It hasn’t taken long for Democrats to use Rep. Joe Barton’s (R) political blunder to try and solicit donations to the party and keep the heat on Republicans.
In an email to supporters, the DNC asks for money to begin airing a TV ad targeting Barton's remarks. "We're whipping together an ad as fast as possible to make sure voters know exactly whose side Barton and the GOP are on and to demand they stop apologizing to big oil, but we need your help to get it on the air," the email says. "If you're as furious as I am, will you chip in $5 to help us fight back?"
The DNC tells NBC News that the ad will be completely funded through direct donations and that it will run “the first of next week on national cable (CNN and MSNBC).”
Democrats are actively trying to keep Barton’s gaffe a national story as the news cycle slows down heading into the weekend. One GOP aide tells NBC that Barton’s comment and subsequent awkward apologies were, “beyond moronic.” Hence why the weekend can’t come soon enough for Republicans.
*** UPDATE *** NBC has obtained the script of the ad:
VO: BP caused the worst oil spill in American history.
Images or video of spill
VO: Now, at President Obama's direction, BP's set aside 20 billion for recovery on the Gulf coast.
Photo from WH of POTUS w/BP from this week, images of video of spill
VO: But if Republicans were in charge, this is the guy who'd be overseeing BP Blurred/grainy video of Barton
VIDEO BARTON: "...I apologize"
VO: He apologized to BP and called the recovery fund a "tragedy"
VIDEO BARTON: "So I apologize"
VO: Republicans apologizing to BP? Tell Republicans: Stop apologizing to big oil.
VO: The Democratic National Committee is responsible for the content of this advertising.

My check is in the mail.
Air it. The dems need to keep showing Bartons remark. Bama strongarming for yet another slushfund. Do dems do anything but spend other people's money?
Hey, Proud Rebulican.
The slushfund is to help your fellow Americans.
Remember, "COUNTRY FIRST"
While the GOPers had been making it clear here and there that they sided with BP, Barton's apology in yesterday's session was stunning. The issue now is Democrats who want to get it cleaned up and paid for by BP versus Republicans who want to minimize the financial impact on BP. How can the GOP side with a foreign corporation over the American people and America's environment? There's only one explanation and it's out there for all voters to see: The GOP has been bought off. Joe, for all you do, this Bud's for you! Please JOIN US at GOPHypocrisy: http://www.facebook.com/pages/GOPHypocrisy/118526228159115
They do it all the time. If you step off the reservation Boehner will call you to the principles office and threaten you.
I gave my $25!!
It is clear to me that Republicans just want to be against anything the White House is for and against anything the Democrats are for, and only for the sake of being against it, not because of any sane arguement against it. That is PURE IGNORANCE, and UNAMERICAN. You can add me to the check's in the mail list, with more to come. It's time to get vocal about the ignorance and obstrutionism of the GOP. That will be the mantra in the upcoming elections, mark my word, and count my money on it!
Right on.
Thanks Black Bart Jerky Joe Barton for giving us Democrats the perfect campaign pitch to tie you repugnant ones to the corrupt big business, whether it be big dirty oil or dirty coal or corrupt thieving bankers. Better go find the website (not mentioned here at First Read hint hint you missed the most important detail of all gang) so I can ante up to shut up Black Bart. Black Bart's apology will be the apology heard around the world and will be ridiculed for many years to come.
The repugs are not for the American people. They are for themselves, Big Oil, Wall Street, Insurance and the very rich. They are not now or any time in the near future going to help our President which means they are not going to help us. We have gotten a few early Christmas presents this week. I hope we do not wait until December to open them and use them.
The tide is changing and we have to act now and often. Let's put aside the differnces and work together and expose the repugs. The door is open my friends.
Yeah, those big bad oil companies that employ over 500,000 people in the U.S. are taking their jobs to Brazil, Venezuela,..... So when the wind stops and the sun goes down, where's your energy coming from? I second the motion to air it. Oops, forgot, the vitriol and bloviating from the progressives will produce enough hot air to drive your baloon, just like the congress yesterday. Bunch of fools, a relative "Ship of Fools".
Dolores...the wind doesn't stop.
As long as there is a moon and the tides and the rotation of the planet, there will be wind.
And while you may live in daily fear of the sun going down and never coming back...the sun doesn't go down...it's just an illusion caused by the world turning 'round (Betcha never saw the Flaming Lips reference coming!).
But seriously, do you think that fossil fuels such as oil and coal are sustainable sources of energy? There is a finite reserve and it is getting harder and harder to access. Hence drilling on the ocean floor. Whether or not you believe in global warming due to greenhouse gas emissions, you must recognize how much pollution is generated by coal-fire power plants and all of the cars and trucks on the planet.
We are against the corrupt. Oil companies that for the sake of greed cut corners, lie have over 750 violations and kill 40+ people. We are against Insurance companies that take our hard erarned money and when we get sick or have an accident we get dropped. We are against banks that charge huge fees and pay huge bonus for failing and ripping off the public - all in the name of their GOD - MONEY. Mines that cut corners, bribe inspectors and kill over 50 people. Yes, you but your A$$ that we are against that. You can also throw in the 500+ mortgage crooks as well.
Go crawl back under your rock, Rush and Glenn are waiting for you.
FR:
Au contraire. The Democrats have waited WAY too long to start hammering the Republicans with an ad like this. They should have started running ads like this nationally weeks ago, and not just on CNN and MSNBC.
A "gaffe" is sometimes defined as when a politician accidentally tells the truth, and that's what Barton did. He accidentally told the truth about how terribly sorry the GOP was that one of its corporate masters was being abused by Big Bad Barrack Obama, who had the gall to make BP pay for the damage it caused to the livelihoods of people living along the Gulf Coast. The GOP believes that individuals should be accountable for their own mistakes and bad behavior, but not corporations.
