Kerry on McChrystal's 'poor judgment'

Sen. John Kerry, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said on MSNBC’s Daily Rundown Tuesday that Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s critical comments about the White House were “a mistake” and “poor judgment.”

But the Massachusetts Democrat declined to weigh in on whether McChrystal deserves to lose his job over the headline-grabbing quotes he gave to a Rolling Stone reporter.

“I think this is something that has to be decided by the president and his top security team,” Kerry said.

this is not a third world country. the military does not run the show. the commander in chief was elected president and this clown is letting his own political views cloud his judgement and endanger all of those under him. he needs to be releived of his duties. period. this is telling me that even with the extra troops he was wrong and can not get the job done like he sold us. it's amazing how a military man can be so gutless as to not have the ability to confront those to their faces but uses the media. maybe just a typical republican.

President Obama HAD better make sure the door 'does' hit McChrystal in his a@@ on his way out!

President Obama (GOD how I LOVE saying that) needs to send a STRONG message that insubordination will NOT be tolerated!

In any way shape or form!

        Festy,

You know my opinion on that. Demote him and then put him out to pasture. Politics have nothing to do with this. He violated the UCMJ and betrayed his troops with the mouth.

          Feisty,

Just had a memory flash. Was there not a Senate candidate that was called on the carpet by their superiors for doing polical stuff while in uniform?? Same thing here except the superior in this case is our President Obama (I love tyong that also).

You just cannot do this crap and not expect to get handed your cover.

I really support USN Vet--Retired: Demote him! That sends a message to all officers. Then fire him for violating UCMJ. That sends a second message to all officers. Don't violate the court of military justice.

I think it was interesting that McChrystal accused Eikenberry of covering his flanks for the history books - looks to me like it's McChrystal who's doing just that.

Anna Molly makes some sense in the previous thread. Although McChrystal's public comments are unacceptable these types of policing actions and attempts to nation build around the world destroy the careers of many fine military personnel (including generals). Coming from a military background and given the opportunity to head this conflict of providing security and stability for Afgahnistan with 160,000 personnel (many of them in support roles), and given the culture of the people and what history has taught those who felt it was necessary to become involved militarily in this country, I would say hell no, no thanks. I think I'll stick with my job at the Pentagon or head a military base here in the States. Privately, I would bet that any of these Generals who have agreed to take on this duty would have told you that their chances of success were quite slim, especially when no one can really define what success looks like. Generals were meant to win wars, not to police a country, have to worry about collateral damage or to attempt to nation build.

I just read the Rolling Stone article and the pundits are trying to make a mountain out of a molehill. Whatever was said wasn't that bad and it was said by aides and acquaintances, not McChrystal. If Obama fires McChrystal, it will prove how thin-skinned he is and how he constantly tries to control the media and free speech.

KLM – I might agree if this was the first time McChrystal or his staff had made these types of remarks. McChrystal is a very good general but he is also a loose cannon.

                          klm

McChrystal took an oath to not bad mouth the Commander in Chief when he enlisted in the armed services as all military do. He broke that oath. No matter how trivial you might think it is... since you think all things against the President are trivial.... he broke that oath. He should be demoted and sent on his way.

KLM - Sorry, but when dealing with the military it doesn't work that way. While McChrystal and his staff are entitled to their opinions they are not entitled to air their dirty laundry in this manner. It's not about Free Speech. It's about the Chain of Command.

klm, before you spout off, please understand the entire topic (you embarrass yourself and everyone else). you are not entitled to do this in the military. period.

Just so you know, we military members are not entitled to free speech. We fight for it but we don't get it until we are out of the military. We are all subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). When you join you have to sacrifice many of your rights for the honor of protecting them. Not down talking anyone here but I did want to let you know.

Unfortunately, I don't think that McCrystal will see a Court Martial. Do not think for one moment when the second this broke, he had his retirement papers already drawn up for this FUBAR, so atleast he is smart in one regard: He came up with his OWN "Exit Strategy".
