Barton retracts apology to BP

Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX) has apologized -- for the third time today.

This time, he apologized for apologizing to BP. Earlier, during testimony, he apologized "if anything I've said this morning has been misconstrued."

He said, "And if anything I've said this morning has been misconstrued ... I want to apologize for that ... misconstruction."

But now Barton has put out a written statement explicitly apologizing for his original comments this morning and went so far as to "retract my apology to BP."

Here's his statement:

"I apologize for using the term 'shakedown' with regard to yesterday's actions at the White House in my opening statement this morning, and I retract my apology to BP. As I told my colleagues yesterday and said again this morning, BP should bear the full financial responsibility for the accident on their lease in the Gulf of Mexico. BP should fully compensate those families and businesses that have been hurt by this accident. BP and the federal government need to stop the leak, clean up the damage, and take whatever steps necessary to prevent a similar accident in the future. I regret the impact that my statement this morning implied that BP should not pay for the consequences of their decisions and actions in this incident."

Discuss this post

I guess he thought no one would be paying attention to his support of BP this morning. I think his statement during the hearing is what he really believes. This apology is now occurring because his staffers have told him what the voters are saying. Supporting BP right now could be a death sentence to your political career. He is up for re=election this November. Texas has coastline in the Gulf, lets hope those people are not in his district!

    Death Sentence?!?

By him making that apology, NOT ONLY did he WRITE OUT his own death warrant, but the fool also SIGNED IT with the date and time of his execution. LOL.

The man is a idiot, just a other shill for an industry that lines his pocket. He doesn't care about his constituents, just himself. I said it once and I'll say it again, if the Dems had any balls, the idiocy thathe and Bachmann spew, this would ensure the Dems to have even larger majorities than they have now. Trust me, the Republicans wouldn't waste anytime using the stuff.

Whew! I'm getting dizzy... let me see if I get this straight...

Let's see a show of hands from everyone who believes he's truly sorry? Like Joe Wilson was sorry?:0)))

The only thing he's sorry for is that a@@ whipping he got from the likes of Agent Orange etc... for handing the Democrats a early Christmas present!

        Feisty,

You are right on as usual. I do not think he is telling the truth. Maybe he googled his name and saw what amounts to a wanted poster. BP did the same thing when they bought the rights to the search "oil spill". I love pay back in any form.

Tony Baloney is not answering questions. He is in a tough spot (of his own making). If he says Yes - opens the door for BP lawsuits. If he says No - possible purgery charges. I hope when this gets done they also look at other industries like minning etc.

The federal government needs to stop pointing fingers and playing the blame game and focus 100% on fixing the leak. The federal government is not without blame and BP is not without blame. Now work together, quit dithering, AND FIX IT!

I don't beleive these blowhard congress sitters are going to be of ANY use in the fixing of this mess (Dem or GOP).

I think that this hearing is a good thing at a good time.

Seriously what can congress do to fix the situation? Nothing. And the CEO has most likely (though I don't know) given a directive that is being worked right now.

Remember: He's a CEO; not a front liner

Now how do you expect the Government to fix the leak?

The Republicans don't even want to fund education and you expect them to allow the government to purchase the special deep diving submersible robots to use in case there ever was an accident like this.

Republicans ALWAYS say that we should rely on Private Companies to take care of everything, well not a lot of companies go into this kind of business.

These damn politicians. If you say something, STAY with it whether right or wrong. I get so tired of all the apologizing that goes on in Washington.

He said what he felt, now deal with it even though it was jacked up.

He can't be hurt in his district. He wins by 80% consistently.

Not that I know any thing about TX politics, or that I wish ANY harm to the state of Texas. It would just be interseting to see how safe he really is.

ITM, it is people like you that have destroyed this country. Rather than allow for a full discourse and a rigorous debate based on facts and actual information, you would champion an idiot that clearly made a world class bonehead move (like invading a country on trumped up intelligence) to stay the course and continue on down what is clearly the wrong path. You admire a moron that (despite knowing he stepped in excrement) continues walking on the new shag carpet you paid top dollar for. You do not care how much damage is done to you, your interests, or your country as long as you do not have to admit you were wrong?

