Rick Barber -- a Tea Party Republican competing in a congressional run-off down in Alabama -- is airing the first TV ad this reporter can remember that advocates taking up arms against the United States.
Seriously.
In the ad (below), Barber has a discussion with men dressed up as America's founding fathers. "I would impeach him," Barber says at the beginning, obviously a reference to impeaching President Obama.
Barber continues, "Today we have an Internal Revenue Service that enforces what they call a 'progressive' income tax... Now this same IRS is going to force us to buy health insurance, cram it down our throats or else. Now I took an oath to defend that [the U.S. Constitution] with my life, and I can't stand by while these evils are perpetrated. You, gentleman, revolted over a tea tax! A tea tax! Now look at us. Are you with me?"
One of the men dressed like a U.S. founding father -- George Washington? -- replies, "Gather your armies." And to drive home the point, there are clear images of pistols in the ad.
Barber is running in a July 13 run-off against Martha Roby for the right to take on incumbent Alabama Rep. Bobby Bright (D) in the fall. Roby got 48.6% of the vote in the June 1 primary, and is the favorite in this contest.

Carmelizeda, The guns are just a prop....Right.
The message: Shoot commie pinko bleeding socialists and all their union thugs.
Save the world for Wall-Street and country-club republicans... they are the true patriots.
The world will be better if we continue to chain 12 year old Asian girls to sewing machines for 16 hours a day @ 23 cents an hour....While Alice Walton buys another $78 million dollar Rembrandt and we continue to pay her employee healthcare. Who are the real socialists thugs?
Thanks Garrison, definetly enjoyed your sarcasm.
The Boston Tea Party was a protest against taxation without representation. Taxes are lower under Obama than they've been in the past since the 1950s, and Obama won a democratic election fair and square, so it's not taxes or representation the teabaggers are whining about. What they're really protesting is that a black guy they don't like beat their pasty white preferred candidate, Bomb Bomb McCain and his fellow "maverick" Sarah Death Panel.
BTW: Not widely reported in the corporate media is the fact that the teabaggers want to repeal the 17th Amendment to the Constitution, which took away the power to elect U.S. senators from state legislatures and gave it to the People, through direct elections. Teabaggers may want more representation for themselves, but they want less representation for everyone who doesn't agree with them.
great post.... so true, lol
This is the very reason why i dont care for either party...they take the lives of the people and play politics with them and to all the tea party people where was all this outrage when bush was spending us into the stone age...i didnt hear we want our country back then....why because its ok as long as your party is in power......... hypocrites!!!!
If this was anybody else they would be called a traitor and be brought up on charges.....but people are afraid to do it because of the political concequenses.....same thing with the oil in the gulf some of you wont be happy until the president swims down himself and plugs the hole...lets just blame him for everything and not come up with our own answers and bring it to the table......Want to know why blacks dont vote republican?....Because you continually show yourselves hostile towards them...yes we know our history we know most blacks voted republican when they got the right to vote....but maybe you should look in the mirror and ask why not anymore...start with the running on racist platforms in the 60's the jim crow times and keep going from there to now ...(I.E. the tea party)
That was the first thing I thought when I saw the ad, this is treason. What about the gun in the first of the ad, what does that imply? God Ihope it is not as it appears.
I'm really curious at what point this sort of language becomes a criminal matter?
Obvious display of guns, language about preparing his army. Advocating the overthrow of a legitimately elected government through force of violence. But the Obama haters just keep saying its all metaphor, don't take it seriously.
I can't help but think what would happen to anyone who aired such an ad under George W. Bush's regime.
drive-by-observer
Typical dumb-ass. It has been said, over and over, that the IRS will NOT be hauling you off to jail, or fining you, for NOT taking the insurance. But, they STILL toss it out there like it's fact. And people DO take it serrious. How do you fight that kind of ignorance??
********************************************************************************
Kind of reminds me of those typical dumbasses who call the AZ law the "papers please" law. It's been said over and over again thet police (many of whom are Hispanic) will NOT be "profiling" Hispanics are walking up to families in the ice cream shop and hauling them off to jail. People who think these things are either lying, fear mongering, or are stupid? How do you fight that kind of ignorance?"
germany let a man promise change and if we dont do somethig quick we may get the same change.
Fear monger
If President Obama does away with free elections, you may have a point. Otherwise, pointless fear mongering, as Obama was elected through a free democratic process, and is subject to term limits.
