Obama agenda: Emergency declaration for TX

In advance of Hurricane Alex, President Obama issued an emergency declaration for Texas and ordered federal aid to supplement state and local response efforts.

President Obama’s deficit-reduction commission -- chaired by Democrat Erskin Bowles and Republican Alan Simpson -- will hold a hearing today on Capitol Hill at 9:30 am ET. The commission will hear from Congressional Budget Office director Douglas Elmendorf.

The New York Times: “The world’s rich countries are now conducting a dangerous experiment. They are repeating an economic policy out of the 1930s -- starting to cut spending and raise taxes before a recovery is assured -- and hoping today’s situation is different enough to assure a different outcome. In effect, policy makers are betting that the private sector can make up for the withdrawal of stimulus over the next couple of years. If they’re right, they will have made a head start on closing their enormous budget deficits. If they’re wrong, they may set off a vicious new cycle, in which public spending cuts weaken the world economy and beget new private spending cuts."

"On Tuesday, pessimism seemed the better bet. Stocks fell around the world, over worries about economic growth. Longer term, though, it’s still impossible to know which prediction will turn out to be right. You can find good evidence to support either one."

Roll Call: "President Barack Obama on Tuesday showed once again that he is willing to bet against the odds by trying to appeal to Congress to take on climate change and comprehensive immigration reform -- two issues that have otherwise fallen off the calendar for the year."

"First lady Michelle Obama will address the NAACP's yearly meeting next month, the group announced Tuesday," The Hill reports. "Mrs. Obama will trek to Kansas City for a July 12 address to the organization's 101st annual convention."

Oh, great. Now the Republicans will be screaming about how Obama has committed resources to Texas in ADVANCE of a storm and we are spending money we may not need to spend. lol.

Ok, now that the President has issued orders in ADVANCE of a storm, maybe we can actually see how FEMA and the federal government can and SHOULD respond to a major hurricane. I will eagerly await the comparisons between Obama's handling of this storm compared to the last administration.

Good to see Obama's on the ball on this hurricane. Unlike others in his position he is being proactive. Hopefully Gov. Rick Perry will accept federal help in lieu of rejecting it like he did stimulus money for unemployment insurance back in 09.

By the way, some have lauded Perry's reaction and leadership during Hurricanes Katrina and Ike. The real effective politician back then was Bill White, former mayor of Houston. A great supporter of green energy he is also running for governor. The democrats best chance for winning statewide in Texas since before GBE (George Bush era).

This ad has been paid for by Bill White for governor! :)

Because Barack Obama ran (and won) on the premise that he would be the President of the UNITED States of America. Just because Rick Perry is the governor of Texas doesn't mean that the good people of Texas don't deserve some help facing the coming hurricane. (Been there: Katrina, Rita, Gustav and Ike.)

          Cheryl,

Governor Perry has derided the United States of America and has called for Texas to secede from the union and become a stand alone country. Why would America get involved in the affairs of another country? If Perry believes that it is in Texas' best interests to stand alone, SEPARATE AND APART from the USA, so be it. Pull yourselves up by your bootstraps and show us what you Texans are all about!

            Disgusted,

So, punish the entire state, because of the opinion of one man (who I will admit is the governor)? Seems a bit extreme to me, primarily because there are potentially tens of millions of U.S. citizens that may be impacted. Just as a reminder, we get involved in the affairs of other nations pretty much on a daily basis. Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel, G-20, G-8, United Nations, okay, the last three aren't nations, but you get my drift.

Thumbs up for Cheryl. I'm a transplant to Texas from the Midwest. Still haven't gotten the culture here though.

Disgusted I sense you are being sarcastic for humors sake. Even Texas is split about 55/45 along the lines of R vs. D and only the really hard Republicans and Tea Partiers want to secede.

You all do have a point though about Texas. The school boards, city councils et. all are conservative. Texas pride is pushed over US pride in some cases. They indocrinate the young here early. The public schools here actually have the school children say a pledge to the Texas flag. I have no problem doing the US flag pledge but when my son told me about the Texas flag pledge I told him to move your lips.

Eric - From CA it must be nice to bloviate about boot straps. We dems here are taking Texas back. In 08 Dallas county went blue, Tarrant (Fort Worth went blue), Collin (Dallas Suburbs was at 47%). Houston (Harris), Austin and San Antonio are solidly blue. It has and will be a struggle here but with or without a left coast liberal like you, I will make a change.

              Peace.

                  Juven,

Whether you agree with his policies or not, President Obama is the President of the United States, and is deserving of your respect. No doubt you were offended previously when people were disrespectful of President Bush, don't return abuse or scorn, in turn.

Living in L.A, I will give you a typical answer that was given to Bush , the most mildly one, inoffensive at that. He is your President not mine. That's not offensive right? I mean compare to the ones dished out to Bush with venom. I think its a good answer.