You people are so pathetic it hurts. You are the reason that Lintball and Glenda get ratings. Nobody else will support your asinine positions or twisted world views so you sit in front of your computers sucking up the pablum they feed you to keep you high on their BS. So sad, so transparent, and so discouraging for the future of this country...

                    Disgusted,

First of all I'm not the one with the moniker "DISGUSTED". I am very happy with the life I have provided for my family and I.

Second, you don't know sh!t about me. I can be as articulate or as ghetto as you like.

Third, I am the reason azzholes such as yourself can sit on a puter in peace and not worry about getting castrated for speaking ill of your country. Yes I have 22yrs and aches and wounds to show for it. When your mother was changing your diapers, I was humping the bush.

So your saying GOD is a moron?

What interest of mine was damaged by what some congressman said? I'm retired, own my own biz, kids are successful, wife is successful and can sit here and expose clowns like you.

You are pathetic and your the reason Maddow and Olbermann has that big audience of 3.

If you don't like the country, GTF out. Bye,,,,,you will not be missed.

he apologized "if anything I've said this morning has been misconstrued." Yeah, right.  He means he apologizes if his blind and mindless love for BP and party over country served to deflect from his expression and real meaning...hate for any and all things Obama no matter what the issue or subject.  Buy this guy the ticket to leave the country.  Perhaps somewhere where the government will get off peoples backs...like Somalia, or Afganistan!

Hasn't anyone understood this yet. This isn't just a love for Conservative ideology it isn't for a love for BP. Statements like these from Republicans stem from a total hate of anything Obama. The Republicans have made this personal no matter what rhetoric they use to cover up their total disdain for our President it boils down to they dislike that Barry Obama and his family are the white house. I truly believe that some of it is either racism or borderline racist. Yes I do believe that there are some blacks that are racist against blacks. Yes that happens so when guys say I'm black my answer is so what doesnt mean you cant be a biggot. Sorry didnt mean to go off on that tangient.

The GOP will never cooperate with President Obama, because the quartet of Rush-Glenn-Sarah-Michelle would not like it, and that "doing what is right for the country" would get them voted out of office by the MOB. Instead of realizing that in no other country/nation in the universe could a non majority male do what happened in 2008 in the USA and rejoicing that america sometimes can deliver on a promise, some people would rather "sink the ship" than bail water. President Obama forced BP to put money on the table, and to have no control of the process. If you do not think this is important, remember the Exxon Valdez. Some individuals still have not received money, and others have died. No court in any jurisdiction, in this country would have forced BP to put 20 billion in escrow, and what ever amount was received would have lawyer fees of 25-40%. Participation in the 20 billion dollar fund does not waive your right to sue BP. Given the environment President Obama inherited upon taking the oath of of office, the president has done a remarkable job without GOP support.

When Tony Hayward went to the White House I am sure he brought BP's attorney. The Prez brought OUR attorney. The #1 attorney for the People of the USA happens to be The Attorney General of the USA! I looks like our Attorney was better than theirs.

Rep. Joe Barton is an embarrassment to the U.S. voters and Government. He is also an example of the rest of our Representatives in Congress and the Senate. He is the number one recipient of money from oil.He was just stupid enough to state out loud what the Republicans and some Democrats really believe. He does not understand restitution.Because wealthy people are not held accountable in this country as a rule. When they are it is so rare that it makes the news.Rich and powerful people and corporations and governments act above the law.So when they have to act or talk about restitution and repaying a debt or facing justice they have to mouth words they really have no emotional connection to or understanding of.Joe Barton is a dangerous fool and there are alot more just like him in congress and in the Senate. And the 20 billion dollars escrow account is really a scam anyway. It is not really 20 billion, and BP is allowed to make payments of 1.5 billion every few years.BP is allowed to challenge all claims which will bankrupt out of work victims. The real thing BP does not want America talking about is seizing their assets. If the government did that like they do drug cartels and tax evaders then the people who need the restitution would actually get it when they need it.Now.Seize BP's assets now!Exxon is still fighting claims in court! And we know alot of judges own land that leases to oil drilling companies.Nice racket, huh?
