Kagan: I'm never going to give you up...

Roll Call reports, “Few doubt that Elena Kagan will be the next Supreme Court justice. But that’s not stopping Senate Republicans from continuing their campaign to try to derail her nomination. From now until August, the GOP Conference will launch its latest assault on Kagan, with plans to try to tar her as a Democratic political operative who would bring to the court liberal views on abortion, gun rights, campaign finance and the military. Republicans hope that even if they can’t stop the nomination, they can build enough opposition to force a highly partisan vote.”

Of course the GOP is going to continue their attacks. Just like they use the chicken s*&t anonymous blocks to hold up judicial appointments that then are UNANIMOUSLY approved by the Senate when they ARE allowed to vote up or down.

It is precisely this obsession of the GOP to fight everything and offer NOTHING positive, optimistic, or hopeful that could help advance America that will be their downfall this election cycle. The American people are sick to death of the GOP screaming "NO!" and having NOTHING to offer as an alternative other than the chorus of "hell no!" and "drill baby drill!".

I am eagerly looking forward to this mid-term...

No surprise here. We are a country of mixed liberal, moderate and conservative views. The Supreme Court must reflect the country. If the Court only represented conservative views, there would be no debate on issues which impact everyone--it would base its decisions on that one view. Democracy for all would be jeopardized by a one view rule of law as it pertains to the Constitution. The further right the court leans, the more our freedoms are restricted. You only have to look at the Citizens United case where the Robert's court decided corporations have the same rights as people.

Why can't those conservatives understand this? They still believe in separation of powers, checks and balance, that the Supreme Court is supposed to interpret law, not make law.

The other two branches of government are elected by the people. If the party in power can not get their agenda made into law, what are they supposed to do?

Lady Justice with her scales and blindfold? How is she supposed to "reflect the country" if she can't see whether you are liberal, moderate, or conservative?

The GOP, God love um.  They just can't stand to think of anyone that our President selects as worthy as being competent.  And, God forbid. she's a Jewish woman (shudder).  Plus, she scares them because she's smarter then all the Repugs  together, including smiley face Roberts.

    Tom,

You are so right. It is almost comical "debating" with most of the rabid GOP sympathizers on this board. I feel like I am bringing an Uzi to a knife fight. Facts get them all flustered if Rush and Glen have not covered the topic already and provided a liberal (love the irony of that word here) dose of the talking points to address those nasty facts that the "libbies" like to bandy about and throw into arguments.

Why is it that us Libbies always want to spoil those emotional arguments by throwing things like the truth and facts into the mix? Should we abandon all intellect and just duke it out on faith like the GOP and the Tea Party people seem to insist on from their candidates? Would that level the playing field a bit? lol.

    Disgusted -

You can't "debate with these fools. Their the ones you see running around with their fingers in their ears and yelling blah, blah, blah.

Rush and Glen. Boy what a pair to draw to.

You are right Tom, but they reap what they sow. Let's see what comes home to roost in November. There is a LONG summer and a lot of fall to go before it's election day.

The limpwristed conservative crybabies are going to end up losing their efforts to stop the inevitable Elena Kagan confirmation. The Insolent Minority just wants to pack the corrupt roberts court with more radical subversive activist conservative judges who will tear up the Constitution and turn our Secular Democracy into another third world banana republic. We need Kagan to keep the corrupt robert's court more honest!

Aw, shucks now Bill. If you really want to play in the big leagues with us here, you will need to try a little bit harder than this. We tend to like posts that not only express an opinion, but that ALSO present facts, or at the very least, an explanation as to WHY you believe you are right and why others should adopt your position.

If all you can do is whine about the way SOME people play the game, how you ever going to score? If you cannot score, how you gonna win the game? You see Bill, I back up my statements with facts and my reasoning for how I reached my conclusion. Please see if you can manage to do the same.

Now, go back to the chalkboard and see if you can translate some of the chicken scratches to cogent thoughts and then translate them into English words we can all absorb and consider.

What ever happened to the concept of "pick your battles?" Kagan won't upset the current balance in the court and all the GOP accomplishes by opposing her nomination is another opportunity to demonstrate their negativity. Politically, I'd think they'd be smarter to show some support for this particular issue and save their defiance for another battle.

          Ursula,

I agree with you but I believe you are selling the GOP a bit short here. Not only are they able to demonstrate (once again) their open hostility and negativity towards anything the President attempts or proposes, but they ALSO get the benefit of further alienating females, Jews, and those that see through their tactics and attribute it to what it is. Hate. Pure and simple. Call it whatever flavor du jour is in vogue, it is still all about hate for those that are different or present a challenge to the status quo.

A highly partisan vote over someone who is so clearly qualified to serve on the Supreme Court will do one thing that the Republicans want--keep them raising money from their base. That is what this is really about.

I am BEYOND disgusted with the know-nothing, do-nothing Republican "leaders" in the congress who continue to object to ANYTHING the Dems & the dem prez say. If they were actually FOR anything we might get somewhere, but they're betting so hard on this president's failure -- which, by the way will also be the COUNTRY's failure -- that they don't see how very hypocritical their own position is. It's fine to have basic philosophic differences, but if you don't eventually begin to work with the other side you are a waste of taxpayers' money.

Obama is the most polarizing president in Gallup history. That is a fact. It is also a fact that we have a representative form of government and our elected leaders should reflect the will of the people.

So, are you BEYOND disgusted with the know-nothing American people who helped elect this president (a man that campaigned as a bipartisan centrist) and who now object to the far left radical agenda he has pushed since gaining presidential power?

The majority of Americans were/are against Obama's HCR. Their was BIPARTISAN support against the legislation. The majority of Americans are against his handling of the immigration problem in Arizona. The majority of Americans do not approve of his handling of the Gulf disaster. The majority of Americans are against the spending and incredible deficit increase. The majority of Americans disapprove of his handling of the jobs crisis.

Obama, like most presidents, inherited big problems. He was a senator who should have known about the two wars, the economy, etc. He campaigned on how bad Bush was, that he knew what was wrong and he could do better. The majority of the American people trusted him and elected him. But, irregardless things are not better.

The majority of Americans realize Bush "drove the car into the ditch". The majority of Americans wonder if Obama is not driving the car of the cliff. The Republican leaders, representing many of this majority, are simply saying.....No. We are not "for getting somewhere", if that somewhere is at the bottom off the cliff.

It is discouraging that most commentary is so ugly. Does anyone read what they've said before they post it? Here we have great opportunities to have constructive conversations at sites like this and we use them to sling mud which so often only makes us look ignorant and ridiculous. So sad.........

You are so right. This site has really gone down in quality as the same old same old statements from the same stale individuals comment on the site. It is so apparent when there are relatively few people who even visit this site. It is definately time to look for a much more mature group.

With all the views of “do-nothing Republican” and “do-everything Democrats” it makes for an interesting future. The JFK democrat party was more conservative then the Republican party of today. There one big area to consider, conservatism has limits, liberalism does not seem to have any limits maybe just the law of the jungle. The passing of time has convinced me that the good old days are not recognized until later in life.

                      Baxter,

Good point about JFK. Also remember, the original neocons were democrats.

The founding fathers were liberals. Yet it is today's conservative judges who believe in interpreting the constitution as it was framed by the liberal founding fathers as opposed to viewing the Constitution as a "living instrument" and changing it to accommodate "today's" liberal social agenda.

"Classic" liberalism is today's conservatism. Wierd