It takes courage and intelligence to live in a free country. Hope you find some.
This is an example of the caliber of people the GOP is recruiting to run for public office. This man seems to have an agenda that is purely self-serving, but who cares, the GOP will do anything to get power back. It is like the oil leak in the Gulf, they will throw anything in it to stop if from leaking, so it is with the GOP, no plan just throw anybody in the pool, to keep the Democrats from winning. What happens when these people get in, are they going to work for the people, are they going to get attention for their agenda? I believed they threw Alvin Greene in the game in SC. Time will tell what is their real agenda. At least they are providing the media with lots of drama to entertain us. It seems anti-American, but in this day and age, what is right is seen as wrong, and wrong is seen as right.
Believe me, nobody is afraid of the Teabaggers. They're a f*cking joke. As far as this ad goes, where were you guys defending the Constitution when W. Bush violated it over 750 times? This guy is a traitor, he's advocating armed insurrection, and he should be shot (it's wartime).
Why does the GOP have such a hard time with the words Domestic Terrorist? Maybe because too many of them are domestic terrorists?
For a time, the inconsistency of thought the Tea Party and their lackeys perpetrate was really troubling to me. They answer no questions. They do not address the issue(s). They simply go on the offensive with attacks of socialist, Marxist, Communist, & Bleeding Heart Liberal. There is no consistency of thought; no political philosophy; and, no common sense. Rick Barber in the above media clip is a perfect example. He points to the Constitution, tells us how he loves it, and then proceeds to argue that he is going to lead armies to bring it down. Barber forgets that the PEOPLE have chosen their elected representatives over the years to create the government (political and adminstrative) we have now. He conveniently forgets that the people ELECTED President Obama and Congress. Our elected representatives did not take over this nation by armed force, and then, set up a tyrannical government that Barber argues is the enemy of the people. The government of the United States of America is our elected government to protect us "from ENEMIES FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC. (Do those words sound familiar to those of you who have read the constitution? They should! The Constitution requires all members of government, in all three branches, to swear an oath to protect the Constitution and people from enemies foreign and domestic. Now, think about Barber's bottom line "Go raise your armies" to fight the enemy. And, who is the enemy??!!?? It's the government and the people of the United States of America. That's Barber's enemy by his own admission! The man is telling his followers to get their guns because they are going to whip the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard---not to mention the National Guard in each of the fifty states! Mother of God! Does anyone in the Republican Party screen their candidates anymore??!!??
Finally, please note the responses to this post. They will not present an opposing argument against mine. They will simply parrot the same old phrases---Communist, Socialist, Maoist, Marxist, Liberal. That will be it, except of course, the usual death threats!
Damn Commie-Liberal! Just kidding. Great post and you pretty much nail it. Consider their arguments related to religion and abortion as well . . . as long as you agree with their view, you're a patriot, otherwise you're an enemy.
I'm kind of looking for some kind of violent act happening soon. This immature rhetoric is the kind of thing that fuels it.
"We don't like what happens when we vote and lose, so now we want to change it"
Ignorant thugs. Obama was right about "hiding behind God and guns"
Cowards, all of them.
Cowards who don't have the balls to live democracy. They don't have what it takes to be free men.
In the movie "Matrix" there is a well known tag-line; "Ignorance is bliss!". Unfortunately for this country, I think the amount of ignorance has reached critical mass and if someone doesn't come up with a plan to defuse it - it will blow up! Then we'll all be truly in a blissful state - the state of death that is!
My views don't reflect any political party's or movement's views, I'm simply a domesticated foreigner with a citizenship that tells me I have the right to vote and serve on jury duty. I reluctantly took the citizenship after more than 5 years pass the time I qualified for it. Why didn't I jump at the opportunity to be a citizen as soon as I was able to apply? Because my faith in the american way of life and the direction towards which this country was and still is going is seriously shaken. It's shaken by its inability to mature into a more modern society worthy of its true European origins and worthy of its ancestral dreams to become free.
Too many things in every day life are fed to us without deeper understanding of the realities that surround us, abroad and domestically, on part of the not so well educated populace that consumes it. Everything we hear in the news, read in newspapers and watch on television is watered down, becomes self-serving, keep-them-amused bunch of half true's or lies produced by only two governing political parties. It becomes real old in a hurry. So much that it is almost like going to church on Sunday where you already know what the priest will say because it's always the same and always the doctrine of the church, but never the voice of reason. Those among us who are blessed with the knowledge of being able to speak a foreign language and read from foreign news sources can attest to the biases and ignorance that prevails in american politics.
