U.S. soldier charged with three Afghan murders

A 22-year old Army specialist has been charged with three counts of premeditated murder in the deaths of three Afghan civilians.

Army officials say Spc Jeremy Morlock of Wasilla, Alaska (yes, that Wasilla), of the Army's 5th Stryker Brigade out of Fort Lewis, Washington was allegedly part of a "rogue unit" that killed three innocent Afghans in three seperate incidents in Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan earlier this year. According to the officials in at least one case soldiers in that unit allegedly planted an AK-47 next to the victim to make it appear he was an armed insurgent.

Charges are possible against others in the unit for allegedly participating in the killings or helping to cover them up.

US military officials are concerned that the killings will provide the Taliban with "invaluable and damaging propoganda" against the US military just as it prepares to launch a major offensive operation in and around Kandahar city in an effort to end Taliban and criminal influcence and win the "hearts and minds" of Afghans.

What's up with the water in Wasilla? Causing the residents up there to be so viscous?

Without naming names of course ;0)

I'm damn sure no Palin fan but this has nothing to do with her what so ever. I'm more unhappy to hear that these soldiers are single handedly undermining the work of their own fallen comrads and reversing any social progress that the various countries, including ours, have made in the war.

Just another Wasilla Jesus Freak who takes his orders from the Wicked Witch of Alaska instead of President Obama. No doubt we'll find out this jerk was an evenagelical christian lunatic fringer who thinks he's some kind of christian crusader who's mission is to kill any and all Muslims instead of just the bad ones in al-Qaeda and the Taliban. This is why War Criminals Bush and Cheney wrecked our secular armed forces with their concept of turning them into christian crusaders. Sounds like this Warlock Morlock is a surefire candidate for working for Blackwater, our private chrisitian crusader army of grossly overpaid private mercenaries.

This little Wasilla jerk just made our task that much harder trying to subdue al-Qaeda and the Taliban as his disgusting act of murder will only cause more moderate Muslims to be recruited by al-Qaeda and the Taliban and turned radical.

Quick someone stick a camera in Murtha's face and see what he has to say.

OMG...this is truly sad; I don't want to run the risk of being presumptuous but words mean something-- all of the hate spewing from the right seems to have spilled over into our military. These young men are from Wasilla Alaska? This is truly very sad.

I think it was only one of them.

M.Fisher -- You are correct -- only one was from Wasilla. But I don't think the truth matters to some. A fractured soundbite is all some need in order to confirm their world view; frightened to death at the thought of challenging where their fundamental beliefs came from in the first place. You see, some are defined by the example they live. Others are defined simply by their beliefs; for these individuals, challenging deeply held beliefs becomes an exercise in challenging ones self-identity -- not an exercise for the weak minded -- certainly not a productive exercise for one that cannot identify where their beliefs came from in the first place. For one defined by the example they live, challenging beliefs is an imperative; this individual knows that any belief worth holding onto can stand up to a challenge -- if it can't, it is not a worthy belief. For this individual, the soundbite is never enough.

OMG...this is truly sad.  The murder rate is UP in Chicago, Illinois(yes, that Chicago), through May of this year.   The foolishness spewing from the left seems to have spilled over to the Windy City.  Those murderous men are from Chicago, Illinois?  This is truly sad.

What's even worse is that Chicago's crime rate hasn't made the NATIONAL news. (snark)

Indeed Chicago's crime rate has made national news. Try a Google on "chacago crime rate" and see for yourself. I know this is difficult to accept, but there is more to the news than the American liberal's past time of bashing Palin. And, sadly... Through the end of April there were more murders in Chicago then US soldiers killed in Afghanistan. In spite of a national education system that has apparently done an impressive inculcation jop, I bet it is actually as difficult for one to connect Obama to Chicago's crime rate as it is to connect Palin to this US soldier in Afghanistan. But feel free to make an impression if you can -- the inculcated author of this subject article tried. If you have as much trouble communicating as the author did, remember that you can always blame Bush!

What does Obama as President have too do with the MURDER RATE in Chicago? You act as though it's something NEW. I can tell you about a time when it was worse. Especially if you were black. So don't stand on that soap box with me. Chicago has always had a high crime rate and the fact that President Obama hails from there doesn't mean that he should be responsible for the crime rate. Chicago has a Mayor, police chief, city council and governor. Get real-- Palin and you wingers preach hate an violence-- you don't even want to regard the Muslims as equals in human stature let alone religion--so get it straight before you step to me with your twaddle.

On the subject of BUSH...we are in TWO wars that he started aren't we? So I can indeed BLAME BUSH since you wanna be smart about it.

Nope, I preach peace. And that is one large mouthful of hate you just dished out. Thank you for making my point; Obama has NOTHING to do with the crime rate in Chicage and Palin has NOTHING to do with a murderous soldier "losing it" in Afghanistan. I regard all life as precious. Twaddling on about Palin somehow being connected to this sad alleged murderer is the very definition of "twaddling". There is a place for solemnity and a place for politics -- the loss of civilian life in Afghanistan calls for a dose of solemnity and a break from the foul stench of Palin bashing.

If I recall "CORRECTLY" you drew first BLOOD. Did you not? If you can't take it then don't dish it out! It's rather childish that you attacked my comment with the attitude that you did. The article is there plain as day-- so why attack comments when we're commenting on an article? It's just childish and that why we're out here for anyway-- to COMMENT on articles.

I don't care for Palin-- I'll give you that. But she along with the Rush and the rest of her ilk has caused a lot of hateful things to happen. I want to see that Shyster and her common brood exposed for what they are-- NOTHINGS.

It happens when 22 year olds are put into a situation where there is a broad war on terror, no defined enemy, no uniforms, no good way to distinguish the enemy from civilians, house to house confrontations, deployment times that never seem to end, and the list could go on. The same things happened in Viet Nam, and Korea, in wars of occupation this happens.

Look no one knows what happened out there when those soldiers had to make the decisions they made. It may have been an accident. They are just charged with murder at this time, they are US citizens and assumed innocent until proved guilty. These soldiers will have their day in court and we should hold judgements until such a time as all the evidence has been presented. Just because one of the guys happens to be from Wasilla means nothing are we going to politicise everything that happens. Ron Yankee was so absurb as to mention the murders in chicago and relate them to what? I assume he was being sarcastic. Just as sensless is it to associate this story with Gov Palin. Some articles are just news and not politics. There are so many infractions committed by military men and women its just that person has problems. At Ft Bragg a soldier killed his brother and wife after returning from Afganistan but it had nothing to do with politics. My point is that lets just chill on trying to attribute things like this to Political climates but just that person/Spc's own disfunction.

Thank you for getting my point! There is NO connection to the murder rate in Chicago and NO connection to Palin. I agree, these are only allegations at this juncture. We have seen allegations made against US soldiers that resulted in full acquittals. However, the early information for this particular soldier looks damning indeed. The court of public opinion is not held to the same standards as the US judicial system and I fear the court of public opinion will be brutal in this case and they might just be justifiably right in the end.
