Keyword "Barton" on Facebook and up pops an ad (on the right) that says, "Stop Apologizing to BP!" with Rep. Joe Barton's face on it.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is responsible for it, becoming the latest Democratic political arm to try and capitalize on the Texas congressman's comments this morning.
The committee is not disclosing the buy at this point. But they say the Facebook ads are projected to get 20 million ad views today. The committee has also set up a Web site to try and raise money off the comments.
“The DCCC will hold these out-of-touch House Republicans accountable who have no shame when it comes to jumping to the defense of BP and Big Oil,” said Ryan Rudominer, spokesman for the committee.
The DCCC also says it is also "sending out targeted press releases to House Republicans and Republican candidates on the topic."
Barton's seat is not competitive this fall. He was first elected in 1984 and has won with more than 60% in every election for more than 20 years, since 1988. But Democrats appear intent on getting all Republicans on the record on this.

OMG: That didn't take very long. Several Gulf Coast Republicans are also angry with Barton. Wonder if someone will send him an oil coated pelican?
I like that Ron, instead of an albatross around the Republican's necks, it is oil coated pelicans!
Who cares about the Pelicans?
We should be more concerned with saving the rare and elusive Gulf Coast Walrus!!!
It is amazing Ron how so many republicans as of late keep shooting themselves and their party in the foot.
Word is some folks asked several oil-coated pelicans if any wish to volunteer to be sent to Barton's office. Only one raised his wing. Said the oil was causing him some stomach problems and that he needed a place to take a big sh**. He couldn't think of a better place to do this than Barton's desk.
Da Noid:
I really don't think anyone is much interested in saving Rush Limbaugh. I know, I know. I will get out a letter immediately to all walruses apologizing to them for the comparison.
Sorry I'm late... lol... had to go sign up on FB first! What a rat b@stard Barton is!
OMG! CA - I can't think of anything more fitting! LOL
All,
I think they learned a lesson from BP when the copped the term oil spill from I think it was Google. Pay back is a bitch.
Picture a bunch of angry pelicans gathering on the bookshelves, lamps, chairs--while Barton works at his desk unknowing--like in the movie The Birds.
Guess we are going to have to scour the stores to find pelicans to coat in oil so they can be mailed off to his office. I hope that a majority of the real ones can be saved. :)
We could always substitute with those pink plastic flamingo's....
I've several ads I've created since the beginning of this fiasco: http://nitpickins.com/?page_id=112
Lot of Creatives express this way, our motives are not nefarious. Mine eases my imputant anger over a situation I have absolutely no control over. My family was in Alabama and Louisana long before the first European landed on these shores. I recognize the futility ahead of all my family members in the effected areas. We are hopeless against the continual onslaught by our fellow citizens, the Republican Party.
The GOP apologized for us being in the way of BP's oil spill. Once again, we are shown what the Republican Party truly feels about us. Not just this one man, several have said the same thing. Texas Rep. Joe Barton, Rep. Michael Burgess, R-Texas, GOP leadership, Rep. Tom Price of Georgia, chairman of the Republican Study Committee, former Texas Rep. Dick Armey, Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, are just a few.
We have the right to be chattel, enslaved by desperate need, and heavy relentless economic deprivation. We do not have the right to expect nor demand remediation. Congressional committee allowed that apology to stand. He still retains his position. He still has security which is a damned sight more than most attempting to survive on the Gulf of Mexico coastline.
I create to escape the reality of life in these United States of America, assailed from all sides, floundering and hopeless against the might of the Republican partisan obstructionary Congress members and it's condemnation of attempts to restore my relation on the Gulf Coast.
As a British friend of mine might say: Joe Barton. What an arse!
Wow, it's almost scarey how fast this happened. I remember Tim Kaine saying the democrats were not going to allow republicans comments and actions to go unchallenged.
Late yesterday afternoon, there was a Pensacola republican city councilman being interviewed. He was yelling (all for show no doubt, first time on national TV) that he wants that hole plugged RIGHT NOW and the BP or the president better do it RIGHT NOW, today, now. In all fairness to BP, did this man not think that BP would have plugged that hole already IF it could have; they're in the business to make money and not fixing it is costing them billions. That said, most of the other people being interviewed have been frustrated but had a realistic understanding of the situation.
Jody -
Does the "so fast it's scary" remind you of anything? Like say, maybe the speed with which the Obama campaign was so good at responding in similar fashion during the elections?
Part of me says it's about time. Part of me says no, it's better to wait until you're handled a golden opportunity like this. But another part of me says there are still no winners in any of this, and the oil is still leaking no matter who says what to who.
Count me in with the "frustrated but realistic".
He has shamed America!!!
The Mexicans coming across the Arizona borders to live in this great country are more patriotic than this scumbag.
I wish he would give up his citizenship for one that really deserves it.
Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
Barton is as sensitive about Gulf Coast citizens feelings as the two British Clowns.
Have no fear American politics will never make sense.
FIX THE DAM FLOW PROBLEM NOT THE BEACH PROBLEM.
The Repugs cover all the bases
Didn't Bush/Cheney meet with BP and other Oil Execs behind closed doors and give them MORE than what Obama just got back?????
Ditto!!!!!
The one thing Barton did get right was that this is a slush fund for Obama. Instead of this, those people that have been injured by BP's ignorance can use the courts to get the money from BP. I know, I know, forcing the courts to do it's job is not all that easy. Still, we are a nation of laws.