How could a modern democracy, which this country thinks it is, only have a two party system? Maybe those who, like myself, take the Oath of Allegiance should be presented with a paper that boldly states on top; "Now you have the right to fight for your freedom and form a political party!". Don't you think that doing a jury duty is such a "turn-off" for so many?!
Using the images of the Founding Fathers...true patriots...to incite violent insurrection against the United States of America is absolutely sickening. Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Franklin...they fought against taxation without representation. In fact, Wiegel shares in the Washington Post that George Washington levied the first federal tax, which was on whiskey, in spite of the fact that he was the distillery owner in Barber's ad. In fact, Washington ordered armed militias to ready themselves to enforce this tax.
The majority of the right would state "They don't represent me!!".....LOL.....even the idea of "Tea Party" is joke when one views the historical facts.
Considering all of the views expressed here, let's remember that regardless of how strongly we may disagree, because we live in America we have the right to disagree!! I am fascinated by the views expressed here and by the general tone -- which is far from disagreeable! As long as we stick to fighting with words and leave the guns at home, this country is going to continue to be a great place to live!
You know what... EVEN IF YOU TAKE YOUR GOV BACK! (caps for drama) I can't wait till 1 year in and reality kicks in.
In some twisted way, I would love to see the extreme right get control. At least you would all trade your delusions for facts.
God save this country should the ignorant allow the corporations to take control.
Anyone notice that the 'Obama should be impeached' bunch posting comments here largely have atrocious grammar?
You know what??? WHO FLIPPIN CARES!!!!!
Boo hoo, rich people should have to carry more tax burden, I'm a teacher and I'm sick and tired of being taxed too much for the amount of hard work I do and being penalized for being single. If I become a welfare hag, I can collect big bucks for pumping out kids, and if I rip people off via shady business and "consulting", I can hide my money and have a tax shelter. What a great deal!!!
This Tea Bagger idiot is just as much of an idiot as Obama - they both have their heads shoved so far up their political agendas they don't know what side is up.
If you were paid more, would you still hate Obama?
http://www.cbpp.org/cms/index.cfm?fa=view&id=3151
too much taxes eh?
You enjoying the next 3 months off too?
Sure she is. She's whining because the money she's paid WITH our TAX dollars is not more WHILE she is on summer vacation. What's even scarier is she's a teacher, yet she believes that she could collect "BIG BUCKS" if she'd just go on welfare. I dare ya Jen, quit your job and go on welfare and live the high life. Get back to us from the yacht while in the Bahama's that your welfare checks afforded you ok. And SHE IS A TEACHER! Any wonders why the population is dumber and dumber every year?
I think that any ad that advocates sedition should be roundly rejected by all true Americans. I feel no need to respond to whether President Obama is an effective president or who was the worst president or any other discussion about the current president. The fact remains - he is our president. He deserves our respect for the job he is trying to do and if we cannot give him our full throated support, then we will have to wait our turn until the next election and choose someone else. That is the American Way. The country has survived two years without our freedoms being encroached....you still have freedom of speech apparently.....and freedom to bear arms....so what exactly are you rebelling against?
You do not like the current administration. Ok. That is your right. However, you do not have the right to advocate its overthrow except by election or if you can find grounds - impeachment. I haven't heard any legitimate grounds for even considering impeachment, so I have to say.... elect your representatives....if you can...and gather the electorate to propose an alternative to the current administration in the next election. The mandate for health care does not start for a couple years after the next presidential election so you have time to repeal that provision. But in the meantime.....cut us all a break and knock it off with the crazy talk. You make it difficult to listen to what may be some legitimate concerns.
A nutjob who appeals only to other nutjobs.
Did you know that your tax burden is at a 50-year low? Thank you Mr. President! Could you imagine all these treasonous, uneducated, nasty people threatening their God, Ronnie Reagan when their tax burden was higher? Ronnie also raised taxes and you never heard a peep.
