I can understand the party leadership's actions. He crossed a line when his voting record was more similar to a Republican's and campaigned for John McCain. Speaking at the RNC was the last straw.
If Angle and Fiorina win their races, they're one term senators. The best parallel I can think of is Carol Mosely Braun who served one term in Illinois during the mid 90s.
Thanks Eric for pulling these comments back on topic.
AF Your comment amounts to zero. Why is it NASA job to do Muslim outreach? I don't care one way or another but its one of these examples of political correctness gone wild. A complete departure from common sense.
When you used the cliche "political correctness", Alan, I figured you're not up to your usual standards. It's "common sense" that the earth is flat. It just doesn't happen to be true!
Yeah. "Political correctness" is a cliche'. A better term would be ABSOLUTELY FRIGGIN' RIDICULOUS. "to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science, math and engineering"........Really? Here's an idea: why don't we leave helping them feel good about themselves to them. This is one of those liberal idiocies that, were it not true, would make good satire and comedy about how silly and imbecilic liberals and their religion of PC are.
Farley, part of the war effort is a battle for hearts and minds. I don't think it'll hurt to let the majority of Muslims know that we don't consider them all to be cave dwellers with no appreciation of the uses of toilet paper.
'course, Farley, I've caught your act enough to know that you're a conscientous objector in a battle for hearts and minds!
AF,
Chuckles fails in the war for hearts and minds because one needs to have a mind in order to be able to fight for it.
To borrow a catch phrase... "A mind is a terrible thing to waste"
Reagan used NASA to connect with Russia. That seemed to work out ok. The wall did get torn down.
Can't find an actual video of it but it's here at 2:18.
It's Friday; here's something for a little fun. We've been hearing about "whack a troll" all week. Maybe, the definition will help some who want to play but need help defining who the trolls really are. Have fun and a great weekend!
For the Wikimedia essay, see "What is a troll?".
In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into a desired emotional response[1] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.[2] In addition to the offending poster, the noun “troll” can also refer to the provocative message itself, as in that was an excellent troll you posted. While the term troll and its associated action, trolling, are primarily associated with Internet discourse, media attention in recent years has made such labels highly subjective, with 'trolling' being used to describe many intentionally provocative actions outside of an online context.
Thanks for posting that Dirt. Unfortunately, that definition has a lot of big words that may get lost on some of the more challenged of the posters here on FR.

Interesting thread. Started off civil then the trolls on both sides seemed to take over. People should learn about demographics. They would learn that the majority of Americans are fiscally conservative and socially moderate. That a small majority of Americans when polled consider themselves to be conservative vs liberal. As a thinking man I understand that the fringes of both the right and left are often the ones who scream the loudest. I see this country becoming more fragmented as our basic fundamental concepts of humanity and what this country stands for seems to be under attack (from both sides). I can see why a lot of people are sick of PC, I can see why people are sick of unfettered descriptive demogaugery. (did i speel that correctly LOL ). What I see as the real problem is that we no longer have a loyal minority. Since Bill Clinton's time we have grown further apart on issues no matter who has been the party in power. I do not believe the framers of our constitution ever invisioned a two party political system running this country and I fear that it will only get worse before it gets better.
Notice how MSNBC web news and NBC reporters and writers are not covering the continued spending going on, especially the items tacked onto the Afghanistan war funding!  Why are they only focused on the election of democrats?
I don't know what NBC outlets you watch but the NBC Nightly news and MSNBC ALL DAY babble constantly repeating the Republican refrain that the "Democrats are going to take a beating in November" and why that will happen!
The MSM in general is useless in presenting cogent arguments for both sides. It's always "the Dems are going to lose because the unemployment rate won't be below 9% between now and the election"; "the Presdient spent too much time on HCR"; And more recently, "the Dems are going to lose because the Oil Spill wasn't cleaned up fast enough"
They are sickening!
I wish just one time a journalist (wannabe) from NBC, CNN, FOXNEWS CBSNEWS , ABCNEWS., etc would asked Boehner, McConnell, McCain, what they will do on January 21st 2013 that will make the economy miraculously recover??
Not watching the race in North Carolina. So be it, but this will be a closer race than anyone in the national media is reporting at the moment, and will be the biggest "surprise" should Elaine Marshall win, and for those of us in the state of North Carolina, that is a distinct probability.
I agree. Richard Burr has done a horrible job representing my interests. He's on record as being on the exact opposite side of every issue I care about. He supports the oil companies, voted to cut off UI benefits, he's anti-environment, it just goes on and on. Go Elaine!
Adolf Hitler's major domestic problem was illegal immigrants in Germany and his immediate solution to it was to put all of them in concentration camps with a goal of bringing them to extinction.
