Obama agenda: The G-20 deficit pledge

AP

"Wary of slamming on the stimulus brakes too quickly, but shaken by the European debt crisis, world leaders pledged yesterday to halve government deficits in the most industrialized nations by 2013, with wiggle room to meet the goal," The New York Post writes. "As protester arrests topped 600, leaders of 20 major industrial and developing nations generally backed spending cuts and tax hikes, despite warnings from President Obama about choking off recovery."

The New York Times adds, "Despite President Obama's pitch at the summit meeting for developed nations here for continued stimulus measures to prevent another global economic downturn, the United States will go along with other leaders who are more concerned about rising debt and join in a commitment to cut their governments' deficits in half by 2013, administration officials said on Saturday."

'Most Americans approve of President Obama's decision to oust Gen. Stanley McChrystal as commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll finds, and they support the White House timetable to begin withdrawing from the nation's longest war next year.
In all, 58% back the plan to start pulling out U.S. troops in July 2011 and 38% oppose it."

The Hill notes McCain's appearance on NBC's Meet the Press. McCain said of Obama's Afghanistan troop withdrawal timeline, "It was purely a political decision. Not one based on facts on the ground, not one based on military strategy."

Uh oh... That can't be good. First Read is actually supporting some of Obama's recent decisions. That is sure to rile the right wing to action.

Get ready folks, could be an interesting morning...

President Obama did well at the G20 conference and it is good to see governments around the world pull back on the stimulus packages that have begun to recover the world from the Bushwhacker's Recession. It will be a long tough ride to get our economy restored to normal and to reduce our Bushwhacked deficit ridden economy back to solvency. Can't let off the stimulus too quickly or the economy will tank again, but that's exactly what the dopes of nope want isn't it?

Just more petty partisan politics from Crash Dummy McCain as he just wants endless war to justify more taxpayer welfare for the corrupt military industrial complex. So when are you going to vote for a tax increase to pay for your neverending war Crash Dummy McCain? Yeah never because all these cheapskate rightwing chickenhawks want is endless war without having to pay the price, just roll up the debt and force future generations to pay for it.

I hope Obama can lower the deficit, however I'm a little concerned on how he might do it. I'm afraid that the rich are going to be taxed even higher. While I do tend to support a progressive tax system, repeatedly taxing the rich does no good.

I think entitlement programs need to be addressed. Something is wrong when 50% of Americans owe no tax, and some even profit from our tax system. While I have kids and do enjoy the child exemption, I think that needs to go. Too many people are "baby making professionals" and make their living on spitting out children. I also think the credit on retirement savings needs to be increased. People who aren't saving up for retirement now are more of a burden on us in the future. Therefore those that our saving away for our golden years, should get a higher credit.

Also, what's up with foodstamps? I saw a woman the other day buy lobster with food stamps! Something is wrong when someone who earns a living can't afford lobster, when someone who doesn't earn anything can. Also, I think anyone who doesn't work, but gets welfare and foodstamps should be forced to volunteer 3-4 hours a day at different nonprofit organizations that are in need of volunteers.

While I know this will hardly put a dent in our trillion dollar deficit, I hope Obama will look at the efficiancy of programs (especially the entitlement programs) and not just raise taxes as a cure all.

      Cult,

Have your taxes gone up? Please be specific in your response as I am very interested to know the answer to this since only the top 3% of ALL Americans MIGHT see in increase when the Bush tax cuts expire next year.

If you ARE in the top 3%, you were among the beneficiaries of the largest tax giveaway in the history of the US. Oh, and don't forget this was not accounted for in the budget either. If you are NOT in the top 3%, your taxes have actually DECREASED, so where is this all coming from? Surely you did not just take something you heard on the radio/TV and run with it without doing ANY fact checking or research right?

My taxes did not go up. I am no where near the top 3%.

All I was saying was trying to get across was that in reducing the deficit, I hope Obama looks at the efficiency in spending programs, before we start raising taxes. Not just raise taxes on the rich just because it would be the most popular and have the least political fallout.

Obviously Cult of Personality is doing well and sees no reason to help out the less fortunate among us, why oh why won't those lazy lobster eating unemployed get a job, well it ain't that simple since the well to do have sent all the decent jobs overseas, made sure the border is open so they can hire ileagals for slave wages putting Americans out of work. And the worn out Republican wives tale of the poor rich paying their fare share of taxes don't cut much hay with anyone who understands the tax code.

          #4.4 - Mon Jun 28, 2010 11:01 AM EDT

Senate Democrats couldn't even come up with a 1% cut in the current budget ($35 billion) to fund their unemployment extender bill last week. If they had done that, the bill would have been budget-neutral and they would have removed the Republican"s whole reason for the filibuster

What makes ANYONE believe Obama and Congressional Democrats can come up with cuts that will eliminate 50% of the deficit by 2013?

          HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