Do I believe we have to get spending under control and figure out what we want to do about our future? Yes, absolutely. I read all the facts, talk to people who are on both sides of an issue, and make an informed judgment. Judgment -- something that is seriously lacking in the political discourse today. It's interesting when a recent poll was conducted with Tea Baggers --- only 2% knew that for 95% of Americans, their taxes had actually gone down under the current Administration, and there again, were actually at a 50-year low. 80% of the tea baggers also said they liked Social Security, Medicare, the Prescription Plan (a Bush plan) and the Military (current Military resources and past military resources - veterans benefits make up a staggering 54% of the federal budget alone), which well, my dears, makes up about 85% of the federal budget. The other 15% is for general government and physical resources (government workers, interest on debt, Justice Dept., State Dept., Homeland Security, Environmental Protection, Army Corp of Engineers, etc.). When asked about getting rid of specific programs or departments, tea baggers were stymied, as apparently a majority of them seem to enjoy driving on roads, having electricity, running water, sending their kids to public schools, knowing that someone is checking out if their food and products are safe, disease prevention, and I could go on and on.
I think it is a pretty clear fact that George W. Bush will go down in history as the worst President ever, and I think his steering of our country (and the world) toward a financial abyss at the end of his tenure cements that into fact. I couldn't stand the man and the wars without end he got us into, the crisis in the Gulf we now face, the poor state of our infrastructure, the increase of poverty and unemployment (I could go on and on and on), are all because of his disastrous, uneducated, Conservative views. But I never once used the treasonous words that routinely come out of tea baggers and Conservatives, and especially the nasty words about lynching or killing President Obama. I might have despised President Bush, but he was the President and I was never disrespectful.
Seeing the rise of the haters in this country, one can only see sadness for our country in the future.
Oh my GOD.....you did research in government spending? WHAT?!?! I thought all you had to do was bitch and moan and your point was correct....LOL
Heres another source that supports you....

Glad to see others thinking
Further proof the GOP has been taken over by far right extremists. Will any of the party leaders condemn this nut? What causes this lunacy? The FBI , hopefully, has him in their sights. These anti-American traitors should be flushed out and incarcerated before people get killed.
couldn't agree more. Nothing wrong with disagreeing, but it HAS gone too far.
I believe the tea tax that England put on the colonies back then was arbitrary and without representation of the people being taxed. All the things this candidate speaks badly of was voted and passed by the representatives of the people therefore it is not the same. It seems to me what we have here are sore losers and most likely racist. This candidate is from Alabama. I think Alabama most likely gets 300% of federal dollars back to the state for every dollar paid in federal tax. What a joke.
does not work, you're right about Alabama taking in more federal money than they pay out. Alabama receives $1.61 back for every dollar they pay. Massachusetts by comparison receives $.79. In fact red states as a whole receives more than they pay. They're basically welfare states. Personally, I'm sick of supporting them. Let them go their own way. We'd all be better off.
You know- this kind of commercial is not protected under free speech. Just like flag burning is not. Its eaven written in the constitution to be classified as treason. There is no reason to impeach the current president and frankly the current government is still effective at allowing most of us to live in relative comfort and security.
The government can crack down on abusive corporations, such as non- union mines, or corner cutting oil companies. It can regulate trade from countries that may offer cheap labor but horrible human rights abuse. The government can crack down on radical militia or special interest groups that become dangerous and i mean physically dangerous to themselves and the public- not politically. I'm talking about groups like the Adventists of Waco, E.L.F(earth liberation force), Gangs, and Drug cartels. It costs money to deal with them and keep them at bay. There is a reason for taxes and regulations. We want safety, security, and public services and benefits- we have to pay for that. We have to give up some things in order to gain things we want.
In the end it still represents the American people. If we are not happy with it then we better re-evaluate ourselves, what we want and what we need. What we value. We also must work to keep informed about domestic and foreign issues that affect our day to day lives so we can make educated decisions in the voter booth. To many of us rely heavily on emotions- if we like the candidates personality- if we can drink a beer or sip a latte with them, but that does not guarantee good leadership.
If you dont vote- if you evade taxes, if you do not serve in the military or other institutions that serves your country, you have no right to complain.
Mark says "The Tea Party is not out for just Democrats, but those who are not looking out for the American people." I'm just curious in his parallel universe who benefits from health care if not the American people ?
itstoolate, lets hope people come to their senses! I agree with you. Stuff like this is just put on for show. I don't agree with everything Obama has done, but I don't hate him! Hate will NEVER win. I'll bet most of the right wingnuts here call themselves religious,,,how is that possible? God and Jesus DO NOT HATE.
I thought the tea/baggers were just stupid angry old white guys until they opened their mouths and confirmed it.