Immigration as a global problem being experienced by all countries in the world need to be handled with a lot of care, civility and maturity. America as the leader of the civilized world must always be seen to be above all other countries in the world as to how they handle this global problem at the watch of the entire world or international community.
How a country handles immigration problem is what matters and not the problem itself because all countries in the world including Somalia, Rwanda, Sudan, Burundi just to mention a few experience this same problem of illegal immigration and border control. In Somali, illegal immigrants are killed whenever they are caught or arrested by Somalians. In Uganda, the former dictator Idi Amin gave all of them 48 hours to leave the country and those who failed to beat that deadline were rounded up and killed. In South Africa, they are stoned by mob justice whenever members of public discover them. Saddam Hussein persecuted those he believed were illegal immigrants among other reasons why America went after him.
Illegal immigration was Adolf Hitler biggest problem and his solution to it was to enact very harsh and cruel immigration laws that warranted the Jews illegal immigrants to be put in concentration camps with the objective of bringing them to extinction. It took the wise leadership of America among other right thinking leaders of the world to stop Hitler from continuing to apply his inhuman and cruel anti immigration laws against the Jews immigrants. According to Hitler, he was just doing the right thing by securing his borders and protecting his people against illegal immigrants, majority of whom were the Jews. Thousands of American soldiers lost their lives fighting Hitler and his inhuman laws in Germany.
It is the Federal government's responsibility as the leader of the free and civilized world to ensure that no leader in any country or any part of the world persecutes the people living within his country whether they are citizens, legal or illegal immigrants. America has always exercised this responsibility by leading by example. It will be very difficult for the Federal government to exercise this noble responsibility if the Federal government would allow any of its states such as Arizona to embarrass America by enacting such laws that America has boldly fought against in other countries. United States must not allow itself to use the same methods that are being used in other third world countries including even those that are regarded as failed states to tackle its immigration problems and not even a single state such as Arizona should be allowed to embarrass this great country in the world by coming up with laws that will leave international community wondering whether Arizona is part of the great America they know of or part of Sudan or Somalia where such laws are arbitrarily applied.
Wow, looks like some martians landed here today.
Anyone care to explain why it is inappropriate to reach out to the Muslim world? Care to explain why acknowledging Muslim contributions in science and mathematics is wrong? Anyone, feel free to explain and with something other than all Muslims are bad and hate us or remember 9/11.
Muslims aren't all members of Al Qaeda or other terrorist groups plus we have our own garden variety homegrown terrorists.
Is that the issue? We have a diplomatic corps, national science foundation, and literally hundreds of departments in government where we have been doing just that for decades. Has NASA been the vehicle for making other countries feel good about their contributions to science and math in the past? But even asking the question is "fightin' words" to some.
It gets so tired; When the extremists are all screaming at each other, you can't hear yourself think, let alone hear the voices of reasonable people on all sides of a question, and they do exist.
Everything is a political football, and it's either black or white with no middle ground or gray area open for discussion. So, on the extreme left, this outreach through NASA is viewed as absolutely, positively, without the single shadow of a doubt, the best and only option and anyone who questions it's wisdom is EVIL, a "beckerhead", dittowhatever (I don't really know) an agent of the republican party and generally hates the president and everything that is right and good.
On the extreme right, you have those who see this outreach through NASA as absolutely, positively, without the single shadow of a doubt, the worst and most inappropriate option and anyone who questions it's folly is EVIL, a loony lefty, socialist, an agent of the Caliphate and generally hates the USA and everything that is right and good. It is as though the two extremes occupy parallel universes.
If you say that you feel that outreach is a necessary and good thing, but that the idea of using NASA for that purpose when there are other, better options is a questionable choice, or that the director saying that it was his PRIMARY goal was kind of odd, considering what NASA does, or that we should use whatever means and whatever platforms we have available to reach out to other cultures and that NASA is about uniting ALL nations, like the international space station, there is no room to consider the validity of those statements, so you're shouted down from both sides.
It is impossible to have a discussion if both parties start out with positions cast in stone and believing that any other position is stupid, evil, or most likely both, and that is what you get here much of the time. When there is no room for compromise, there is no room for discussion, only two sides shouting over each other, each believing that they are absolutely right.

I live in Washington state and I feel confident that Patty Murray is going to win.
In the end, It's going to be the economy stupid. The facts are simple. Everyone knows that the dems have rolled the dice with trillions of our childrens dollars, and they did not get the desired outcome. So instead of trying a better stragedy, they will continue to spend money, lie to us about a improving economy, and hope Americans are stupid enough to re-elect them. not me. i will vote old Harry out. and other non-braindead Americans will do the same to other dems. and maybe we can hit a Royal Flush out of socialists
Harry Reid will win in a landslide. There are more prominent republicans in Nevada supporting Reid then Angle. She is so far out of touch only fools will support her.
Reed-Angle, None of the above looks like an excelent choice.
